What Centrus Energy’s $4.5 Billion Backlog Means for Revenue and Earnings

Centrus Energy’s $4.5 billion backlog is a long-term pipeline, not earned revenue or guaranteed profit. Its conversion depends on deliveries, milestones, funding, contract terms, and execution.

Centrus Energy reported $4.5 billion of backlog as of June 30, 2026, but that is a measure of potential future work and deliveries—not revenue already earned, cash on hand, or guaranteed profit. The company expects to recognize backlog as it performs services or delivers uranium and separative work units (SWU). When, and how profitably, that happens depends on delivery schedules, production milestones, contract terms, government funding, and execution.

What Centrus means by backlog

Backlog is the company’s estimate of revenue associated with work it expects to perform or fuel it expects to deliver in the future. It is a forward-looking business measure, not a figure in the income statement for the period in which it is reported. Centrus said its total backlog was $4.5 billion at June 30, 2026, compared with $3.8 billion at December 31, 2025. The reported balance extends to 2040 overall.

Those figures describe expected revenue across contracts and commitments over many years. They do not mean Centrus will receive $4.5 billion in the next year, nor do they specify a quarter-by-quarter revenue schedule. They also cannot be added directly to cash, earnings, or the company’s annual revenue guidance: each is a different measure with a different meaning.

The backlog has two segments with different work, contract structures, time horizons, and risks. Centrus reported approximately $3.7 billion in its LEU segment and $0.8 billion in Technical Solutions. LEU stands for low-enriched uranium. SWU, or separative work unit, is a measure of the effort used to increase the concentration of the uranium-235 isotope in uranium fuel.

How the two segments differ

Segment Backlog at June 30, 2026 What the work involves Horizon and conversion considerations
LEU Approximately $3.7 billion Primarily future SWU and uranium deliveries under medium- and long-term contracts, as well as contingent LEU and HALEU sales commitments. Extends to 2040. Revenue depends on deliveries, contract terms, and, for contingent commitments, milestones tied to planned production capacity.
Technical Solutions Approximately $0.8 billion Technical, manufacturing, engineering, and operations services, including HALEU production under Department of Energy (DOE) contracts. Extends to 2034. The balance includes funded work, work not yet appropriated, and options DOE has not exercised.

The table is useful for understanding why the headline total is not a single pool of equally secure orders. LEU is mainly a future fuel-delivery business, but a large portion of its reported balance is contingent. Technical Solutions includes contracted services and government work, but some of that work depends on appropriations or an option being exercised.

How much of the LEU backlog is firm?

Of the approximately $3.7 billion in LEU backlog, about $3.0 billion consisted of contingent LEU and high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) sales contracts and commitments. Centrus said $2.4 billion of those contingent commitments were under definitive agreements. The $2.4 billion is part of—not additional to—the roughly $3.0 billion contingent amount.

A definitive agreement is a more specific contractual commitment than an expression of interest, but that label does not turn the entire amount into revenue that is already earned or certain to be delivered. Centrus said the contingent commitments tend to depend on operational milestones and support potential construction of LEU and HALEU production capacity at its Piketon, Ohio, facility. A commitment dependent on a production milestone can be commercially meaningful while still requiring the company to achieve the conditions needed for delivery.

The LEU balance also included approximately $0.1 billion of deferred revenue and customer advances at June 30, 2026. That accounting category is not the same as a future, unpaid order: deferred revenue generally reflects amounts associated with performance that has not yet been completed, and customer advances can involve cash received before delivery. Its inclusion is another reason not to read backlog as a simple tally of future cash receipts.

Why Technical Solutions backlog needs a funding check

Centrus divides Technical Solutions work among funded work (authorized and appropriated by the customer), unfunded work (not appropriated), and unexercised contract options. Those categories matter because a contract ceiling or option is not the same as currently funded work that the customer has authorized the company to perform.

In its August 2026 filing, Centrus said the proposed DOE budget for fiscal year 2027 did not include further funding to operate the HALEU cascade under the HALEU Operation Contract. That contract was associated with approximately $0.8 billion of Technical Solutions backlog. The filing also said DOE had communicated that it did not then intend to exercise further options under that contract. This is a funding and option-status warning about work associated with the contract; it does not establish that the entire Technical Solutions backlog is lost.

Separately, Centrus disclosed a new $900 million HALEU production task order signed with DOE on July 1, 2026, and up to $170 million in options that DOE may exercise at its discretion. The company said funding for the expansion was not guaranteed. This task order is distinct from the HALEU Operation Contract funding issue. Its headline value should therefore not be treated as an amount that is already funded, earned, or assured as revenue.

When backlog becomes revenue

Centrus says it recognizes backlog as revenue in future periods as it performs work or makes SWU and uranium deliveries. For LEU customers, contracts generally include annual purchase commitments across multi-year terms rather than fixed quarterly commitments. That structure can make revenue lumpy: a customer may take deliveries at different points during the year, so one quarter’s sales do not reveal the exact cadence of the remaining backlog.

Delivery revenue also reflects the terms of the contract, including pricing set in the market conditions prevailing when the contract was signed. Centrus says quarterly LEU gross profit varies with the mix of contracts. As a result, even when deliveries convert backlog into revenue, the amount of profit on those deliveries can differ from one period to another.

Technical Solutions revenue follows a different path. It depends on work performed, contract economics, and whether the relevant work is funded and authorized. For the HALEU Operation Contract, Centrus records revenue on a cost-plus-incentive-fee basis, including target fees for Phases 2 and 3. The resulting earnings depend on costs incurred, fees, work completed, and the terms and funding of contract phases—not simply on the dollar amount listed in backlog.

Revenue growth does not guarantee earnings growth

Centrus’s second-quarter 2026 results show why backlog and revenue alone cannot answer what the company will earn. Total revenue increased year over year, while GAAP net income declined.

Measure Q2 2026 Q2 2025
Total revenue $176.1 million $154.5 million
GAAP net income $16.8 million $28.9 million
LEU revenue $153.4 million $125.7 million
LEU gross profit $51.6 million $50.7 million
Technical Solutions revenue $22.7 million $28.8 million
Technical Solutions gross profit (loss) $(1.7) million $3.2 million

In that year-over-year comparison, higher total revenue did not translate into higher GAAP net income. LEU revenue rose by $27.7 million, while LEU gross profit increased by only $0.9 million. Technical Solutions revenue fell by $6.1 million, and the segment moved from gross profit to a gross loss. Centrus attributed the Technical Solutions revenue decline primarily to lower revenue from the HALEU Operation Contract. Segment gross profit and company-wide GAAP net income are different measures, but the results illustrate that revenue volume and earnings can move differently.

The longer-term numbers also need their dates and accounting periods kept in view. For full-year 2025, Centrus reported $448.7 million of revenue and $77.8 million of net income. LEU provided $346.2 million of revenue and Technical Solutions $102.5 million. Compared with 2024, LEU revenue fell $3.7 million as uranium revenue declined while SWU revenue increased; Technical Solutions revenue rose $10.4 million, primarily because of HALEU Operation Contract revenue. These are historical annual results, not a direct conversion rate for the backlog reported in June 2026.

What the 2026 revenue outlook does—and does not—say

In its August 2026 release, Centrus gave full-year 2026 total revenue guidance of $450 million to $500 million. That is management guidance for revenue, not a guarantee that any particular portion of the $4.5 billion backlog will convert during 2026. It is also not guidance for net income: the release’s revenue range does not, by itself, establish how much profit the company will earn.

It would be misleading to divide the backlog by a year of revenue guidance and treat the result as a firm number of years of revenue. Backlog extends through 2040 overall, includes contingent and potentially unfunded or optional amounts, and converts according to contract schedules and conditions. Guidance is for a particular fiscal year; backlog is an aggregate of expected revenue over multiple future periods.

What can delay, reduce, or prevent conversion

Centrus warns in its filing that projected revenue may not be realized, and that revenue which is realized may not produce profits. The company’s disclosures identify several factors that can affect timing, the amount ultimately recognized, or the cost of doing the work:

  • Operational milestones: Some contingent LEU and HALEU commitments depend on milestones associated with planned production capacity.
  • Government appropriations and authorization: Unfunded Technical Solutions work requires funding; an amount in backlog does not itself appropriate money.
  • Options: A customer may choose not to exercise an option. Centrus’s August filing described DOE’s stated position on further options under the HALEU Operation Contract.
  • Delivery and order timing: Customer orders and annual delivery schedules can move revenue between quarters.
  • Contract economics and execution: Costs, fees, fuel and contract mix, and the work actually performed affect gross profit and earnings.
  • External and contractual risks: Centrus identifies trade laws, restrictions and sanctions, supplier exposure, and contract termination or non-exercise of options among the risks to its business.

These are not interchangeable risks. A delayed delivery can shift the quarter in which revenue appears; a funding shortfall can hold back work; a milestone that is not achieved can affect a contingent sale; and costs or contract mix can affect profitability even after revenue is recognized. The reported backlog does not assign a probability-weighted value or expected margin to each component, so it cannot show precisely how much of the headline total will convert or when.

How to read the backlog as an investor

For an investor, the most useful reading is not “Centrus has $4.5 billion of earnings coming.” It is that the company reports a substantial, long-dated pipeline of potential revenue whose quality varies by segment and commitment status. The LEU figure is linked to deliveries and includes a large contingent portion; Technical Solutions includes government work with distinct funding and option considerations. Neither segment’s backlog amount alone establishes future gross profit or net income.

When evaluating future results, keep the measures separate: backlog indicates expected future business; recognized revenue records deliveries and work performed; gross profit reflects the direct economics of those activities; and GAAP net income reflects the company’s overall results for a reporting period. Centrus’s Q2 2026 figures demonstrate that these measures need not rise together.

The filing’s June 30, 2026 backlog snapshot and its August 2026 funding disclosures should be read with their dates attached. Government budget proposals and contract status can change, so the figures and statements here describe what Centrus reported in those materials, not a claim about subsequent appropriations or later company updates.
