What Are KPIs in Marketing? Examples and How to Choose Them

A marketing KPI is a defined measure selected to show progress toward a specific business or campaign objective. The most useful KPI is not simply a number available in a dashboard: it is a measure that helps answer whether the objective is being met and what decision to make next.

What is a marketing KPI?

A key performance indicator (KPI) is a quantifiable measure of progress toward an objective. In marketing, that objective might be revenue, qualified opportunities, registrations, customer retention, or awareness. A metric becomes a KPI because it is prioritized and tied to a goal—not because an ad platform or analytics report happens to display it.

It helps to distinguish three roles:

  • Primary KPI: The main outcome measure used to judge progress toward the objective.
  • Diagnostic metrics: Supporting measures that help explain why the primary KPI changed.
  • Delivery metrics: Measures of whether planned marketing work was carried out.

A campaign measurement framework from the American Advertising and Marketing Association recommends connecting business outcomes to marketing outcomes and the customer behavior expected to contribute to them. It does not prescribe one universal number of KPIs; the practical point is to keep the primary outcome clear while retaining useful supporting measures. Read the campaign measurement framework.

How do I choose marketing KPIs?

Choose the measure by starting with the result the organization needs, then work backward to what marketing can influence and what customer behavior would signal progress.

  1. Name the business outcome. Be specific about the result, such as product sales, qualified leads, registrations, retention, or awareness.
  2. Connect it to a marketing outcome and behavior. Identify the marketing result and the audience action expected to contribute to the business outcome.
  3. Select a primary KPI that represents the goal. Keep other measures in supporting roles unless they are also necessary to judge the objective.
  4. Write down the metric definition. Specify the formula, numerator and denominator, counting rules, period, source system, owner, and update frequency.
  5. Set the baseline, target, and deadline. Use the organization’s starting point, objective, economics, and data quality rather than an unsupported industry average.
  6. Decide what action the result will trigger. Define in advance what counts as success, what prompts optimization, and what calls for reconsidering the plan.
  7. Check measurement limits. Review tracking gaps, consent constraints, attribution rules, and differences between platform and business-system reporting before interpreting a precise-looking figure.

These fields make a KPI useful for a decision rather than merely present in a report. If a number changes but no one knows what to do differently, it may be a useful metric, but it is not serving as an effective indicator for that decision.

What are marketing KPI examples?

The right KPI depends on the intended outcome and campaign stage. The examples below are options, not universal recommendations or performance benchmarks.

Objective or stage Possible KPI What to define
Awareness Brand recall How recall is measured and over what period; a measurement method and target are not prescribed by the cited example.
Consideration Conversion rate on an online form Which interactions qualify as opportunities and what counts as a completed conversion.
Lower-funnel sales Product sales Which sales are included, the reporting period, and the attribution basis.
Lead generation Qualified leads or completed registrations The organization’s definition of “qualified” and the rules for counting a registration.

Amazon Ads uses brand recall for awareness, form conversion rate for consideration, and product sales as a lower-funnel example. These illustrations show why the goal matters; they do not establish target values or make those measures mandatory for every campaign. See Amazon Ads’ KPI definition and examples.

How is conversion rate calculated?

Conversion rate is conversions divided by eligible opportunities, multiplied by 100 when expressed as a percentage. The denominator and counting rules must be stated because different tools may define an eligible opportunity differently.

Google Ads defines conversion rate as conversions divided by ad interactions that can be tracked to a conversion in the same period. Its worked example is 50 conversions from 1,000 trackable ad interactions: 50 ÷ 1,000 = 5%. This is an illustration, not a typical or recommended rate. If multiple conversion actions are tracked, or the “Every” counting setting is selected, one interaction may receive multiple conversion counts and the reported rate can exceed 100%. Google Ads explains its conversion-rate definition.

How are common marketing metrics calculated?

The formulas below are common reference definitions. Before comparing reports, define the scope of cost, eligible opportunities, acquisitions, marketing return, and attribution; platforms and business systems may not count the same things.

Metric Common formula Definition to clarify
CPM Advertising cost ÷ impressions × 1,000 Which advertising costs and impressions are included.
CPC Advertising cost ÷ clicks Cost scope and what the reporting source counts as a click.
CTR Clicks ÷ impressions × 100 Which clicks and impressions are in scope.
CPA Advertising cost ÷ defined acquisitions What qualifies as an acquisition and which costs are included.
Conversion rate Defined conversions ÷ eligible opportunities × 100 What counts in the numerator and denominator, including conversion-counting rules.
ROAS Attributed advertising revenue ÷ advertising cost Attribution method, revenue scope, and advertising-cost scope.
Marketing ROI (Marketing return − marketing investment) ÷ marketing investment × 100 What is counted as return and investment, and over what time horizon.

These reference formulas appear in the AAMA campaign measurement framework. A metric name alone is not a complete definition: for example, “CPA” is difficult to compare if one report counts a lead and another counts a paying customer as an acquisition.

What is the difference between ROAS and marketing ROI?

ROAS is an attributed revenue-to-advertising-cost ratio. It can help describe the revenue credited to advertising under a particular attribution setup, but the ratio by itself does not establish that advertising caused the revenue or generated incremental profit.

For strategic return on marketing investment (ROMI), Dominique M. Hanssens’s July 24, 2024, American Marketing Association article describes a net-contribution approach: take the revenue increase due to marketing, multiply it by gross margin, subtract marketing investment, then divide by marketing investment. In formula form:

Strategic ROMI = [(marketing-driven revenue increase × gross margin) − marketing investment] ÷ marketing investment

This approach makes the causal and financial definitions important: the revenue increase must be estimated as due to marketing, and the calculation needs a defined investment and margin. Hanssens also notes that strategic decisions may require attention to long-term growth and changes in brand or customer-relationship assets that influence longer-term performance. A platform-attributed ROAS figure should not be described as causal lift unless the measurement method estimates incrementality. Read Hanssens’s discussion of using ROMI effectively.

How should you interpret and act on KPI results?

Interpret a KPI against the objective, baseline, deadline, and decision rule defined before launch. A number without that context can be misleading, especially when a platform’s attribution or counting rules differ from the source system used for sales, margin, or customer records.

  • Confirm the definition. Check whether the formula, period, conversion rule, and source match the KPI plan.
  • Check data quality. Look for missing tracking, consent-related limits, delayed updates, or duplicate events before treating a change as real.
  • Use diagnostic metrics to investigate. Supporting measures can help identify where a primary result changed without replacing the main outcome measure.
  • Apply the pre-set decision rule. Optimize, continue, or reassess based on the agreed threshold and the business goal, rather than reacting to a single dashboard movement.
  • Keep attribution claims proportional. Report what the system attributes, and distinguish it from evidence that marketing caused incremental results.

There is no general benchmark in the cited material that establishes an ideal conversion rate, ROAS, or other KPI for every business. Targets should be based on the organization’s baseline, objective, margin economics, time horizon, and measurement quality. Google Ads also emphasizes relating ROI to advertiser goals and using conversion tracking to measure valuable customer activity. See Google Ads’ explanation of ROI.
