Bring the documents the summons specifically requests, organized for the tax period and issue it identifies. There is no universal GST summons document pack: Section 70 of India’s CGST Act allows the proper officer to require evidence, documents, or other things in an inquiry, so the summons and any referenced requisition should guide what you prepare.
What documents should I bring to a GST summons?
Start with the summons and any related correspondence. Make a list of each requested document or category and note the relevant tax period. Then gather records that respond to those requests. Depending on what the officer seeks, examples could include:

- Invoices, books of account, or ledgers
- Reconciliations
- Contracts
- Payment records
- Transport records
- GST returns
These are examples, not a statutory checklist. Do not assume every item on the list must be produced; match your records to the actual summons and your circumstances. Section 70(1) gives the proper officer power to summon a person to give evidence or produce a document or other thing in an inquiry. Read Section 70 of the CGST Act.

Put responsive records in a clear order, such as by request category and period, and prepare an index. Keep a copy of what you produce and record what was handed over. These are practical steps, not special statutory formalities identified in the sources.

If a requested record is unavailable, incomplete, or needs explanation, identify that clearly and get qualified advice before improvising an answer.
Check whether a return is already on the GST portal
CBIC Instruction No. 03/2022-23 (GST-Investigation), dated 17 August 2022, notes that statutory returns such as GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B are available online and cautions officers against routinely summoning records available through the GST portal. That guidance concerns how officers issue summonses; it does not let you disregard a record the summons specifically asks you to produce. Read CBIC Instruction No. 03/2022-23.

What happens at a GST summons hearing?
A summons under Section 70 may require you to attend to give evidence, produce records, or both. The inquiry is deemed a judicial proceeding under the provisions cited in the Act, so answer truthfully and carefully. Do not guess if you do not know an answer; explain what you know and seek advice about how to address gaps or disputed facts.

When should you get professional advice?
Consider speaking with a qualified GST practitioner, chartered accountant, or tax lawyer experienced in GST investigations if the request involves disputed facts, substantial document production, or examination. Advice may also help if a record is missing or incomplete. Professional representation is not automatically required; follow the summons and get advice suited to the specific issues it raises.
