To buy cryptocurrency in India and move it to a self-custody wallet, choose a provider subject to India’s applicable virtual digital asset (VDA) service-provider obligations, confirm that it supports withdrawals of your exact asset on the network your wallet accepts, then verify the destination address and transaction details. Send a small test amount and confirm it arrives before transferring more. Tax deducted at source (TDS) under section 194S is a withholding mechanism, not a complete calculation of your final tax liability.
Before buying: check the provider and its withdrawal support
India’s VDA service-provider rules apply to specified activities such as exchanging VDAs and fiat, transferring VDAs, and safekeeping or administering them. A Press Information Bureau release says providers operating in India, whether offshore or onshore, that conduct covered activities must register with FIU-IND as reporting entities and comply with obligations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The FIU-India downloads page lists AML/CFT guidelines updated 8 January 2026 and a VDA service-provider registration circular dated 15 September 2025.
Check a provider’s current registration and terms directly before opening or funding an account; the available sources do not establish the status or withdrawal capabilities of any particular exchange. See the PIB release on VDA service-provider obligations and FIU-India’s downloads page.
- Confirm that the provider lets you withdraw the specific asset you intend to buy, rather than only trade it on the platform.
- Check the provider’s withdrawal rules for that asset, including its available blockchain networks, fees, minimums, limits, and any restrictions. These details are provider-specific and can change.
- Verify that your receiving wallet supports the same asset on the same network. Do this before purchasing if the ability to withdraw is essential to your plan.
Understand the TDS context before you trade
Section 194S concerns tax deducted at source on consideration for transferring a VDA. The Income Tax Department’s guidance describes a 1% TDS mechanism, explains who may have to deduct in exchange transactions, and gives applicable thresholds. The department says its page is informational and advises checking the applicable Acts, rules, and notifications. Read its TDS guidance for transfers of VDAs and section 194S guidance.

TDS is withholding; it does not by itself determine your complete tax position. The relevant treatment for you depends on your facts and the applicable law. For a personal tax calculation, consult current official material or a qualified Indian tax professional.
Set up the self-custody wallet and match the network
In a self-custody wallet, you control the keys that authorize transactions. The wallet may be a software wallet or an optional hardware wallet; a hardware wallet is not a requirement for self-custody. If you choose one, check that it supports the exact asset and network you plan to receive.

When preparing a withdrawal, match the sending provider’s selected network to the network supported by the receiving wallet for that asset. Similar-looking asset names or addresses do not establish that two networks are compatible. An incompatible route can result in permanent loss. Check the withdrawal screen and the wallet’s receiving instructions immediately before sending. Ledger’s receiving guidance also stresses using the same blockchain network on the sending and receiving sides: Ledger Support: Receiving Assets.

- Open the wallet’s receive screen. Select the exact asset and network, then display its receiving address. Use the wallet’s own instructions to confirm you are viewing the correct network.
- Enter the withdrawal at the provider. Select the same asset and network, and enter the receiving address. Review any additional destination fields the provider requires for that asset; do not guess at their meaning.
- Verify the full address independently. After copying and pasting, compare the address shown by the provider with the address displayed by your wallet. Malware can replace clipboard addresses, so do not assume a pasted address is correct.
- Check the transaction details. Confirm the recipient address, amount, network, and fee on the provider’s confirmation screen. If using a hardware wallet, check the address and transaction details on the device itself before approving.
- Send a small test amount. Wait until the wallet shows that the transaction was received correctly. Only then submit a larger transfer, repeating the address and transaction checks.
Ledger’s vendor-authored support guidance recommends checking the address after copy and paste, verifying the address, amount, and fees on the device, and sending a small amount before a larger transfer. This is safety guidance from the wallet provider, not a report of independent testing. See Ledger Support’s transaction-verification guidance.

If something does not match, stop before submitting
- The wallet does not list the provider’s network: Do not send using a different network as a workaround. Find a route supported by both sides or choose a compatible asset and wallet setup.
- The address differs after pasting: Cancel the withdrawal. Reopen the wallet’s receive screen, copy the address again, and verify it character by character before trying again.
- The fee, minimum, or limit is unexpected: Do not submit until you understand the provider’s current terms and the amount that will actually arrive. Withdrawal terms can vary by provider and asset.
- The test transfer has not arrived: Do not send the larger amount. Check the provider’s transaction status and the wallet’s instructions for that asset and network; contact the provider or wallet support if needed.
