Compare those details against your needs and insurance—not just the advertised visit price.
Start with the care you need and the format the service offers
“Online medical care” can describe several different ways to interact with a clinician. A telehealth service may use a live video appointment, a phone call, secure messaging, or asynchronous communication in which information is sent for later review. These formats are not interchangeable, and a service’s clinical scope can differ from another’s.

Before signing up, find out whether you will speak directly with a clinician, submit a questionnaire for review, exchange messages, or use a combination of these. Ask which conditions or services the platform handles and when it may direct you to in-person care. Do not assume that a service can assess every concern just because it offers medical care online.
- Live video or audio: Ask how appointments are scheduled and whether the clinician interaction is live.
- Messaging or asynchronous review: Ask what information you submit, who reviews it, and how you will receive a response.
- Scope and escalation: Ask which concerns the service can assess and what it recommends if online care is not sufficient.
Clarify what “available” means for the format you choose. A service that accepts information for later review is different from one that schedules a live appointment, and a messaging option may not mean that a clinician is continuously available. Ask when and how you should expect a response, and whether you can ask a follow-up question after receiving it.

HHS describes telehealth as care delivered through different interaction models; it does not establish a universal service scope or follow-up arrangement. Those details belong to each provider’s current terms and should be confirmed directly.
Check that a clinician can treat you in your location
For online care, your location at the time of the appointment matters. The ability to provide care across state lines varies with state regulations, so do not infer eligibility from a service’s nationwide advertising or from where its business is based. Confirm that the clinician is authorized to treat someone located in the state where you will be during care.
Ask who will provide the service, what their professional role is, and whether they can see patients in your state. Rules and available authorization pathways vary; HHS identifies full licensure, temporary practice laws, reciprocity, interstate compacts, and telehealth registration as possible approaches. No single pathway applies everywhere.
If you expect to be traveling, ask about that situation before booking. A service’s ability to treat you in one state does not establish that it can treat you in another. Confirm the answer for the clinician and location relevant to your appointment. If your location changes before the visit, contact the service rather than assuming the original eligibility answer still applies.
Check eligibility for the actual service and clinician you intend to use, not just the company in general. If the service cannot clearly answer who will provide care or whether that person may treat you where you will be, resolve that question before entering health information or paying.
Calculate the likely total cost, not just the advertised visit fee
HHS says the cost of a telehealth appointment depends on insurance status and coverage. The amount shown on a signup page may not tell you whether there is a recurring membership fee, whether follow-up care costs extra, or whether separate services are billed outside the visit. Ask the provider and your insurer about the expected cost before booking, and check the current terms for fees that continue after the initial appointment.

| Cost item | What to verify before booking | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Initial visit | Is the displayed charge per visit, and does it apply to the specific clinician and service you intend to use? | A headline price alone does not establish your cost under insurance or cover other services. |
| Membership or recurring fee | Is there a fee beyond the visit charge? If so, how often is it billed and what does it cover? | A recurring charge can make the total cost different from a one-time appointment price. |
| Follow-up | Are messages, another appointment, or follow-up review included or charged separately? | The cost of the first interaction may not represent the cost of continuing care. |
| Labs, prescriptions, or other services | Are these part of the quoted service, or would they involve separate charges? | Do not assume an online visit price includes services beyond the visit itself. |
| Insurance coverage | Does your insurer cover this exact service and provider, and what cost-sharing applies? | Coverage depends on your plan and the service; confirm rather than relying on a general statement about insurance. |
When you contact the provider, ask for the current fee terms and whether charges recur. When you contact your insurer, describe the exact service and provider and ask what your plan covers. Keep the answers with your booking information so you can compare offers on the same basis.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use the same assumptions when comparing two services. For each one, note the visit charge, any recurring payment, what follow-up includes, and whether labs, prescriptions, or other services could be billed separately. A lower introductory price may not represent the total amount you would pay if you need continued contact or another service.
Ask whether a quoted price is the amount you pay directly or an estimate that depends on insurance processing. The key is to verify the current terms with the provider and the coverage details with your insurer before booking; do not treat a general statement about accepted insurance as a guarantee of your final cost. If you cannot get a clear answer about a fee, treat that as an unresolved item in your comparison.
If you plan to use insurance, verify the network and your plan’s cost-sharing
A service’s statement that it accepts insurance does not by itself establish that a particular clinician is in network for your exact plan or that your specific appointment is covered. Check both the insurer’s provider directory and the provider’s own billing information. Ask the insurer what cost-sharing applies to that service under your plan.
In-network providers usually cost less, but the amount you owe depends on your plan and the service. Confirm the details with the insurer and provider before booking; do not treat a general network statement as a guarantee of a particular bill. If you are comparing an insurance-billed appointment with a direct-pay option, ask each provider what the quoted amount includes and whether additional fees may apply.

Read the privacy and data disclosures before creating an account
Before entering health details or payment information, find out what the service collects, how it uses that information, and with whom it shares it. Review its privacy terms and ask how you can request access to or deletion of information where those options are available. Also look for an explanation of how accounts and communications are protected.
Do not assume that every online health company has the same legal obligations. HIPAA applies to covered providers and health plans; some state laws may also cover businesses outside HIPAA. A service’s role and the rules that apply to it matter, so a general claim that a company is “private” is not a substitute for reading its disclosures.
- Identify the categories of health and account information the service collects.
- Check how it says information is used and shared, including whether advertising or analytics partners are involved.
- Look for instructions on requesting access to or deletion of information, where available.
- Review the service’s stated protections for accounts and communications.
Read the privacy disclosures before the signup flow prompts you to share sensitive details. Pay attention to how the service describes sharing, not only to whether it says it protects information. If you cannot tell what information is collected or how it may be used, contact the service for clarification and decide whether you are comfortable proceeding.
For the visit itself, HHS recommends choosing a private location, limiting what nearby people or devices can hear, and considering encryption on the device and communication apps you use. These steps help protect the conversation in your surroundings; they do not replace reviewing the service’s data practices.
Check that the service is identifiable and reachable
Before sharing personal or financial information with an unfamiliar online health seller, look for a physical address and phone number, and consider whether you can identify who provides care and how to contact the company. The FTC advises researching unfamiliar sellers and checking their contact information. A secure-looking website address alone does not prove that a service is legitimate.
Look for a clear route to resolve billing questions, request records, raise a complaint, or contact support. If you cannot tell who is responsible for care or how to reach the service, resolve that uncertainty before paying or submitting sensitive information. A polished signup flow is not evidence that the service offers accessible support.

Try to identify separate contact routes for care questions and account or billing issues if the service provides them. You should be able to tell where to ask about a charge, how to request records, and how to raise a concern. Research an unfamiliar seller before sharing personal or financial details, and do not rely on a secure-looking URL as your only legitimacy check.
Plan for records, follow-up, and care beyond the first visit
Before you book, find out how you can contact the service after an appointment, obtain your records, receive referrals, and get information about test follow-up. Ask what happens if the clinician determines that online care is not enough. The answers are service-specific: federal guidance describes telehealth interaction models but does not provide one universal follow-up process for every provider.
Include these questions in your comparison:
- How do I contact the service after the appointment, and is that contact included or separately charged?
- How do I request or receive my visit records?
- Who will follow up on tests or referrals, and how will I hear from them?
- What is the next step if the service cannot address my concern online?
Do not assume that a completed online visit automatically explains who is responsible for the next step. Ask how the service handles the particular follow-up you may need, how to reach it afterward, and whether those contacts are included in the price. If the service refers you elsewhere or cannot address the concern online, find out how it communicates that transition.
HHS’s patient resources include the practical question, “How do I schedule a telehealth appointment?” The service should make its own scheduling process clear: how you book, what information you need, and how you will know whether the appointment is confirmed. Check those details before entering payment information or relying on a visit being available at a particular time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a side-by-side checklist before you choose
Compare actual terms for the specific service and plan you expect to use. If an answer is missing, ask the provider or insurer rather than filling in the gap with an assumption. A useful comparison records both the answer and who confirmed it, so you can distinguish current information from an unanswered question or a general website claim.

| Compare | Question to ask | Decision it informs |
|---|---|---|
| Care format and scope | Is care by video, phone, messaging, or questionnaire plus later review? What can it assess, and when is in-person care needed? | Whether the format and service scope fit what you are seeking. |
| Clinician eligibility | Who provides care, what is their professional role, and can they treat someone located in your state? | Whether the appointment can be provided to you where you will be. |
| Total cost | What is the visit charge? Are there recurring fees or separate charges for follow-up, labs, prescriptions, or other services? | What you may pay beyond an advertised initial price. |
| Insurance and network | Does your exact plan cover this provider and service, and what cost-sharing applies? | Whether your plan’s coverage and expected out-of-pocket cost meet your needs. |
| Privacy and data use | What information is collected, how is it used or shared, and how can you request access or deletion where available? | Whether the service’s disclosures are acceptable to you. |
| Trust and support | Can you identify the provider and reach the company about care, billing, records, or complaints? | Whether there is a clear path to get help before and after paying. |
| Continuity | How are follow-up, referrals, tests, and records handled? What happens if online care is insufficient? | Whether you understand the next steps after the initial interaction. |
Use the checklist to make a decision based on fit rather than on a single feature. A convenient format does not answer questions about location eligibility, coverage, privacy, or follow-up. Likewise, a favorable price does not establish that the service can provide the interaction or scope you want.

Keep the comparison grounded in current service terms. Availability, costs, insurance coverage, clinical scope, and data practices can depend on your location, plan, and the provider’s current policies. A comparison checklist can surface the right questions, but it cannot establish that a particular service is best, cheapest, covered, or available for every reader.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I pay for telehealth?
Ask the provider for the current visit fee and whether there are recurring membership charges or separate costs for follow-up, labs, prescriptions, or other services. If you plan to use insurance, ask your insurer whether it covers the exact provider and service and what cost-sharing applies. The amount you pay depends on your insurance status and coverage.
How do I schedule a telehealth appointment?
Check the service’s booking instructions, what information it requires, how you select an appointment format, and how it confirms the appointment. If you expect to be traveling, confirm that the clinician can treat you in the state where you will be during care.
Does every online health service have the same privacy obligations?
No. HIPAA applies to covered providers and health plans, and some state laws may cover businesses outside HIPAA. Read the service’s disclosures to understand what it collects, how it uses or shares information, and how to request access or deletion where available.
How can I check whether an unfamiliar online health service is legitimate?
Research the seller and look for a physical address, phone number, an identifiable care provider, and clear contact routes for billing, records, complaints, and support. A secure-looking website address alone does not prove that the service is legitimate.
What should I ask about after-visit follow-up?
Ask how to contact the service, obtain records, receive referrals, and get test follow-up; whether those contacts cost extra; and what happens if online care is not sufficient. Follow-up arrangements are specific to each service.
The Bottom Line
Before signing up, compare the service’s care format and scope, clinician authorization in your location, total fees and insurance terms, privacy disclosures, and follow-up process. Confirm unclear details with the provider or insurer, and do not rely on a headline price or general claim to answer questions that depend on your plan, state, or the service’s current terms.
