That name is a retail brand, not a single refinery or oil company. Costco says it buys fuel from major refineries and distributors in each area, and it says its gasoline meets TOP TIER performance standards and contains deposit-control detergent additives. Those are real quality markers, but the evidence available does not show that Costco’s fuel outperforms other fuels that meet the same standard.
What the Kirkland Signature name tells you
Kirkland Signature is the label on Costco’s fuel pumps and in its fuel materials. Costco describes it as its own brand, but it does not say that one refinery or upstream supplier provides fuel to every station. Costco’s official fuel FAQ says the company buys from major refineries and distributors in each area. In practice, two Costco stations in different regions may be supplied by different companies, so the brand name alone does not tell you who refined the gasoline in your tank.
Why Costco calls its gasoline high-quality
Costco’s case for quality rests on three claims. Each is the company’s own description, and each can be checked in part.
TOP TIER certification
Costco’s official fuel FAQ states: “Our fuels have been certified to meet the TOP TIER™ performance standards.” TOP TIER is a voluntary gasoline standard that requires a higher level of detergent additive than the minimum set by the EPA. Certification is a claim about the fuel’s formula, so it applies to the Kirkland Signature product as Costco describes it. The FAQ carries no publication date. If you want to confirm the current status yourself, check the TOP TIER licensed-retailer directory rather than relying on the FAQ alone.

Deposit-control detergent
Costco states that Kirkland Signature gasoline contains five times the EPA detergent requirement in both regular and premium grades. This is Costco’s own figure, published on its fuel pages without a publication date. It is not an EPA finding or endorsement. The detergent’s job is to keep deposits from building up in fuel injectors and intake valves, which is why Costco links it to engine protection and fuel economy on its product page.
Station filtration and tank monitoring
Costco’s FAQ also describes filtering fuel and monitoring and inspecting its storage tanks to guard against contamination. This matters because a clean formula can still perform poorly if water or debris reaches the pump. The description is a company practice, not an independent audit of each station’s tanks and equipment.

What the evidence does not establish
- Superiority over other TOP TIER fuels. Certification means a fuel meets a shared performance standard. It does not rank one certified fuel above another. No independent, dated comparison establishes that Costco’s gasoline performs better than other certified brands.
- Identical conditions at every station. Costco describes its maintenance practices, but no third-party inspection of every location has been published.
- Specific results for your car. Costco’s product page describes performance, fuel-economy, emissions, and engine-protection benefits from cleaning deposits. Those are product claims, not guarantees. Switching fuel will not reliably raise your mileage or repair an engine.
- Five times means five times cleaner or better. The “five times” figure refers to the detergent requirement. It does not measure how much cleaner the fuel is overall, how much mileage you will gain, or how it compares with rival brands.
Regular or premium: choose by your owner’s manual
Costco’s FAQ says gasoline octane “can vary by state,” and that fuel is “typically 87 octane for Regular and 91 octane for Premium Gasoline.” It advises customers to use the octane rating in the owner’s manual. Octane is the main difference between Costco’s regular and premium unleaded fuels.

The practical money question is simple. Premium costs more per gallon, and a vehicle designed for regular gains nothing from it. Do not assume a higher octane makes a car run better. Buy the grade the manual calls for, and treat the price difference as money you do not need to spend.

How to choose a station for your budget
- Open the owner’s manual and find the required or recommended octane rating.
- Pick the matching grade at each station you consider. Do not compare regular at one station with premium at another.
- Compare the price per gallon for that grade, and check that the station’s fuel is TOP TIER certified if that matters to you.
- Factor in the drive. A slightly cheaper gallon is not a saving if the trip costs more in time or fuel.
Membership and access
Costco describes its fuel stations as open to members, with an exception for customers who buy a prepaid Costco Shop Card. Station rules can differ by location, so check the rules at the station you plan to use before you drive over.

Costco sells Kirkland Signature gasoline, supplied regionally by major refineries and distributors, and it meets TOP TIER standards by Costco’s account. For most drivers the decision comes down to grade and price: buy what your owner’s manual specifies, compare the same grade across stations, and treat the quality claims as credible company statements rather than proof of superiority.
