Carlisle United’s official accounts commentary said Jarrad Branthwaite’s emerging success was expected to contribute to at least £1.1 million in player income during 2023/24. That is not a confirmed payout from a future Everton sale. A separate Goal report in June 2024 put Carlisle’s reported sell-on clause at 15 per cent of profits, but the club’s accounts do not confirm that percentage or the contract’s calculation terms.
What did Carlisle United’s chief say?
In commentary published with Carlisle United’s accounts in March 2024, chief executive Nigel Clibbens said: “Finally, transfers of James Trafford and Dean Henderson in the Summer 2023 window and emerging success of Jarrad Branthwaite will result in significant Player income in 23/24 of at least £1.1m.” Carlisle United’s accounts commentary concerns accounts for the year ended 30 June 2023 and anticipated income for 2023/24.
The statement is about expected player income from several sources, not a disclosed Branthwaite-only sum. Carlisle also said that cash from player income would come in over a longer period and that possible sell-on income remained uncertain at the accounts date. It therefore does not establish that the club had received a particular payment from Everton or that any future sale would trigger one.
How much could Carlisle get if Everton sell Branthwaite?
Goal reported in June 2024 that Branthwaite had moved from Carlisle to Everton for £1 million and that Carlisle’s reported clause entitled it to 15 per cent of profits on a future sale. Those are reported terms, not details confirmed in Carlisle’s accounts. The accounts and Goal report do not establish a definitive percentage or explain the precise calculation base beyond Goal’s description of “profits.”

That distinction matters: 15 per cent of a club’s profit on a transfer would not mean 15 per cent of the eventual sale price. Without verified contract terms and the relevant figures, there is no sound basis for calculating a payment. Goal’s report also described transfer interest and valuation context at the time; those details are historical, not evidence of a completed sale or current valuation.

The sources differ in what they establish. Carlisle’s March 2024 accounts commentary is an official club statement about anticipated and uncertain player income. What Premier League rules say about sell-on rights
The Premier League’s 2026–27 rules say a club with a sell-on right is to receive full details of compensation fees and contingent sums to which the transferor club becomes entitled. This describes a disclosure procedure; it does not verify Carlisle’s agreement with Everton, its percentage or any payment due.
