What does “second-oldest” mean in Favre-Leuba’s history?
Favre-Leuba is often presented as the world’s second-oldest watch company, but the available sources do not independently establish that global ranking. The dates themselves refer to two different milestones: the Favre family’s early watchmaking and the later partnership that created the Favre-Leuba name.

That distinction matters when using the brand’s age as a business lesson: a family’s watchmaking record is not the same thing as the founding date of the Favre-Leuba partnership.
What did Favre-Leuba achieve before the quartz-era disruption?
Its history includes meaningful technical development. Europa Star identifies the in-house FL101 calibre in 1955, the Bivouac in 1962, and the Bathy in 1968. Favre Leuba’s own timeline describes the latter instruments as pioneering; “world’s first” descriptions should be understood as brand or publication claims, not as independently settled rankings. These products show that the company had demonstrated technical capability. They do not, by themselves, explain its later difficulties or show that past innovation could guarantee success in a different market.
How did the company respond to electronic watches?
As electronic watches rose from the 1970s onward, Favre-Leuba experimented with quartz while continuing to offer mechanical watches. The documented response therefore involved maintaining a range of product approaches. The available evidence does not establish that this strategy was sufficient to preserve the company’s former scale, nor does it isolate one decision as the cause of the later decline.
What do the production figures show—and what don’t they show?
Europa Star reports two archival figures: a 1964 account of a new Geneva workshop described annual capacity of about 300,000 pieces, while a 1994 archive item reported 20,000 pieces thirty years later. The figures signal a steep contraction in reported scale, but they are not a verified, like-for-like audited production series: one is described as capacity, while the later figure is reported as pieces. Europa Star connects the decline to the family eventually relinquishing the business. Favre Leuba’s official timeline says the family was compelled to sell the brand in the 1980s, after which ownership changed hands repeatedly. Europa Star names successive groups including Saphir, Benedom, Jacques-Bénédict Time Force Group, LVMH, Valfamily, and Tata, but its feature does not provide a complete, dated legal ownership chain. Titan Company’s 2019 investor presentation says Titan acquired Favre Leuba in 2012; the reviewed sources do not establish the current ultimate owner after later restructuring and revival. The evidence supports a story of shrinking reported scale and a sale, not a claim that Favre-Leuba went bankrupt.

What does the 2024 relaunch tell us?
At Geneva Watch Days in August 2024, Favre-Leuba relaunched with 22 references across the Chief, Deep Raider, and Sea Sky collections. The brand stated a launch-era price range of CHF 2,250–4,375 and an ambition to reach several thousand pieces annually within three years. That production figure was a target, not a reported result. CEO Patrik Hoffmann framed the effort as a transformation, saying the team was “determined to restore this legendary brand to its rightful place in the global watchmaking landscape.” That is the company’s stated ambition, not independent evidence that the goal has been reached. Is Favre-Leuba’s recovery established?
Favre Leuba’s official 2026 materials report a Watches and Wonders debut, active collections, and servicing support. These are evidence that the brand is operating and investing in its public presence. What business lessons can readers take from the case?
- Heritage is an asset, not a shield. A record stretching back to the Favre family’s 1737 activity did not prevent severe disruption when watch technology and the market changed.
- Technical strength does not guarantee commercial resilience. The FL101, Bivouac, and Bathy document product capability, but they cannot stand in for evidence about later demand, scale, or financial health.
- Adapting products is only one part of adapting a business. Favre-Leuba tried quartz while retaining mechanical offerings. The historical account documents that response alongside declining scale, but does not show that product choices alone explain the outcome.
- Separate stated ambitions from results. A relaunch, exhibitions, collections, and a production target demonstrate activity and intent. Sales, profitability, and sustained production would be needed to judge a lasting recovery.
For personal-finance readers, the useful parallel is modest: when evaluating a business—or a company investment—brand recognition and a compelling comeback story are not substitutes for evidence of durable cash generation and operating performance. Favre-Leuba is a bounded historical case, not a universal formula for surviving a crisis.
