Re:

What Are Social Security’s Full Retirement Age, Early Claiming Age, and Maximum Claiming Age?

Social Security retirement benefits can generally start at 62. Your full retirement age depends on birth year, and delaying beyond 70 earns no additional delayed retirement credits.

For a worker’s own Social Security retirement benefit, the earliest general claiming age is 62, full retirement age (FRA) depends on birth year and falls between 66 and 67, and age 70 is the latest age at which delaying can earn delayed retirement credits. Claiming early lowers the monthly benefit; waiting beyond FRA raises it only through age 70. Waiting longer to apply does not earn additional credits.

The three ages, at a glance

These ages describe when a worker can start retirement benefits and how the benefit amount is adjusted based on the start date. They do not dictate when a person must stop working. Social Security calls the age benefits begin the retirement age, and notes that it is often different from the age someone leaves a job.

  • Age 62: The earliest general age to claim a worker’s retirement benefit. Starting before FRA reduces the monthly amount.
  • Full retirement age: The birth-year-dependent age at which the worker qualifies for the unreduced primary retirement benefit under the age adjustment rules. It generally ranges from 66 to 67.
  • Age 70: The endpoint for earning delayed retirement credits. Delaying past 70 does not increase the benefit through additional credits.

“Maximum claiming age” is not a separate official eligibility category. It is a useful shorthand for the latest age at which postponing the start of retirement benefits can add delayed credits: 70. A person may apply later, but the credits stop accruing at that age.

What is your full retirement age?

Your FRA is based on your year of birth, so there is no single age that applies to every worker. For U.S. Social Security retirement benefits, the age generally ranges from 66 to 67. The Social Security Administration (SSA) says that the current FRA is 67 for people attaining age 62 in 2026. That is the cohort born in 1964.

To find your own FRA, use the SSA’s retirement-age lookup with your date of birth. A general range or another person’s age is not a substitute for checking your own birth year. FRA matters because the early-claim reduction is measured against it, while delayed retirement credits apply for eligible months after it.

FRA is not the same as Medicare eligibility age. SSA states that Medicare eligibility remains age 65. Someone who delays Social Security should consider Medicare enrollment separately rather than assuming the two programs share an age threshold.

Can you collect Social Security at 62?

Generally, yes: a worker can start retirement benefits as early as age 62. The trade-off is a smaller monthly payment than if the person waits until FRA. The reduction depends on how many months before FRA benefits begin, so the exact percentage depends on birth year and the selected claiming month.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a person whose FRA is 67, SSA says claiming at 62 can mean a benefit up to 30% lower than the FRA amount. That is a comparison with the benefit at FRA, not a universal dollar figure and not a percentage that should be applied to every birth cohort or start month. The closer the start date is to FRA, the fewer early months are involved in the adjustment.

The reduction is part of the benefit calculation and is not automatically erased when the claimant reaches FRA. A later recalculation can occur for other reasons, such as additional earnings affecting the record, but turning FRA does not by itself undo the early-claim adjustment. That distinction is important: claiming at 62 is an election to begin sooner with a lower monthly amount, not a temporary discount that disappears at 67.

How waiting after full retirement age changes the benefit

A worker who delays starting benefits past FRA can earn delayed retirement credits for eligible months of delay, up to age 70. The credits increase the monthly retirement benefit. SSA describes the increase as accruing month by month; federal regulations define the credit in terms of eligible months when no old-age benefit is received.

The credit-earning period ends at 70. There is no additional delayed-credit increase for waiting beyond that age, even if a person does not apply until later. Therefore, the relevant choice is not simply “claim now or wait as long as possible.” For the delayed-credit rules, the useful comparison is between starting at FRA, delaying for some or all of the period through 70, and the person’s own circumstances.

The ages 62, FRA, and 70 describe benefit start timing, not a requirement to retire from work. Someone may stop working before benefits begin, begin benefits while continuing to work, or work after FRA. The benefit age decision and the employment decision are related for some people but are not the same decision.

SSA summarizes the limit this way: “There is no additional benefit increase after you reach age 70, even if you continue to delay starting benefits.” So age 70 is a limit on earning additional credits, not a deadline to file. Applying later does not create a larger delayed-credit adjustment.

What the 2026 maximum-benefit examples do—and do not—show

SSA’s 2026 examples illustrate how the start age can change a benefit for a worker with a particular earnings record. The agency assumes a worker earned the taxable maximum in every year beginning at age 22 and started benefits in 2026. The figures below are examples under that assumption, not typical benefits or guaranteed amounts for a particular person.

Start age in SSA’s 2026 example Example monthly benefit
62 $2,969
Full retirement age $4,152
70 $5,181

Those numbers should not be treated as a menu of amounts available to every retiree. A person’s benefit depends on their own earnings record and claiming age; a different earnings history can produce a substantially different estimate. The figures also concern benefits started in 2026 and can change as annual benefit amounts and limits change.

There is no universal maximum monthly retirement benefit that can be inferred from the age rules alone. The SSA figures above are conditional examples based on earning the taxable maximum throughout the stated working history. To compare your own choices, rely on your personal SSA estimates rather than using these examples as a forecast.

SSA’s January 2, 2026 FAQ reports these amounts for that specific high-earning example: $2,969 at 62, $4,152 at FRA, and $5,181 at 70. They illustrate the difference between start ages under the stated assumption; they do not establish what a person with a different earnings record will receive.

How to compare claiming ages for your situation

There is no single best start age for everyone. Compare the monthly amounts and the timing using your own FRA and earnings record, then weigh the circumstances that matter to you. The purpose of the comparison is to see the concrete trade-off, not to assume that the earliest or latest age is automatically right.

  1. Confirm your FRA. Enter your date of birth in SSA’s retirement-age lookup. This establishes the age against which an early claim is reduced and after which delayed credits may accrue.
  2. Compare personal estimates at different start ages. Use SSA’s benefit tools to view your own estimate and claim-age scenarios. The 2026 maximum examples above are not a replacement for a personalized estimate.
  3. Check the monthly adjustment and start date together. Claiming before FRA reduces the monthly benefit; delaying beyond FRA can raise it through age 70. Compare the monthly amounts with the period during which you would receive benefits under each scenario.
  4. Review your earnings history. Social Security bases retirement benefits on the highest 35 years of earnings. Years with no earnings can count as zeros, and later higher earnings may replace lower years in the calculation. Continued work can therefore affect the earnings record as well as the date benefits begin.
  5. Consider the personal factors SSA identifies as relevant. The decision is individual. Your work plans, income needs, and other circumstances may shape which start date makes sense; the age rules alone do not establish a universally preferable choice.

When reviewing estimates, make sure each number corresponds to the start age you are considering and the earnings assumptions in your record. A comparison is only useful if the ages, earnings history, and dates are aligned. If you are deciding whether to claim before FRA, also recognize that the age adjustment does not automatically vanish at FRA.

It can help to write down the estimates for the ages you are actually considering rather than comparing an estimate at 62 with one at 70 by assumption. Include your FRA as a reference point, and check whether any estimate assumes that you keep working or stop earning. SSA’s online planning tools can provide estimates and claim-age scenarios; the personal record, rather than the maximum-benefit example, is the relevant starting point for a household decision.

Keep retirement benefits separate from other Social Security and Medicare rules

The age rules in this article are for a worker’s own Social Security retirement benefit. They should not automatically be applied to survivor benefits, which can have different full retirement age rules, or to spouse benefits, which have separate rules. A person evaluating one of those benefit types should check the relevant SSA guidance rather than treating the worker-retirement schedule as interchangeable.

Likewise, Social Security FRA and Medicare eligibility answer different questions. FRA is used in calculating a worker’s retirement benefit based on when it starts; Medicare eligibility remains age 65 according to SSA’s 2026 FAQ. Delaying retirement benefits does not make Medicare enrollment questions disappear, so plan for the programs separately.

Are the ages changing?

For the current rules described here, age 62 remains the earliest general claiming age for worker retirement benefits, FRA remains determined by birth year, and 70 remains the endpoint for earning delayed retirement credits. Proposals or long-range solvency scenarios are not themselves changes to current claiming rules. Do not treat a proposed policy scenario as an enacted change to the age schedule.

Frequently asked questions

What is my full retirement age?

It depends on your birth year. For worker retirement benefits, FRA generally falls between 66 and 67. Use SSA’s retirement-age lookup with your date of birth for the age that applies to you. SSA’s January 2, 2026 FAQ says FRA is 67 for people attaining age 62 in 2026, the cohort born in 1964.

How much do I lose if I claim Social Security at 62?

The reduction depends on your FRA and the month you start. For people with an FRA of 67, SSA says a claim at 62 can be up to 30% lower than the FRA benefit. It is not a universal dollar reduction, and the adjustment is not automatically removed when you reach FRA.

Does Social Security increase if I wait until 70?

For eligible months after FRA, delayed retirement credits increase the monthly retirement benefit through age 70. The amount depends on the worker’s record and timing. SSA says no additional benefit increase accrues after age 70, even if you continue to delay.

What is the latest age to claim Social Security?

There is no requirement to apply by age 70, but 70 is the latest age at which waiting can earn delayed retirement credits. You may apply later; the delay beyond 70 does not add those credits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is age 70 the age I should claim?

Not necessarily. Age 70 is the delayed-credit endpoint, not a recommendation that fits everyone. Compare your personal SSA estimates and circumstances; claiming at 62 or waiting until 70 is not automatically best for every worker.

No. SSA states that Medicare eligibility remains age 65, while Social Security FRA depends on birth year. Check Medicare enrollment requirements separately if you are delaying retirement benefits.

Do these ages apply to spouse or survivor benefits?

Not necessarily. This explanation covers a worker’s own retirement benefit. Spouse benefits and survivor benefits have separate rules, and survivor benefits can have different FRA rules. Check SSA guidance for the specific benefit type.

The Bottom Line

For a worker’s own retirement benefit, 62 is the earliest general claiming age, FRA depends on birth year, and delayed retirement credits stop accruing at 70. Check your FRA and personal SSA estimates, because the monthly amount depends on your earnings record and start date. Age 70 is not a universal recommendation, and Medicare’s age-65 eligibility is a separate matter.
