China’s announcement of more than 35 million tons of high-purity quartz reserves is a significant resource finding, but it does not show that China can yet replace U.S. supply. Official sources report promising pilot-grade material; they do not establish commercial output at the announced scale or an end to imports. The accompanying €1.4 billion valuation is not substantiated by a transparent calculation in the cited reporting.
What China announced—and what the number does not mean
On April 10, China’s Ministry of Natural Resources announced more than 35 million tons of high-purity quartz reserves in Henan and Xinjiang, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s 2026 Mineral Commodity Summary. This is an announced reserve figure. It should not be read as 35 million tons of purified quartz ready to ship: the cited announcement does not establish the deposits’ exact distribution, recoverable yield, production capacity, or commercial output.
The same USGS summary reports initial test grades of 99.995% to 99.998% silicon dioxide (SiO₂). That is evidence of promising material and processing progress, not proof that the reserve can be purified consistently at industrial scale.
How pure is the quartz, and how does it compare?
China’s Ministry of Natural Resources defines high-purity quartz ore by the product it can yield after beneficiation and purification: quartz sand with at least 99.995% SiO₂, or 4N5, alongside appropriate impurity, inclusion, and grain-size characteristics. The definition is about more than the headline silica percentage. China Geological Survey’s reproduction of the ministry’s Q&A says national teams have produced pilot material at 4N5 or higher, with some samples reaching 4N8.

For comparison, USGS reports that high-purity quartz generally has less than 100 parts per million total impurities, equivalent to at least 99.99% silica; ultra-high-purity material can have 10 ppm or less. Its 2026 summary describes high-purity quartz from Spruce Pine, North Carolina, as greater than 99.999% pure. Why high-purity quartz matters to solar and semiconductors
High-purity quartz is used to make crucibles that hold molten silicon as it is grown into monocrystalline ingots. Those ingots are processed into wafers for solar cells and semiconductor devices. The OECD’s supply-chain guidance describes this connection between quartz crucibles, silicon ingots, and wafer production. High-purity quartz’s resistance to heat and chemicals, low thermal expansion, electrical insulation, and light transmission also make it useful in optics and other high-tech applications, as the ministry notes.

USGS also says synthetic high-purity silica can serve some end uses. That means natural quartz is not the only possible input in every application, but the sources do not establish that synthetic material can replace it across the relevant uses.
Does the discovery end China’s reliance on U.S. supply?
No such conclusion is established by the announced reserves or pilot results. China Geological Survey describes the country as highly dependent on imports, while OECD describes global high-purity quartz supply as concentrated and notes Chinese reliance on U.S. imports for domestic crucible production. The findings indicate potential to reduce exposure over time; they do not demonstrate that imports or U.S. sourcing have stopped.

Moving from an identified resource to dependable supply involves more than proving a high SiO₂ percentage. The relevant milestones include:
- Recoverable yield: how much suitable material can be extracted and processed from the deposit.
- Repeatable purification: whether processing can reliably achieve the required impurity, inclusion, and grain-size specifications at production scale.
- Capacity and qualification: whether producers can sustain output and meet customer requirements for crucibles and other applications.
- Supply-chain readiness: the time and investment needed for mining, processing, infrastructure, and commercial shipments.
- Import data: evidence over a defined period showing whether import volumes or U.S. sourcing have actually declined.
OECD reports a historical average of 16 years to bring greenfield mines online. That is broad historical context, not a timetable for the Henan and Xinjiang deposits: project schedules depend on geology, permitting, infrastructure, processing, and investment. OECD guidance, 2026

What the newer Xizang result adds
A separate report on the Dinggye area of Xizang says a research team purified two sample types to 99.9969% and 99.9959% SiO₂. This supports the picture of ongoing exploration and test work in China, but it concerns a separate area and does not show that the Henan and Xinjiang reserves are producing commercially. Is the €1.4 billion valuation reliable?
The Daily Galaxy headline uses a €1.4 billion figure, but the reviewed article does not provide a transparent calculation, price basis, recoverable yield, or official valuation. The figure should therefore be treated as unverified, not as an established value of the reserves. A reserve tonnage alone cannot determine economic value without those details.
