CFA stands for Chartered Financial Analyst. It is a professional designation awarded by CFA Institute, not a title earned simply by passing exams. To use “CFA” after your name, you must complete all three CFA Program exam levels and Practical Skills Modules, meet the qualifying work-experience requirement, apply for charterholder membership, provide references, and become a member.

What does CFA mean after someone’s name?

The letters identify someone who has earned the CFA charter and is a CFA Institute charterholder member. CFA Institute describes the designation as evidence of “a strong understanding of advanced investment analysis and real-world portfolio management skills.” It also reflects a commitment to professional ethics.

That description is the Institute’s account of what the credential is intended to represent; it is not a guarantee of a particular job, salary, investment result, or level of ability in every task. CFA Institute distinguishes charterholder membership from its Professional and Associate memberships: those other membership categories do not authorize use of the CFA designation.

Can you use CFA after passing the exams?

No. Passing all three exams is necessary, but it does not by itself confer the charter or the right to put “CFA” after your name. You must also complete the Practical Skills Modules, satisfy the qualifying experience requirement, submit a membership application and references, and become a charterholder member.

How do you become a CFA charterholder?

  1. Pass all three CFA Program exam levels and complete the Practical Skills Modules. Level I emphasizes foundational terms, concepts, and formulas; Level II focuses on analysis and selecting solutions; Level III assesses integration and application in real-world scenarios. CFA Institute also requires completion of Practical Skills Modules intended to help candidates apply knowledge to industry scenarios. Its Learning Ecosystem and exam practice resources are among the study tools it lists.
  2. Accumulate qualifying work experience. CFA Institute requires at least 4,000 hours over a minimum of 36 months. Experience can be earned before, during, or after participation in the program. The work must be directly involved in investment decision-making or produce work that informs or adds value to that process.
  3. Apply for charterholder membership and provide professional references. CFA Institute’s membership guidance calls for three professional references, or two if one is an active member of the local society to which you apply. The application is the step that turns completed program and experience requirements into a request for charterholder membership.
  4. Maintain the professional obligation. CFA Institute’s 2026 results announcement says charterholders attest annually to abide by its Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct.

What work experience counts?

The title of a job alone does not determine eligibility; the responsibilities matter. CFA Institute says qualifying work may include evaluating or applying financial, economic, or statistical data in investment decision-making, supervising those activities, or teaching them. The experience may be full-time, part-time, or remote. Applicants describe their actual responsibilities, and CFA Institute assesses whether they qualify.

Is a CFA study guide required?

No. CFA Institute’s program requirements are the exams, Practical Skills Modules, qualifying experience, and membership steps—not a particular book or outside course. A level-specific CFA study guide or exam-prep book is an optional aid for organizing study and practice, not a charter requirement or a CFA Institute endorsement.

What does the CFA pass-rate figure tell you?

CFA Institute reported that 11,269 candidates sat for the Level III exam in February 2026 and that 50 percent passed. This is a result for one exam level and one exam window; it is not a full-program pass rate or an estimate of any individual candidate’s probability of success.
