What Drives Earnings Growth in Asia’s Technology Sector in 2026?

AI infrastructure is lifting demand across Asia’s technology supply chain. Here is how capacity, product mix, pricing, cloud investment and regional differences convert that demand into earnings—and where the risks lie.

Asia’s technology earnings are being lifted primarily by spending on AI computing infrastructure. Orders for advanced logic chips, high-bandwidth memory, packaging, servers, networking, components and power equipment are moving through the supply chain. Revenue growth becomes profit growth only when a company has the capacity, product mix, pricing power and cost control to capture that demand; cloud services, AI applications and a recovery in non-AI electronics add other, more uneven, channels.

The earnings engine: AI infrastructure spending

Cloud providers and enterprises are committing capital to the computing capacity needed to train and run AI models. That investment creates a chain of commercial orders rather than a single “AI sector.” Semiconductor designers and foundries supply advanced logic; memory makers provide DRAM, high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and NAND; assembly, testing and advanced-packaging companies connect those dies; original-design and electronics manufacturers build servers and racks; networking, electronic-component and power-equipment suppliers complete the data-center system.

The strongest near-term beneficiaries are businesses sitting at constrained or technically difficult parts of that chain. When customers need more capacity than suppliers can immediately provide, high-value products and favorable pricing can raise profit faster than unit volumes alone would suggest. Companies with less specialized capacity may still see sales increase, but their margins depend more heavily on utilization, input costs and competitive pricing.

J.P. Morgan Private Bank’s 2026 Asia Outlook forecasts 12–13% earnings growth for Asia ex-Japan in 2026 and 10–11% in 2027. Those are forecasts for a defined regional index, not reported results for every Asian technology company. The same outlook says companies with meaningful AI exposure represent about 30% of its Asia ex-Japan index, showing both the opportunity and the concentration of the theme.

How demand turns into earnings

A useful way to analyze the sector is to follow four links. A break at any link can leave a company with impressive sales but disappointing profits or cash flow.

1. Investment creates orders

Data-center capital expenditure, smartphone and PC production, industrial automation and other end markets determine the number and type of components customers order. AI infrastructure is currently the largest incremental source of semiconductor and server demand in the cited outlooks. Consumer electronics remain cyclical: a replacement upturn can help manufacturers, while weak household demand can offset part of the AI impulse.

2. Capacity and mix determine what ships

Leading-edge wafer capacity, advanced packaging and HBM production cannot be expanded instantly. A supplier that can deliver scarce, high-performance products may grow shipments and average selling prices at the same time. A supplier exposed to older nodes or commoditized products may experience volume growth without the same pricing benefit. Product mix also matters within one company; premium accelerators or HBM can carry a very different margin from mature-node or conventional memory products.

3. Costs decide the margin outcome

Materials, energy, labor, depreciation and research spending rise as companies add capacity. Operating leverage helps when factories run closer to full utilization, but a large construction program can initially increase depreciation and financing needs. Currency movements matter because many Asian manufacturers report in local currencies while selling to customers and buying equipment in dollars or other currencies.

4. Market position determines the share of value captured

Technology leadership, qualification history and customer concentration affect bargaining power. A sole or leading supplier of a difficult component can retain more of the economics than a contract manufacturer competing on assembly cost. The result is why two companies exposed to the same AI build-out can post very different earnings growth.

What the major supply-chain segments contribute

Segment Growth mechanism What to watch
Advanced logic and foundry manufacturing More wafers for AI accelerators and high-performance computing, often at leading process nodes. Node yields, utilization, pricing, capital expenditure and customer concentration.
Memory HBM and high-value DRAM support AI accelerators; NAND benefits from data-center storage demand. Bit supply, inventory, contract prices, mix between premium and commodity products.
Advanced packaging and testing Complex AI chips require more sophisticated integration and testing capacity. Equipment availability, package yields, expansion timing and customer qualification.
Servers, racks and networking Cloud-provider deployments generate orders for complete systems, switches, optical and electronic components. Rack volumes, bill of materials, delivery schedules and working capital.
Power and thermal equipment Higher-density data centers need power conversion, distribution and cooling infrastructure. Project timing, component shortages, regional construction and pricing.

The opportunity therefore extends well beyond chip designers. A company can benefit without making a processor if it supplies a bottleneck item or a high-value subsystem. Conversely, an apparent AI exposure may produce little profit if the company occupies a low-margin, easily substituted position.

Evidence from company results

TSMC: a clear example of earnings conversion

TSMC’s 2026 annual report says its 2025 US-dollar revenue rose 35.9% and net income increased 51.2%. It also reported higher gross and operating margins. The combination indicates more than demand growth: advanced-product mix, utilization and pricing allowed a larger share of revenue to reach the bottom line. The company said non-AI end markets had bottomed and begun a mild recovery, while expecting robust AI-related demand into 2026. Its outlook statement was: “We expect AI-related demand to continue to be robust, even as macroeconomic uncertainties persist.” That is management’s expectation, not a guarantee.

Foxconn: rack-scale volume and operating leverage

Hon Hai Technology Group reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of NT$2.53 trillion, up 41% year over year. Operating profit reached NT$94.8 billion, up 68%, and net profit was NT$60 billion, up 35%. The company cited sustained AI-server-rack volume growth driven by cloud-provider capital expenditure. Operating profit grew faster than revenue, consistent with favorable mix or operating leverage; net profit grew more slowly than operating profit, illustrating that financing, non-operating items or taxes can change the final earnings result.

Memory and semiconductor-cycle sensitivity

SK hynix points to demand for high-value DRAM, including HBM, and NAND as a driver. Memory earnings are unusually sensitive to supply discipline and pricing because inventories and industry capacity can change the market balance quickly. Strong AI demand can support premium memory even while other memory categories remain weak.

Mixed results inside diversified groups

Samsung’s FY2025 reporting illustrates why a country or company label is not enough. Semiconductor and mobile businesses can move in different directions in the same period: AI-memory demand may strengthen one segment while handset demand, product launches, marketing costs or component prices pressure another. Segment margins and operating profit are more informative than a headline group number alone.

Regional differences across Asia

Taiwan and South Korea

Taiwan is strongly exposed to advanced fabrication and related manufacturing, while South Korea has major positions in memory and associated technology. Their suppliers can capture a disproportionate share of AI infrastructure spending when leading-edge capacity and HBM are constrained. The trade-off is concentration: a change in cloud-provider budgets, technology architecture or inventory policy can affect national market earnings quickly.

China

China’s potential channels include cloud computing, AI products, domestic technology investment and hardware supply. Alibaba has reported accelerating cloud revenue and triple-digit year-over-year growth in AI-related product revenue. Those figures show rapid demand in selected businesses, not a uniform result for all Chinese technology companies. J.P. Morgan’s Asian earnings commentary also warns that elevated capital expenditure by Chinese hyperscalers can depress near-term cash flow while infrastructure is built ahead of monetization.

Japan and other Asian economies

Benefits depend on industrial mix and supply-chain position. Equipment, components, materials and overseas sales can provide exposure even where a country is not a leading producer of AI accelerators or memory. A diversified manufacturing base can cushion a downturn in one product, but economies with limited integration into AI hardware may receive a smaller direct export impulse. Company-level exposure varies widely within every country.

Cloud and AI services: a different earnings timetable

Hardware suppliers often recognize revenue when equipment ships. Cloud and AI-service providers must first spend on servers, data centers, software and talent, then attract workloads and convert usage into recurring revenue. That creates a timing gap between investment and return on capital.

Accelerating cloud sales or triple-digit growth in AI-related products can validate demand, but investors still need to examine infrastructure depreciation, data-center leases, research expense and pricing incentives. A service business may grow revenue while free cash flow weakens because capital expenditure is rising faster. The eventual payoff depends on utilization, customer retention, pricing and whether AI features command incremental fees rather than merely defending an existing franchise.

Why earnings growth can disappoint

  • Capital intensity: New fabs, packaging lines, servers and data centers require large upfront payments and can raise depreciation before revenue arrives.
  • Concentration: A small group of cloud customers, products or countries may account for much of the growth, increasing sensitivity to a few decisions.
  • Cost inflation: Energy, wages, specialized equipment, freight and financing can absorb gains in selling prices.
  • Product substitution: A new chip design, memory standard or in-house accelerator can reduce demand for a previously favored component.
  • Consumer cyclicality: Smartphones, PCs and other electronics can weaken even while data-center orders remain strong.
  • Execution and yield risk: Delayed plants, poor yields, packaging bottlenecks or qualification failures postpone shipments.
  • Forecast risk: Institutional estimates are not outcomes. AI adoption, cloud budgets and component prices can move faster than forecasts are revised.

How to judge whether the AI dividend is durable

Do not rely on an AI label. Use a sequence of operating checks in each company’s filings and earnings calls:

  1. Identify the actual product: Separate AI-related revenue from general data-center, smartphone or industrial sales.
  2. Measure customer breadth: Check whether growth comes from several customers or one hyperscaler and whether contracts are recurring or project-based.
  3. Compare volume, price and mix: Rising revenue driven by premium HBM or leading-edge wafers has different durability from a one-time shipment surge.
  4. Track margins: Gross margin, operating margin and segment profit show whether scarcity and mix are being retained after costs.
  5. Reconcile earnings with cash flow: Compare operating cash generation with capital expenditure, inventory and receivables. High accounting profit with heavy working-capital use deserves scrutiny.
  6. Review capacity plans: Expansion can protect market share, but an industry-wide capacity wave may eventually weaken pricing.
  7. Test non-AI resilience: Examine whether consumer, automotive, industrial or communications businesses are recovering or adding offsetting risk.

Putting regional forecasts in context

J.P. Morgan Asset Management reported on September 1, 2026, using data available August 31, that 80% of the Asia technology companies in its reporting coverage recorded positive year-over-year earnings growth in the second quarter of 2026. Its index-level analysis covered companies representing approximately 80–85% of market capitalization. The 80% figure therefore describes that covered company set and quarter; it is not a census of every Asian technology business.

That breadth is encouraging, but it should not be confused with equal growth or equal quality. A company can post positive year-over-year earnings because of a low comparison base, while another benefits from structural pricing power. Forecasts of 12–13% growth in 2026 and 10–11% in 2027 likewise use a particular index, geography and methodology. They should be compared with the company’s own guidance and cash-flow trajectory rather than treated as a single sector-wide measurement.

What the outlook means for readers

Asia’s technology earnings growth is best understood as a chain reaction: AI and cloud investment create demand; constrained capacity and premium mix determine shipments and pricing; operating costs and capital intensity determine margins and cash; and each company’s competitive position determines how much of the value it keeps. Taiwan and South Korea have especially direct hardware exposure, China offers a large but investment-heavy cloud and AI-services channel, and Japan and other economies participate through equipment, components, diversified manufacturing and overseas businesses. The opportunity is substantial, but its durability depends on monetization, supply discipline and execution rather than on AI spending alone.
