Broadcom is a technology company with two main businesses: semiconductor solutions and infrastructure software. Its chips, modules and systems help power data centers, communications and other equipment; its software helps organizations build, operate and secure enterprise IT environments. VMware is part of the software business.

What does Broadcom make?

Broadcom sells technology largely to businesses and other organizations. Its offerings are often components or platforms used inside larger systems, rather than consumer products that a person buys under the Broadcom name. Broadcom describes its work as providing semiconductors and infrastructure software for organizations’ complex, mission-critical needs in its corporate overview.

The company’s FY2025 Form 10-K, filed December 18, 2025, divides its business into semiconductor solutions and infrastructure software. The two businesses serve different purposes, though both support the technology infrastructure organizations rely on.

Broadcom’s semiconductor business

Broadcom designs, develops and supplies semiconductor and semiconductor-based solutions. The product range described in its FY2025 Form 10-K includes digital and mixed-signal devices, network interface cards, modules, switches, subsystems and, in some cases, racks.

  • 𝐏𝐥𝐮𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲: Easy setup with no software installation or configuration needed.

In practical terms, these products help move, connect, process or store data inside larger equipment and systems. Broadcom sells into multiple layers of the technology stack, so its products may be built into infrastructure rather than marketed directly to consumers.

Where the semiconductors are used

Broadcom reports semiconductor applications across a wide range of markets:

  • Data centers and servers: enterprise and AI data centers, servers, networking equipment and storage systems.
  • Communications and connectivity: telecommunications equipment, wireless devices and base stations, home connectivity, set-top boxes and broadband access.
  • Industrial and other systems: factory automation, power generation, alternative energy and electronic displays.

Broadcom’s solutions portfolio also groups its markets and offerings across categories that include networking, wireless, broadband, storage and industrial systems. The company’s portfolio is not limited to one type of chip or one end market.

Broadcom’s infrastructure-software business

Broadcom’s other business sells software used to build, manage and secure enterprise IT environments. In the FY2025 filing, the company’s infrastructure-software portfolio spans private and hybrid cloud, application development and delivery, software-defined edge, application networking and security, mainframe, distributed and cybersecurity solutions, and Fibre Channel storage area networks (SANs).

That range means Broadcom is not only a chipmaker: its software supports both newer cloud environments and established enterprise systems. VMware is a prominent part of this business.

VMware Cloud Foundation as a private-cloud example

VMware Cloud Foundation illustrates the private-cloud portion of the portfolio. In May 2026, Broadcom announced version 9.1 as a private-cloud platform for production AI workloads. Those capabilities are Broadcom’s product description, not an independent assessment of performance.

In a separate May 19, 2026 announcement about a renewed partnership with LSEG, Broadcom said the rollout would center on VMware Cloud Foundation and that Broadcom would provide professional services. This is one example of how the company’s software may be deployed with services in an organization’s technology environment; it does not establish that the same arrangement applies to every customer.

How the two businesses differ

The simplest distinction is what Broadcom delivers and what customer problem it addresses:

Business What it delivers Problems it addresses Typical settings
Semiconductor solutions Devices, modules, network interface cards, switches, subsystems and some systems Connectivity, data movement, processing and storage, plus industrial applications Data centers, servers, communications equipment, consumer-connectivity infrastructure and industrial systems
Infrastructure software Enterprise software platforms and solutions Building, operating, managing and securing IT environments Private and hybrid cloud, mainframe and distributed systems, cybersecurity, application delivery and Fibre Channel SAN environments

The categories can meet inside the same broad technology ecosystem—for example, data-center infrastructure depends on both physical networking and software management—but they are distinct businesses with different products and roles.

How Broadcom became a company with two businesses

Broadcom’s corporate history spans more than 60 years, according to its FY2025 Form 10-K. The filing describes a history shaped by origins and acquisitions associated with AT&T/Bell Labs, Lucent, Hewlett-Packard, LSI, Broadcom Corporation, Brocade, CA, Symantec Enterprise Security and VMware.

This is a high-level thread through the company’s history, not a list of current standalone divisions. It helps explain why Broadcom today includes both semiconductor activities and a broad enterprise-software portfolio.
