Did Elon Musk say his father had a share in an emerald mine?
Yes. The archived transcript of Clash’s 2014 Forbes interview records Musk saying his father “also had a share in an Emerald mine in Zambia.” The transcript is preserved by Elon Musk Archive; the original Forbes page was not recovered in the sources reviewed.
The wording matters. Musk described his father as having “a share,” not as owning an entire mine. The sentence does not specify the legal form of the interest, its duration, the mine’s identity, or the value of any proceeds. “Bragged” may describe the tone readers hear in the remark, but the quote alone cannot settle those underlying questions.
Was the mine in Zambia or South Africa?
The 2014 remark says Zambia. It should not be recast as a statement that the family owned an apartheid-era South African mine. Zambia is also the location in later accounts of alleged emerald dealings; the sources reviewed do not establish that Errol Musk owned an entire mine there.

The reviewed sources do not provide public ownership records that resolve the dispute. The 2014 quote and later statements are evidence of what the speakers said, not a substitute for documentation of title or the terms of a transaction.

Does Walter Isaacson’s biography describe a different arrangement?
Yes. Forbes Australia’s 2023 summary of Walter Isaacson’s biography describes Errol exchanging a plane for a portion of emerald output from three small mines owned by a Zambian businessman. That account concerns a claim to emerald production, not necessarily ownership of the mines themselves. It may help explain how accounts of a “share” could differ, but the summary does not resolve legal ownership through public records. Forbes Australia

- A biography account summarized by Forbes Australia describes an exchange for emerald output from mines owned by another person, which is different from owning the mines outright.
