Data Center growth is a central business driver, but the share price also depends on whether that growth can continue, how much profit and cash it produces, the risks to those forecasts, and the price investors already pay for them.
What drives NVIDIA’s stock price?
The share price changes as investors revise their expectations for NVIDIA’s future performance. Revenue growth can support a higher valuation when investors believe it will persist and translate into durable earnings and cash flow. The same results can disappoint if they fall short of expectations already reflected in the price.
Data Center demand and deployment
Data Center is the clearest operating driver in NVIDIA’s latest reported results. For the quarter ended July 26, 2026, the company reported $96.2 billion in total revenue, up 106% year over year. Data Center contributed $89.0 billion, up 117%, making it the largest part of quarterly revenue. The figures are company-reported results, not a forecast of future growth.
Demand depends on customers’ investment in AI infrastructure and on deployments turning into shipments and recognized sales. CEO Jensen Huang described the opportunity in the Q2 FY2027 earnings release this way: “AI has reached its inflection point. It’s doing useful work. Its tokens are productive and profitable. Now, compute is revenue.” That is management’s characterization of the market, not independent proof that demand will keep accelerating.

Margins, earnings, and cash generation
Revenue growth matters to valuation only insofar as it can support profits and cash generation. NVIDIA reported a 75.0% GAAP gross margin and diluted earnings per share of $2.46 GAAP and $2.22 non-GAAP for Q2 FY2027. These are different accounting measures; compare GAAP with GAAP and non-GAAP with non-GAAP rather than treating them as interchangeable.
Investors watch whether margins and earnings can hold up as product mix, production costs, supply conditions, and competition change. NVIDIA said its non-GAAP treatment changed beginning in FY2027 to include stock-based compensation, so comparisons across periods should account for that change.
Product execution, supply, and competition
Investors also assess whether NVIDIA can deliver products on schedule that remain useful and competitive on performance and efficiency. The company relies on third parties to manufacture, assemble, package, and test products. Disruptions or capacity limits can constrain shipments; changes in demand can also create inventory exposure.

Competition may come from rival suppliers or from customers developing their own chips. If alternatives gain traction, NVIDIA could face pressure on demand, market share, or pricing. The company’s filings identify product acceptance, technological change, competition, and possible product defects among factors that can cause actual results to differ from expectations.

Policy can affect which products NVIDIA may sell and where. In its Q2 FY2027 filing, the company said restrictions had effectively foreclosed it from China’s data-center compute market as of the quarter’s end. Export rules can change, so that statement describes the situation reported for that period, not a guarantee of future policy or market access.
More broadly, NVIDIA identifies regulatory issues and reliance on third-party manufacturing and packaging among risks to results. Its earnings release cautions that forward-looking statements are not guarantees of future performance and speak only as of the date made.

Why does NVIDIA stock go up or down?
A company’s reported growth is only one part of the market’s response. Investors compare results and outlook with what they expected beforehand. Consequently, strong growth can coincide with a falling share price if investors had expected even stronger results, weaker margins, or a more favorable outlook. Conversely, results that beat expectations can support a price increase even if the business still faces risks.
Market interest rates and broad changes in risk appetite can also affect the valuation investors are willing to pay for future earnings. A change in the stock price does not, by itself, show whether the company’s long-term prospects have improved or worsened; it may reflect revised forecasts, a changed valuation multiple, or both.
How should you assess NVIDIA’s valuation?
No single ratio establishes whether a stock is fairly valued. Each valuation method depends on assumptions about future results, and the comparison is meaningful only when its date, accounting basis, and share count are consistent.

Trailing versus forward earnings
A trailing price-to-earnings ratio compares the share price with earnings already reported. A forward P/E uses forecast earnings instead, so its result depends on whose forecast is used and what period it covers. A forward multiple can look lower because projected earnings are higher; that does not make the projection certain.
GAAP versus adjusted earnings
Check whether a quoted P/E uses GAAP or adjusted earnings. Adjusted figures exclude or treat some expenses differently and are not directly comparable with GAAP results. With NVIDIA’s change to non-GAAP treatment beginning in FY2027, the definition used matters especially when comparing periods or forecasts.
Earnings multiples versus cash-flow measures
Price-to-earnings ratios focus on accounting earnings. Cash-flow measures instead examine cash generated after relevant operating and investment needs. They can provide a different view of the business, but they also rely on estimates and consistent definitions. Compare methods using the same share-price date and a consistent share count.

Test the assumptions behind the multiple
A high multiple alone does not prove that a stock is overvalued. It means the implied assumptions deserve scrutiny. Consider whether the forecast depends on continued rapid demand growth, sustained margins, timely product execution, available production capacity, or limited competitive pressure. A change in any of those assumptions can alter the earnings or cash flow used to justify a valuation.

The company’s reported financial results are not enough to answer that question. A defensible valuation judgment needs a dated share price and explicit assumptions for future revenue, margins, reinvestment, cash flow, and dilution. It should also identify the forecast source—such as management guidance, analyst consensus, or an individual scenario—and whether earnings are GAAP or adjusted.
The figures here establish substantial recent growth and profitability, but they do not establish a current fair value. Without a contemporaneous quote and a specified forecast, there is no sound basis for calling the stock cheap or expensive.
Quick Recap
What to monitor in future results
- Data Center: Revenue growth and whether customer deployments continue to translate into sales.
- Profitability: GAAP gross margin and GAAP diluted EPS, with adjusted figures considered separately.
- Execution and supply: Product timing, production capacity, and the company’s reliance on manufacturing and packaging partners.
- Competitive position: Rival products and customer-developed alternatives that could affect demand or pricing.
- Policy exposure: Changes to export restrictions and the markets NVIDIA can serve.
- Capital allocation: Dividends, actual repurchases, and outstanding share trends. NVIDIA announced an additional $150 billion share-repurchase authorization in October 2026; an authorization is not the same as completed purchases, and the price paid for repurchased shares matters.
