Apple CEO Tim Cook presented President Donald Trump with an engraved, circular glass Apple plaque mounted on a 24-karat-gold base during an Oval Office event on August 6, 2025. The gift accompanied Apple’s announcement of an additional $100 billion U.S. investment commitment, which Apple said brought its planned four-year U.S. investment total to $600 billion.
Calling it simply a “gold plaque” is misleading: the visible centerpiece was glass, while the gold was used for the base.

What exactly was the gift?
The object was a customized desktop display: an engraved glass Apple disc or plaque set into a 24-karat-gold base. White House photographs show Cook placing the piece on the Resolute Desk before the investment announcement. The White House described the gift as made from glass connected to Apple’s planned Kentucky manufacturing activity. Official White House photographs and captions document the presentation.
The available source material confirms that the piece was engraved, but does not provide a reliable full transcription of the inscription. It also does not establish the object’s designer, gold weight, retail equivalent or monetary value.

Why did Cook present it?
The presentation took place alongside Apple’s announcement of a new $100 billion U.S. investment commitment. Apple said that additional commitment raised its stated four-year U.S. investment total to $600 billion. The announcement also introduced Apple’s American Manufacturing Program, which is intended to expand domestic production and encourage suppliers to manufacture additional components in the United States.
Apple said the program involved suppliers and partners including Corning, Coherent, GlobalWafers America, Applied Materials, Texas Instruments, Samsung, GlobalFoundries, Amkor and Broadcom. The company projected support for more than 450,000 supplier and partner jobs and said it planned to hire 20,000 people directly in the United States over four years, primarily in research and development, silicon engineering, software, artificial intelligence and machine learning. Those figures are Apple’s announced plans and company-reported estimates, not independently verified economic results.

What does Kentucky have to do with the plaque?
Apple and Corning separately announced a $2.5 billion commitment connected to Corning’s Harrodsburg, Kentucky, facility. Apple said the facility would be dedicated to Apple production and would make all of the cover glass for iPhone and Apple Watch units sold worldwide in the United States for the first time. The companies also said they would expand Kentucky manufacturing and engineering employment by 50% and establish an innovation center there.
The partnership dates back to the original iPhone and includes production of Ceramic Shield glass. Apple’s announcement is about cover-glass manufacturing for selected Apple devices—not complete iPhone or Apple Watch assembly. Apple’s Corning announcement provides the company’s details.

The Kentucky connection should therefore be stated carefully. The White House linked the gift’s glass to Apple’s Kentucky plans, but the available evidence does not prove that the displayed glass had already been produced there or that the gold, engraving, base fabrication and final assembly all occurred in Kentucky. It also does not establish that the entire object was made in America.
Does the 24-karat description tell us the value?
No. “24-karat” describes the purity of gold, not the amount of gold in the base. Without a verified weight, dimensions, fabrication method, design costs and provenance, any dollar estimate would be speculative. The sources reviewed do not establish a reliable value for the plaque.

It is also inaccurate to treat the $600 billion figure as money Apple had already spent. Apple described it as a planned four-year U.S. investment commitment. Nor does it mean $600 billion in new factories, direct government funding, jobs or complete U.S. device manufacturing.

The observable facts are limited: Cook gave Trump the customized object during a public event focused on Apple’s U.S. investment and manufacturing plans. The glass-and-gold design visually fit that event’s American manufacturing theme.

Claims that the gift was specifically intended to influence tariffs, secure favorable treatment or avoid regulation are interpretations unless supported by direct evidence. The available sources do not establish Cook’s private motive, and they do not by themselves establish that the gift was illegal or violated federal gift rules.
What changed after the 2025 presentation?
Apple’s later updates provide subsequent developments, not facts known when Cook presented the plaque. In February 2026, Apple said the Kentucky manufacturing effort was advancing. In March 2026, the company said Corning’s Harrodsburg facility was 100% dedicated to iPhone and Apple Watch cover glass and that it expected every new iPhone and Apple Watch to have Kentucky-made cover glass by the end of 2026. Apple also announced additional American Manufacturing Program partners. See Apple’s March 2026 update and its February 2026 update.
