In the quarter ended June 30, 2026 (FY2026 first quarter), revenue rose 7.5% year over year to ¥329.130 billion and adjusted operating income rose 55.7% to ¥34.439 billion. The sharp profit increase reflected parts-and-service growth, pricing, cost reductions and a weaker yen, partly offset by logistics costs. Cash generation was more complicated: operating cash flow was ¥17.316 billion and free cash flow was ¥15.728 billion, with receivables collections and a property sale materially affecting the quarter.
What HCM sells and how it makes money
HCM reports two operating businesses. Construction Machinery covers excavators, wheel loaders, rigid dump trucks and other equipment sold into construction, infrastructure and mining. Specialized Parts & Service covers aftermarket components and support, primarily through Bradken and H-E Parts International. Bradken focuses on aftermarket parts and services for mining facilities and machinery, while H-E Parts provides service solutions.

The model has two different revenue timings. A machine sale produces a large, relatively discrete transaction when a customer commits capital. Parts, repairs, components, technical support and other services can generate revenue repeatedly as the installed fleet is used. That second stream can make sales less synchronized with new-equipment deliveries, but it is not automatically more profitable in every period. In FY2026 Q1, Specialized Parts & Service revenue increased while its adjusted operating income declined.

Net income was ¥30.301 billion in the operating-cash-flow bridge. Consolidated net income also benefited from other income associated with a fixed-asset sale, so it should not be treated as a pure measure of recurring operating performance.

These segment amounts do not add directly to consolidated totals because they are reported before intersegment adjustments. The parts-and-service result illustrates why investors must examine profit as well as sales. Management cited customer investment restraint and more intense competition as factors behind the decline in segment profit despite higher revenue.
Construction Machinery: the volume engine
Equipment demand responds to construction activity, public infrastructure spending, mine development and regional economic conditions. HCM said hydraulic-excavator demand was solid in North America and Europe during the quarter. Mining-related demand was firm in Latin America and other regions, although the outlook differed by commodity and machine type.
Specialized Parts & Service: the installed-fleet engine
Aftermarket demand follows machine utilization, maintenance schedules, wear rates and mine operating conditions. It can continue when customers postpone a new-machine purchase, but customers may also defer discretionary investment or push harder on prices. The Q1 combination of 12.6% revenue growth and a 20.5% profit decline shows that utilization-linked revenue does not eliminate competition, cost inflation or customer spending restraint.

Exchange rates affect both reported sales and earnings because overseas results are translated into yen. The weaker yen supported Q1 revenue and income, and management raised its full-year outlook partly because exchange rates remained weaker against the yen than originally assumed. Translation gains can lift reported figures without representing additional machines sold, while local-currency costs and hedging can change the net benefit.
Mining is both a demand driver and a source of volatility
Mining equipment and mining-related parts depend on mine investment, commodity prices and the trade-off between buying new machines and extending the life of an existing fleet. HCM’s LANDCROS 2028 plan, which runs through FY2028, emphasizes North America, Latin America, mining, and parts and service.
In the Q1 outlook, demand for hard-rock minerals was described as firm. Coal and iron-ore pricing was softer, and overall new-mining-machine demand was expected to be lower than in the prior year. That combination can favor aftermarket work over original-equipment deliveries, but it can also pressure customers’ budgets and pricing negotiations.

Why operating income can rise faster than revenue
Q1 revenue grew 7.5%, while adjusted operating income grew 55.7%, producing a 10.5% adjusted operating margin. This is operating leverage, not a guarantee that the same rate will persist through a cycle. Several mechanisms can produce it:

- Volume and factory utilization: more production spreads depreciation and other factory overhead across more units.
- Mix: the proportions of equipment, mining trucks, parts, services, rental, used equipment and software affect average profitability.
- Cost reduction: purchasing, manufacturing and structural changes can lower unit costs.
- Currency: a weaker yen can increase the yen value of overseas sales and profit.
- One-time or strategic costs: brand-transition, research, development and investment spending can depress a period’s margin.
HCM’s FY2026 full-year forecast calls for ¥1,470.0 billion of revenue and ¥150.0 billion of adjusted operating income, implying a forecast margin of approximately 10.2%. That is management’s forecast as of July 30, 2026, not a reported result.
Fixed-cost absorption is a key sensitivity
In its FY2025 chief financial officer discussion, HCM described a marginal profit ratio of around 40%, a fixed-cost ratio of around 29%, and an FY2024 adjusted operating margin of 10.6%. Management said production capacity had been increased in anticipation of broader excavator demand, but actual production fell short of initial expectations, making fixed costs harder to absorb. It discussed constraining depreciation and shifting labor cost toward a more variable structure. Those were FY2025 observations and aims, not verified FY2026 achieved ratios.

The ¥48.171 billion reduction in receivables and contract assets helped cash flow, while the ¥25.032 billion inventory increase used cash. This is why a single quarter’s operating cash flow should be read alongside working-capital movements rather than compared with net income alone.

Free cash flow is a definition, not a quality score
For this Q1 statement, HCM defines free cash flow as operating cash flow plus investing cash flow: ¥17.316 billion plus ¥(1.588) billion equals ¥15.728 billion. The result was helped by a real-estate or other fixed-asset sale. Asset disposals can be sensible capital allocation, but they are not a repeatable substitute for cash generated by selling machines and services. Investors should separate recurring operating cash, working-capital releases, capital spending and disposal proceeds.

HCM’s FY2025 report described a basic policy that assigns roughly one-third of generated cash to each of three areas: maintaining and enhancing existing businesses, strategic growth investment, and financial-structure improvement plus shareholder returns. The current Q1 release does not restate that policy, so it should be treated as historical management context rather than confirmed unchanged guidance.
The same FY2025 report identified operating-cash-flow margin and the cash conversion cycle as management KPIs. A practical monitoring checklist is:
- Whether receivables are rising faster than sales.
- Whether inventory is building because of planned growth or weak sell-through.
- Capital expenditure compared with depreciation and stated capacity plans.
- Recurring operating cash flow excluding asset-sale proceeds.
- Parts-and-service profitability, not just its revenue growth.
- Currency assumptions used in guidance and the effect of actual exchange rates.
The FY2025 value-chain share figures—43% for FY2024 and a 48% FY2025 outlook—are historical or then-current management-plan measures, not FY2026 actuals.

FY2026 outlook and principal risks
As of the July 30, 2026 filing, HCM forecast FY2026 revenue of ¥1,470.0 billion, adjusted operating income of ¥150.0 billion, operating income of ¥150.0 billion, and net income attributable to owners of the parent of ¥84.0 billion. Management expected construction machinery and mining markets to remain generally firm, with solid demand in the Americas, India and Oceania, while taking a more cautious view of other regions.
The forecast incorporates weaker-yen assumptions and newly reflected pressure from Middle East logistics and material costs associated with higher global crude-oil prices. The Q1 filing also described deterioration in market conditions, logistics disruption particularly in the Middle East, and rising transportation costs. Actual results can differ materially if demand, commodity prices, tariffs, freight, labor, raw materials or exchange rates change.
FY2026 Q1 was the latest available quarter at the reporting point covered here. HCM scheduled its Q2 results for October 29, 2026; figures and guidance should be refreshed after that release.

- Start with volume and geography: identify whether growth came from machines, mining, parts and service, pricing or currency translation.
- Reconcile segment profit: compare Construction Machinery with Specialized Parts & Service instead of relying only on consolidated margin.
- Test operating leverage: check production volume, utilization, fixed-cost absorption and cost reductions.
- Separate recurring from unusual items: distinguish operating profit and recurring cash from asset-sale gains or other income.
- Read the cash-flow bridge: track receivables, inventory, taxes, capital expenditure and disposal proceeds.
- Compare guidance with actual assumptions: especially currency, logistics, commodity prices and regional demand.
