The 2024 headline most likely refers to the Wangu gold field in Pingjiang County, Hunan Province. The Hunan Geological Bureau estimated more than 1,000 tonnes of gold within 3,000 meters of depth, and a Xinhua report gave the estimate an in-ground value of 600 billion yuan (about US$83 billion). Those figures do not show that the gold can all be mined or sold for that amount. The report also does not establish that the deposit is easy to mine.
Where is the Wangu gold field?
Wangu is in Pingjiang County, Hunan Province, China. In November 2024, a government-hosted Xinhua report said the Hunan Geological Bureau had identified more than 40 gold-bearing veins in the area. The report attributed the estimates to the bureau; it did not publish a complete technical report.
How much gold was estimated?
The reported amount depends on the depth scope. The Hunan Geological Bureau estimate, as relayed by Xinhua in 2024, put 300 tonnes of gold within 2,000 meters beneath the Wangu field and more than 1,000 tonnes within 3,000 meters. The larger figure is therefore an estimate extending deeper underground, not a statement that more than 1,000 tonnes have already been extracted or proven economically recoverable.
The Xinhua report quoted ore-prospecting expert Chen Rulin saying, “Many drilled rock cores showed visible gold.” That observation is evidence reported from exploration, but it does not by itself establish the size of an economically mineable reserve.

Is the $83 billion figure real?
The 600 billion yuan figure—approximately US$83 billion—is the in-ground value stated in the 2024 Xinhua report. It is not an estimate of revenue, profit, or cash available to an investor. The report does not show that all the estimated gold could be extracted, processed, recovered, and sold at that gross value.
The public report does not provide the resource classification or the assumptions behind the valuation. It also does not include recovery tests, mine design, cost estimates, or permitting status. Without those details, the headline value cannot answer what a mine would earn or whether developing the deposit would be commercially viable.

Is the new Chinese gold deposit easy to mine?
The available Wangu report does not support calling it easy to mine. It describes an estimate reaching 3,000 meters in depth and mentions exploration technology, including 3D geological modeling. Those details concern exploration; they are not a mining plan or evidence of straightforward extraction.
The report gives no operational basis for judging mining difficulty: it does not state a recovery rate, production schedule, mine-development cost, or other details needed to assess extraction. Liu Yongjun, a vice head of the Hunan Geological Bureau, said new prospecting technologies such as 3D geological modeling had been used at Wangu. That statement describes how the area was explored, not how easily gold could be produced.

Is Wangu the same as the 1,444-tonne Liaoning discovery?
No. Wangu in Hunan was the subject of a November 2024 report; Dadonggou in Liaoning was a separate discovery reported in November 2025. The China Geological Survey, relaying a Ministry of Natural Resources announcement, reported 1,444.49 tonnes of contained gold at Dadonggou, with an average grade of 0.56 grams per tonne. The report described it as low-grade and said an economic assessment for development had passed.

The two announcements use different scopes and do not establish that the reported tonnages are directly comparable under the same technical categories. Dadonggou’s reported economic assessment is not evidence about Wangu’s mining prospects.
