What Does “Field of Study” Mean? How to Answer on a Form

A field of study is the subject area you studied, such as nursing or history—not the level of your qualification. Here’s how to answer when a form asks.

A field of study is the subject or discipline covered by an education programme or course—such as nursing, history, or computer science. If a form asks for yours, enter the subject area, not the qualification level, and check which programme or credential the form means.

What does “field of study” mean?

It means the subject area or discipline a person studies. UNESCO defines the related term “field of education” as the broad content area covered by a programme, course, or module; it is often called a subject or discipline, and may also be called a field of study. UNESCO’s glossary uses that definition. Statistics Canada likewise describes field of study as the discipline or area of learning or training associated with a course or programme. Examples include biology, history, nursing, engineering, and computer science. The phrase identifies what you studied, not the credential you earned.

What should you write on a form?

Enter the subject or discipline of the programme the question refers to. For example, write “nursing” rather than “bachelor’s degree”: nursing is a field, while a bachelor’s degree is a qualification level.

Check the form’s wording and instructions before choosing which programme to report. It might ask about your current programme, your most recently completed course, or the field associated with your highest qualification. Statistics Canada notes that these are possible reference points when assigning a person’s field of study.

Is a field of study the same as a major?

In everyday use, “field of study” is close in meaning to “subject,” “discipline,” or “area of learning.” “Major” often means a student’s primary subject, but institutions and countries may define or classify these terms differently. Use the form’s own labels and category instructions when they are provided.

For example, Australia’s TEQSA glossary groups “field of study” with “field of education.” Its categories for courses and specialisations can reflect similarities in potential professions, while units are coded according to similarities in subject matter. TEQSA’s glossary

How is a field different from a level of education?

A field names the subject area; a level describes the kind or stage of qualification. “History” and “engineering” are fields. “Bachelor’s,” “master’s,” and “doctoral” describe levels. A form may ask for both, but they are separate details: the Philippine Statistics Authority’s classification treats education level and field of education as separate variables. What if your programme covers more than one subject?

Follow the form’s instructions or select the closest available category. UNECE recommends using the principal field when an interdisciplinary programme has a dominant major subject. If it covers several fields and none is dominant, UNECE recommends an interdisciplinary category; some forms may permit more than one answer. UNECE’s guidance on classifying fields of study

  • If one subject clearly defines the programme, report that principal field.
  • If several subjects are equally central, look for an interdisciplinary option or instructions allowing multiple fields.
  • If the form’s categories do not fit neatly, use its guidance rather than inventing a category.

Why do field-of-study lists vary?

There is no single list that every school, country, or form must use. UNESCO’s ISCED-F 2013 is an international framework for classifying fields in education statistics. Countries can use more detailed national categories and map them to the international framework; UNECE recommends ISCED-F 2013 when international comparability is needed.

The Philippine Statistics Authority’s 2017 classification notes describe the ISCED-F hierarchy as 11 broad fields, 58 narrow fields, and 149 detailed fields. Those counts describe that classification hierarchy, not the choices every form will offer. Philippine Statistics Authority technical notes

Categories also depend on the reporting purpose. For example, OECD’s Education at a Glance 2020 used eight broad fields: education; arts and humanities; social sciences, journalism and information; business, administration and law; natural sciences, mathematics and statistics; information and communication technologies; engineering, manufacturing and construction; and health and welfare.
