Before buying Blackburn Rovers in 2010, Venky’s was best known for poultry. The name was associated with India’s Venkateshwara Hatcheries Group, founded in 1971, whose core business covered hatcheries, breeding, eggs, chicken processing and related poultry operations. Contemporary reporting also associated the group with healthcare and pet foods.
Venky’s was a poultry group, not a football business
Venky’s was the public-facing name associated with the Venkateshwara Hatcheries Group (VH Group), an Indian business founded by B.V. Rao in Pune in 1971. The group’s own profile describes its growth from hatcheries into poultry and allied sectors. VH Group profile
Its business can be understood as a poultry value chain: breeding and hatcheries supplied birds and eggs; production and processing handled poultry products; and feed, health and diagnostics supported those operations.
Breeding, hatcheries and genetics
The group profile lists broiler and layer breeding, hatcheries, specific-pathogen-free (SPF) eggs and genetic research. These activities sit near the start of poultry production, supplying and developing birds and eggs for the industry.

Chicken, eggs and processing
VH Group’s listed operations include chicken and egg processing. The company’s core therefore extended beyond breeding into the handling and processing of poultry products.
Feed, health and diagnostics
The profile also names poultry feed and equipment, feed supplements, vaccines, poultry disease diagnostics, biosecurity products and nutritional health products. It lists soya bean extract as well. These are related lines serving poultry production and animal health rather than evidence of unrelated businesses.

What else was reported around the 2010 takeover?
A Guardian report published on 26 October 2010 described Venky’s as an Indian poultry and pharmaceutical company and said the group had expanded into healthcare and pet foods. The report also called Venky’s a preferred supplier to McDonald’s and KFC in India; that description is attributable to the Guardian report. The Guardian, 26 October 2010
The VH Group’s current profile gives a broad account of its activities, but it is not a dated inventory of all operations at the time of the takeover. It is safest to describe poultry as the established center of the group and healthcare and pet foods as areas contemporary reporting associated with it, rather than assume every item on today’s profile existed before 2010.

Who led the group and why buy Blackburn?
VH Group biographies identify Anuradha J. Desai as chairperson, B. Venkatesh Rao as group joint managing director, and B. Balaji Rao as a whole-time director of VH Group and managing director of Venky’s (India) Ltd. In takeover coverage, Desai publicly explained the acquisition’s image-building rationale.
At completion, Desai said: “We plan to focus on leveraging the global influence in establishing Blackburn Rovers as a truly global brand.” The completion report also quoted her saying, “We will absolutely respect the Jack Walker legacy.” These statements describe the public rationale and assurances; they do not establish that image-building was the group’s only motive. How much did the Blackburn deal cost?
Contemporary coverage used two different figures because it described different stages and measures of the transaction:

The £23 million cash price for the stake and the earlier £46 million debt-inclusive valuation are not necessarily contradictory: they refer to different transaction measures. The October report also cited Venky’s 2009–10 annual report as showing £1 billion turnover and £118 million profit; those figures were reported by the Guardian and the underlying annual report is not independently reviewed here.
