PerthNow reported in June 2024 that Circles of Hair owner Sharlene Lee helped employees with expenses including a car, mortgage support, surgery, a shared first-home purchase, concert tickets and business-class travel. The account describes Lee’s approach to supporting staff; it does not establish that the transactions were independently documented or that they improved retention.
What Lee reportedly paid for or helped employees buy
In an exclusive published on 14 June 2024, PerthNow’s Kellie Balaam reported examples Lee described of helping employees with major expenses. The article attributes the accounts to Lee and the employees; the reviewed sources do not include payment records, contracts or repayment histories.
- Surgery: PerthNow reported that Lee put an employee’s $21,000 surgery expense on her American Express card after the employee’s bank could not provide funds in time. The amount was to be repaid.
- First home: Lee reportedly went halves with a long-serving employee on a $500,000 first-home purchase. The employee and her husband later bought Lee out.
- Mortgage and car: The report listed a $12,000 contribution toward an employee’s mortgage and help with a car.
- Other experiences: The examples also included concert tickets and business-class travel.
These were individual arrangements, not a published staff-benefits schedule. PerthNow did not set out the terms for each item.
What the reported Amex charges mean
PerthNow reported that Lee had more than $300,000 in American Express card charges in April 2024 after helping staff with costly payments. That figure is the reported card-charge total for that month, not a verified total of staff benefits: the article did not provide a breakdown of the charges. It also said larger expenses were handled on a payment plan.

Why Lee said she helps her team
Lee told PerthNow that giving back after becoming successful was part of her motivation. She also described the support as a way of looking after employees amid cost-of-living pressures and retaining staff. The available sources do not provide independent retention data or establish that the reported gestures caused employees to stay.
Circles of Hair and its award record
At the time of PerthNow’s June 2024 report, Circles of Hair had salons in Subiaco and Perth CBD and Lee said it had 52 team members. The salon’s current about page lists Subiaco and Fitzgerald locations in Perth and describes more than 50 stylists across two salons.
