American Airlines’ partnership with Canada’s Porter Airlines is a codeshare: it lets each carrier sell selected flights operated by the other. It can add ways to build trips between the United States and Canada, but it does not make every Porter flight an American flight for booking or rewards purposes. AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points depend on the flight being marketed under American’s code, and American says status alone does not add benefits when you fly on Porter.
What the partnership does
Announced on September 29, 2025, the arrangement allows American and Porter to market selected flights on one another’s networks. In a codeshare, the airline selling a segment may not be the airline operating it. You might book a flight with an American flight number, for example, while Porter operates that segment.
The practical change is the potential for more itinerary combinations connecting Porter’s Canadian network with American’s U.S. network. It is a booking and marketing arrangement, not a merger, and it does not mean every flight on either airline is available under the other carrier’s code.
Which routes are included?
At launch, American said it would place its code on selected Porter flights from Toronto Pearson, including Porter’s Toronto–Phoenix service, with additional transborder service to follow. Porter, in turn, would market selected American flights, including routes through Charlotte, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth and Philadelphia. The airlines described Canadian and U.S. destinations rolling out immediately and in the weeks after the announcement.

How to tell whether a trip suits you
A codeshare can make a connecting itinerary easier to find or book, but the partnership alone does not establish that a trip will be cheaper, faster or more convenient. Compare the actual itinerary rather than assuming the shared airline branding means identical service.

When Porter flights earn AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points
American’s current Porter Airlines partner page says AAdvantage members earn miles and Loyalty Points on American-marketed flights operated by Porter. It expressly excludes Porter flights with flight numbers beginning “PD.” In other words, the operating airline alone does not determine eligibility: check the marketing flight number and the fare’s eligibility before booking.
Do not assume that a Porter-operated flight qualifies simply because it appears in an itinerary sold through American, or that every fare earns the same amount. Consult American’s current Porter-specific terms for the ticket you plan to buy.

What AAdvantage status does—and does not—provide
American says AAdvantage status members receive no added travel benefits when flying on Porter. It lists a limited set of benefits for a specific combination: dedicated check-in, expedited security screening and early boarding on a Porter flight marketed by American when the traveler also has a First or Business cabin flight on American connecting to or from Canada.
That condition is narrower than simply holding AAdvantage status or having any American connection. Check the current rules for your itinerary rather than assuming status benefits apply across the Porter segment.

Are reciprocal loyalty benefits available?
The September 2025 announcement said the airlines intended to consider further destinations and loyalty integration, including earning and redeeming points on both airlines. That statement described a future possibility, not proof those reciprocal benefits had launched. American’s current Porter-specific page documents AAdvantage earning on qualifying American-marketed Porter flights; it does not state that reciprocal Porter loyalty earning or AAdvantage redemption on Porter is active.

What the announcement does not establish
The airlines framed the partnership as providing more transborder travel options. The official materials cited here do not establish a partnership-specific fare reduction, passenger increase, market-share gain or travel-time saving. The value for an individual traveler therefore depends on whether current schedules, prices, connections and applicable rewards rules work for that trip.
