Debt could matter to Bitcoin indirectly if it changes expectations for inflation, the dollar, interest rates, liquidity or investors’ appetite for risk—but the evidence cited here does not show that the milestone caused a move in Bitcoin or that Bitcoin is a dependable hedge against debt stress.
What does the $40 trillion figure count?
An Associated Press report in August 2026 said gross U.S. federal debt had crossed $40 trillion. Gross debt includes Treasury securities held by the public and securities held by federal government accounts. It is not the same as debt held by the public, which the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) uses as its principal measure when examining the government’s effect on credit markets. Debt subject to the statutory limit is another measure and excludes some debt counted in gross debt.

That distinction matters because the headline figure is not itself a measure of how much borrowing is competing with private borrowers in credit markets, nor is it a threshold that automatically triggers a market event.
What risks does rising federal debt create?
The CBO’s February 2026 baseline describes risks if debt held by the public continues to grow faster than the economy. Higher borrowing costs could affect the wider economy; private investment and output growth could weaken; and rising interest costs could leave the federal government more exposed to higher rates and a fiscal crisis. The CBO also warns that expectations of higher inflation could erode confidence in the dollar’s international reserve role. These are conditional risks, not automatic effects of crossing a round-number total.

- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
The CBO’s baseline projects that the federal government will borrow an additional $26 trillion between the end of 2025 and the end of 2036, with debt held by the public reaching $56 trillion, or 120% of GDP, at the end of 2036. These are projections, not observed outcomes. In the same baseline, net interest outlays are projected at $1.0 trillion in 2026 and $2.1 trillion in 2036. The CBO projects average annual growth of 7.5% in net interest outlays over that period, with net interest rising from 3.3% of GDP in 2026 to 4.6% in 2036.
In its March 2025 presentation, the CBO summarized its assessment this way: “In CBO’s assessment, large and growing federal debt increases long-run interest rates, reduces economic growth, and increases the risk of a fiscal crisis and other adverse outcomes.” It has not identified a debt-to-GDP ratio at which a crisis becomes certain. The CBO says risk also depends on the long-term budget outlook, near-term borrowing needs and the health of the economy. The dollar’s reserve-currency role and the government’s ability to borrow in dollars make a crisis like those experienced by some other countries less likely, but do not eliminate the risk.

There is also a counterweight to claims that Treasury borrowing must immediately lose market support. The Government Accountability Office reported that Treasury auctions continued to attract sufficient demand from a variety of investors as of September 30, 2025. The GAO also warned that unsustainable debt, debt-limit impasses or a potential decline in the dollar’s international role could weaken demand or raise borrowing costs.

The possible connection is indirect. Debt concerns might influence expectations about Treasury yields, inflation, the dollar or liquidity, or change how much risk investors are willing to take. Those changing conditions could affect demand for Bitcoin. That is a plausible transmission channel, not proof of a dependable relationship between the debt total and Bitcoin’s price.

The AP’s August 2026 coverage noted movement in Bitcoin, gold and the dollar around the debt milestone and Treasury-market developments. The fact that markets moved at the same time does not establish that the debt milestone caused Bitcoin’s movement. The available evidence does not quantify a causal effect of the $40 trillion threshold on Bitcoin returns or provide a return forecast.
Does the evidence show Bitcoin is a hedge against debt stress?
No dependable safe-haven conclusion follows from the studies cited here. Their methods and periods differ, so their findings are not interchangeable; together, however, they do not establish Bitcoin as a reliable hedge against macroeconomic or fiscal stress.

| Source and method | Finding relevant to Bitcoin | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| New York Fed staff report; intraday event study of monetary and macroeconomic news | Bitcoin was orthogonal to the news in the study’s sample, a result the authors described as puzzling. | It does not demonstrate that Bitcoin reliably responds to debt or inflation concerns. |
| Chicago Fed working paper, published in 2026 | The authors report that Bitcoin’s exposure to equities rose over time and became statistically positive around 2020 in their specifications. Its betas to Treasury returns were not distinguishable from zero. | The findings depend on the authors’ specifications. The paper says its findings are the authors’ responsibility and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Chicago Fed or Federal Reserve System. |
| Kansas City Fed analysis of government bonds, gold and Bitcoin, January 1995 through February 2020 | The 10-year Treasury acted as a safe haven consistently in the periods studied, gold occasionally and Bitcoin never. During stress periods, Bitcoin’s correlation with the S&P 500 was generally positive. | This is a historical, sample-bound result, not a forecast. The analysis separately found Bitcoin’s positive correlation with the S&P 500 in March 2020 statistically significant. |
The Kansas City Fed’s historical comparison is especially relevant to the word “hedge”: in the periods it examined, Bitcoin tended to move more like a risk asset than a safe haven during stress. That past behavior does not guarantee how Bitcoin will behave in a future episode, but it does make a confident claim that Bitcoin protects against federal-debt risk difficult to support.
What should an investor watch instead of the headline total?
The debt number alone offers little basis for a Bitcoin decision. A more disciplined way to assess the possible connection is to separate fiscal developments from the market conditions through which they might matter:

- Fiscal outlook: distinguish observed debt figures from CBO projections, and note whether a cited figure is gross debt or debt held by the public.
- Borrowing conditions: watch for evidence of changing Treasury borrowing costs or auction demand rather than assuming that a large debt total means demand has disappeared.
- Macro expectations: consider whether there is evidence of changing inflation expectations, confidence in the dollar or liquidity—the potential channels linking fiscal concern to asset demand.
- Bitcoin’s behavior: treat any simultaneous price movement as an observation, not proof of cause. The studies above show that results depend on the sample and method.
These checks do not turn the debt total into a Bitcoin forecast. They help keep a fiscal-risk argument from being mistaken for evidence of a predictable trade.
