For U.S. federal income tax purposes, crypto held as an investment is generally treated as property. Selling it, trading it for another digital asset, or using it to buy goods or services can create a taxable gain or loss—even when no dollars change hands. The calculation generally compares your amount realized with your adjusted basis, and you may need to report taxable activity whether or not you receive a broker tax form.

This guide covers federal rules for individuals who hold crypto as an investment. State rules and an individual’s tax result depend on location and circumstances; this is general information, not personal tax advice.

When a crypto transaction can create a capital gain or loss

The IRS treats digital assets as property for federal income tax purposes, so general property-tax principles apply. When you dispose of crypto held as a capital asset, the transaction generally produces a capital gain or loss. A disposition can happen without converting the asset to U.S. dollars.

Selling crypto for dollars

A sale for U.S. dollars is generally a disposition. The gain or loss is generally the amount realized minus your adjusted basis. Amount realized can include cash and the fair market value of services received, reduced by transaction costs allocable to the disposition under IRS guidance.

Trading one digital asset for another

Exchanging one digital asset for another can be a taxable disposition of the asset you give up. The fact that you kept the value in crypto rather than cashing out does not, by itself, prevent a gain or loss from being recognized.

Using crypto or transferring it

Using crypto to pay for goods or services can be a disposition. Other transfers of ownership or financial interest may also matter. By contrast, moving assets between wallets you own is different from selling or otherwise disposing of them; do not treat every wallet movement as a taxable sale. The transaction’s facts determine its treatment.

How to calculate basis, proceeds, and gain or loss

Basis generally starts with what you paid for the asset in U.S. dollars. Purchase fees and other acquisition costs may be included in basis under the applicable rules. For a disposition, compare that adjusted basis with the amount realized, taking account of transaction costs allocable to the disposition.

Illustration: If you bought an investment asset for $1,000 and later disposed of it for an amount realized of $1,400, the basic calculation would be $1,400 minus your adjusted basis. If your basis remained $1,000, the resulting gain would be $400. This simplified example leaves out fees, basis adjustments, and other facts that may affect an actual return.

For each asset lot, you need enough information to establish what was acquired, when and in what quantity, what it cost in U.S. dollars, and what was received when it was disposed of. If an exchange or wallet history is missing, reconstructing basis and documenting the calculation can be difficult.

Short-term versus long-term treatment

For capital assets, the holding period is generally short-term if you held the asset for one year or less, and long-term if you held it for more than one year. The holding period can affect tax treatment, but no single rate applies to every investor. Any rate or final tax result depends on factors such as taxable income, filing status, tax year, and other applicable rules.

Records to gather before preparing a return

Keep a complete transaction history across exchanges and wallets, along with records that support the amounts and dates you report. Useful records include:

  • The asset and quantity acquired or disposed of.
  • Acquisition and disposition dates and, where available, times.
  • U.S.-dollar fair market values at acquisition and disposition.
  • Purchase and disposition fees and other relevant costs.
  • Exchange confirmations, wallet records, and other supporting transaction documents.
  • Information needed to identify transfers between your own wallets and distinguish them from dispositions.

Basis depends on the transaction type. If a transaction history is incomplete, preserve the information you do have and investigate gaps before filing rather than assuming that missing broker data means the basis is zero or that the transaction does not need to be reported.

How Form 1099-DA fits into crypto tax reporting

For digital-asset transactions in 2025, U.S. brokers generally begin using Form 1099-DA to report gross proceeds. The IRS says these 2025 forms generally will not include basis, so investors may need their own records to determine it. Broker reporting is an information-reporting system; it does not establish that every transaction across all of a person’s exchanges and wallets has been captured.

A broker’s reported proceeds are not the same thing as taxable gain. The gain or loss calculation also depends on basis and other relevant adjustments. Review broker information against your own transaction records, including activity outside the reporting broker.

Where to report individual capital transactions

For individual capital transactions, IRS guidance directs taxpayers to Form 8949 and Schedule D as applicable. Form 8949 is used to reconcile transaction information—including proceeds and basis shown on forms such as Form 1099-DA—with the figures reported on the return. A tax form from a broker does not replace the taxpayer’s responsibility to report taxable activity, and that responsibility remains even if no information return arrives.

Use the forms and instructions for the tax year you are filing. Reporting requirements and forms can change, so check current IRS instructions when preparing a return.

Keep crypto income separate from capital gains

Some digital-asset receipts, including certain staking, mining, or compensation transactions, may be treated as ordinary income and reported under separate rules and on different forms. That income event is distinct from the later sale or other disposition of the asset: receiving an asset may create an income-reporting issue, while a subsequent disposition may separately create a capital gain or loss.

Can crypto tax software help?

Tax-tracking software can help organize activity from multiple exchanges and wallets and produce tax-oriented reports. CoinTracker describes U.S. outputs including Form 8949 and Schedule D, integrations with tax-filing software, and paid-plan access for some reports; it also says its tools do not themselves provide tax filing or preparation services. Koinly describes reports that include Form 8949, Schedule D, and Schedule 1, and notes that disposal-basis calculations depend on complete transaction history. These are vendor descriptions, not independent verification that a report is accurate or a substitute for reviewing your records and the IRS instructions.

When evaluating a service, check whether it supports your exchanges and wallets, can import or reconcile Form 1099-DA information, and handles transfers, fees, and missing basis in a way you can review. Also compare the forms and export formats it provides, compatibility with your filing workflow, transaction-volume limits, cost, and how much manual review is required. No software can reliably fill gaps in records it does not have.

A practical filing sequence

  1. Collect records: Export transaction histories and gather confirmations from each exchange and wallet you used.
  2. Classify activity: Identify acquisitions, sales, crypto-to-crypto exchanges, payments, income receipts, and transfers between wallets you own.
  3. Reconcile basis and proceeds: Match each disposition to supporting acquisition records, account for applicable fees, and compare your transaction history with broker statements.
  4. Prepare the applicable forms: Use Form 8949 and Schedule D as applicable for individual capital transactions, following the instructions for the tax year being filed.
  5. Address unresolved gaps: If missing records or complex transactions prevent a confident calculation, seek qualified tax help rather than treating a software estimate as definitive.
