Re:

SIF vs Mutual Funds vs PMS: Which Investment Structure Fits Your Needs?

A practical India-focused comparison of mutual funds, SIFs and PMS, including SIF eligibility, permitted derivative exposure, liquidity terms, costs and a step-by-step diligence checklist.

There is no universally superior structure. A conventional mutual fund is usually the simplest route to a defined, pooled strategy. A Specialized Investment Fund (SIF) may suit an eligible investor who understands a more specific mandate, potentially broader permitted exposures and strategy-dependent liquidity. Portfolio Management Services (PMS) can be appropriate when a separately managed mandate and account arrangement are worth the additional due diligence. Choose the structure only after comparing the actual mandate, benchmark, costs, liquidity, eligibility rules and your ability to absorb losses.

What the three structures are designed to do

The labels describe different ways investment decisions, ownership arrangements and investor access are organized. The label alone does not tell you expected returns, risk or tax outcome.

Conventional mutual funds

A mutual fund pools investors’ money into a scheme with a stated investment objective and mandate. The scheme documents identify the assets it may buy, its benchmark, risk disclosures, charges and redemption terms. Your first task is therefore to read the particular scheme’s documents rather than assume that all funds in a category behave alike.

For many investors, this is the most straightforward structure because the product is already packaged around a common mandate. That convenience does not remove the need to check concentration, liquidity, benchmark choice, costs and the scheme’s risk-o-meter.

Specialized Investment Funds (SIFs)

SEBI introduced the SIF framework within its mutual-fund regulations. It permits specified equity-oriented, debt-oriented and hybrid strategies, with rules that can allow limited unhedged short exposure through eligible exchange-traded derivatives. An SIF is therefore a regulated framework for defined strategies, not a promise of superior performance and not a guarantee of daily dealing.

The SIF framework took effect on April 1, 2025. The strategy’s Information Document and offer terms must set out the objective, permitted exposures, benchmark, risks and subscription and redemption arrangements. You must evaluate the individual strategy, not infer its characteristics from the word “SIF.”

Portfolio Management Services (PMS)

PMS is a provider-managed portfolio arrangement governed by a mandate for the client. The practical questions are different from those for a pooled scheme: whose name the holdings are in, how the account and custody arrangements work, what discretion the provider has, how fees are calculated, and how and when assets can be sold. Eligibility, fees and liquidity terms must be confirmed against current SEBI rules and the provider’s documents; a current PMS minimum threshold has not been established here, so no numeric comparison should be assumed.

SIF eligibility: how the ₹10 lakh rule works

SEBI’s general SIF entry rule is ₹10 lakh in aggregate across an investor’s SIF strategies at the PAN level. It is not a separate ₹10 lakh minimum for every strategy. For example, an investor allocating ₹6 lakh to one SIF strategy and ₹4 lakh to another would meet the aggregate amount, assuming both subscriptions are accepted and all other conditions are met.

The rule includes two important qualifications:

  • Accredited-investor exception: the circular exempts accredited investors from this threshold.
  • Regular mutual funds at the same AMC: those investments do not count toward the SIF-only ₹10 lakh threshold.

Ask the fund house how it will monitor the PAN-level total before placing an order. Keep records of all SIF holdings and subscriptions across strategies so that a transaction is not rejected or delayed because your own tally differs from the administrator’s records.

The threshold is an access condition, not a risk rating. Investing ₹10 lakh does not make a strategy conservative, and investing more does not make it safer. Set aside only money that can remain invested for the stated period and withstand a substantial loss.

What SIF strategies may hold—and what the 25% figure does and does not mean

The framework covers specified equity-oriented, debt-oriented and hybrid strategies. Each strategy’s information document must define its objective and permitted exposures. Read those limits to learn whether the strategy can concentrate in particular securities, use derivatives, take sector or duration positions, or hold cash and equivalents.

SEBI’s 2025 circular permits unhedged exposure of up to 25% of net assets through eligible exchange-traded derivatives for purposes other than hedging and portfolio rebalancing, subject to the circular’s conditions. This is an exposure limit, not a forecast of returns and not permission to take unlimited short positions. A strategy may use less than the maximum, and the manager’s actual use can change over time.

When reviewing a strategy, distinguish among:

  • Hedging: derivatives used to reduce an existing exposure.
  • Portfolio rebalancing: derivatives used to adjust exposures while implementing the mandate.
  • Unhedged exposure: derivative exposure that is not for those two purposes and is subject to the 25% net-asset ceiling under the circular.

Look for plain-language examples in the risk disclosures. If you cannot explain how a derivative position could affect a bad month, the strategy is not yet understandable enough to buy.

Liquidity: never assume an SIF is daily

SEBI allows SIF subscription and redemption frequency to reflect the investment strategy and requires the offer document to disclose the terms. Consequently, one SIF may offer more frequent dealing than another, while a strategy holding less-liquid assets may require a notice period or have specific dealing windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before investing, record these details in writing:

  • How often subscriptions and redemptions are accepted.
  • The cut-off time and valuation date for an order.
  • Any advance notice requirement.
  • Whether a gate, suspension, postponement or other restriction can apply in stressed markets.
  • How long payment normally takes after a valid redemption.
  • Any exit load, adjustment or other redemption charge.

For a mutual fund, obtain the same information from the scheme documents. For PMS, ask the provider how quickly securities can be sold, whether an asset may be difficult to liquidate, and whether the mandate contains a minimum holding period or notice procedure. A portfolio that is theoretically sellable is not necessarily cash available for tomorrow’s bill.

How to compare risk instead of comparing labels

“Mutual fund,” “SIF” and “PMS” are not risk grades. Compare the source of risk in the actual portfolio.

Mandate and concentration

Read the permitted range for equities, bonds, cash, derivatives and other instruments. Identify limits on issuer, sector, maturity, credit quality and position size. A narrowly focused mutual fund can be more volatile than a broadly diversified SIF; a PMS can be conservative or concentrated depending on its mandate.

Benchmark and measurement period

Use the stated benchmark to judge whether the manager is taking risk that the investor is being paid to accept. Check whether the benchmark matches the portfolio’s asset mix and whether performance is shown after expenses. Do not compare a debt strategy with an equity index merely because both publish a percentage return.

Drawdown and loss capacity

Ask what loss you could tolerate without selling at the worst time. Consider emergency reserves, near-term expenses, debt obligations and income stability before committing to a strategy with derivative exposure, concentration or restricted liquidity.

Operational and provider risk

Review who calculates the net asset value, who holds assets, how statements are delivered, how complaints are handled and what happens if the provider changes managers. In PMS, the account and custody arrangement deserves particular attention because it affects how you see and verify the underlying holdings.

Costs: compare the full drag, not one headline number

Every structure should be assessed using the complete, current disclosure. For a mutual fund, inspect the scheme’s expenses and any transaction or redemption-related charges. For an SIF, read the strategy-level expense disclosure plus any subscription, redemption, distribution or performance-linked charge described in the offer terms. For PMS, request a written schedule that explains fixed management fees, performance-related fees, taxes and transaction or custody costs, if applicable.

Ask each provider to show an example of what an investor would pay over one year at a stated portfolio value. Check whether a performance fee has a high-water mark, hurdle, crystallization date or loss-recovery provision. If the document does not explain the calculation clearly, treat that lack of clarity as a diligence problem rather than trying to estimate the fee yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer that a higher fee buys better performance. The available evidence establishes no performance statistic for these structures and does not support an assertion that one is likely to outperform another.

A practical decision framework

Choose a conventional mutual fund when simplicity is the priority

A conventional mutual fund may be the better fit when you want a clearly documented pooled mandate, standard investor reporting and no need for the additional SIF threshold or a bespoke PMS arrangement. You still need to select the scheme based on objective, benchmark, costs, risk and redemption terms.

Consider an SIF only when you understand the strategy and meet the rules

An SIF may merit consideration when you want a defined strategy that uses the SIF framework’s permitted equity, debt, hybrid or derivative exposures, and you can commit at least the applicable aggregate amount. The decision is appropriate only if you understand the possible loss, the dealing frequency and any notice period. The ₹10 lakh rule should never be treated as evidence that the product is suitable.

Investigate PMS when the mandate and account arrangement add real value

PMS deserves consideration when you need a provider-managed mandate with an account and holdings arrangement that you can evaluate directly, and when the provider’s customization, reporting and service justify the added complexity and fees. Confirm current eligibility and every fee before signing. If you cannot explain the provider’s discretion, liquidity process or total annual cost, do not proceed.

Step-by-step diligence before investing in an SIF

  1. Obtain the current Information Document and offer terms. Use the document for the exact strategy, not a general presentation for the fund house.
  2. Write down the objective and permitted exposures. Note equity, debt, hybrid and derivative permissions, concentration limits and any exclusions.
  3. Check the benchmark and risk disclosures. Read the risk-o-meter and identify the circumstances that could produce a large loss.
  4. Verify your eligibility. Calculate all SIF investments across strategies at your PAN level. Apply the accredited-investor exception only if you meet the applicable accreditation requirements. Exclude regular mutual-fund holdings from this SIF-only calculation, as the circular directs.
  5. Map the dealing terms to your cash needs. Record subscription and redemption frequency, cut-offs, notice periods, settlement timing and charges.
  6. Calculate the all-in cost. Include recurring expenses and every investor-level charge disclosed in the offer terms.
  7. Review ongoing disclosures. Use portfolio disclosures, annual reports, monthly fact sheets and risk-o-meter information available through AMFI’s SIF Investor Corner.
  8. Run a stress test in plain language. Ask what happens if equities fall sharply, rates move against the portfolio, a derivative position loses money or redemptions are delayed.
  9. Keep a decision record. Save the documents, your threshold calculation, the reason the strategy fits your time horizon and the conditions that would make you reassess it.

Step-by-step diligence for a mutual fund

  1. Read the scheme information and identify its precise objective, asset allocation range and benchmark.
  2. Check the risk-o-meter, concentration limits, portfolio disclosures and the manager’s stated process.
  3. Confirm purchase, switch and redemption rules, including cut-off times, exit loads and settlement timing.
  4. Compare the disclosed expenses with other schemes serving the same objective; do not compare unlike asset classes.
  5. Check whether the scheme’s liquidity and volatility fit the date you may need the money.
  6. Review periodic factsheets and reports after investing so that a mandate change or persistent deviation from the benchmark does not go unnoticed.

Step-by-step diligence for PMS

  1. Request the current mandate. It should state the objective, permitted assets, discretion, concentration rules and benchmark or reference, if one is used.
  2. Clarify the account and custody arrangement. Ask whose name the holdings are in, who executes trades, where statements come from and how you can verify positions.
  3. Obtain the complete fee schedule. Require worked examples for management, performance-related, transaction, custody and other charges where applicable.
  4. Confirm liquidity. Ask about selling time, minimum holding periods, notice requirements and assets that could be difficult to exit.
  5. Verify current eligibility and regulatory status. Use current SEBI rules and provider documents; do not rely on an old article or an unverified minimum-investment figure.
  6. Test reporting quality. Make sure statements show holdings, transactions, fees and performance over a period that lets you reconcile the account.
  7. Ask about continuity. Find out what happens if the named portfolio manager leaves, the mandate changes or the provider’s operating arrangements are revised.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • “The ₹10 lakh threshold means SIFs are safer.” It only describes general access; it says nothing about loss potential.
  • “All SIFs are daily-liquidity products.” Dealing frequency is strategy-specific. Read the offer terms.
  • “The 25% derivative figure is a return target.” It is a regulatory ceiling on a specified type of unhedged exposure, subject to conditions.
  • “A PMS minimum can be copied from an old comparison.” Current eligibility and fees require current primary documents.
  • “A benchmark proves skill.” A benchmark is a comparison reference; assess whether it matches the mandate and whether results are shown after costs.
  • “Tax treatment is identical across the three.” No categorical tax comparison is established here. Tax can depend on the product, transactions, holding period and current Indian rules; obtain current professional advice before acting.
  • “One provider’s brochure is enough.” Cross-check the legal offer document, periodic disclosures, account statements and fee schedule.

Official documents and information to check

The primary SIF framework is SEBI’s Regulatory framework for Specialized Investment Funds (‘SIF’), dated February 27, 2025, effective April 1, 2025. SEBI published a clarification notice on April 9, 2025, and SIF application and investment-strategy information-document formats on April 11, 2025. Use the current version of the relevant document when investing, since terms can be updated.

AMFI’s SIF Investor Corner, checked October 13, 2026, provides investor-facing portfolio disclosures, annual reports, monthly fact sheets and risk-o-meter information. Those materials help you monitor an investment, but they do not replace the strategy’s offer document or your own suitability assessment.

Making the final choice

Start with the money’s purpose and the date you may need it. Then eliminate any structure whose liquidity, loss capacity or eligibility rules do not fit. Among the remaining options, select the actual mandate with the clearest exposures, benchmark, costs and reporting—not the label with the most impressive marketing language.

If two options appear similar, prefer the one whose documents let you answer five questions without guesswork: What can it own? How much can it lose in a bad scenario? When can I get my money? What will I pay? How will I know whether it is doing what it promised?
