In a U.S. bank’s name, “N.A.” stands for “National Association.” The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) says the initials may indicate a national bank’s corporate status. It is a legal naming clue—not a rating of the bank or a description of an account’s terms.
What does N.A. mean after a bank’s name?
The OCC states: “The words ‘national association’ or the initials ‘N.A.’ may be used to indicate a national bank’s corporate status.” In other words, the suffix points to the bank’s legal status; it does not describe the products or services offered.
The OCC also says national banks must include the word “national” in their legal title under 12 U.S.C. 22. That legal-title requirement is separate from the explanation of what the “N.A.” suffix means.
Is a bank with N.A. a national bank?
“N.A.” is an indicator of national-bank corporate status, but the suffix alone is not a substitute for checking an institution’s current official record. The OCC distinguishes national banks from federal savings associations, and other types of banks may have different regulators.

The OCC charters, regulates, and supervises national banks. To check a particular institution, use the OCC Financial Institution Search, which lets you search by bank name or charter number and consult active institution information.
You can also review the OCC’s Financial Institution Lists to see its institution categories. The OCC list page showed institutions active as of August 31, 2026, when checked; verify the current record when looking up a specific bank.
