Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos have each described or been reported to follow personal routines involving sleep, work, exercise, or decision-making. But the available accounts do not show that any one habit caused their wealth. They are dated, unevenly sourced snapshots—not a proven formula for financial success.
What do their reported routines have in common?
The clearest overlap is that all three have been associated with sleep habits, but the evidence differs in date and strength. Bezos has discussed his own sleep priority and morning schedule in interviews and published writing. Musk’s specific workday details come from a 2007 interview, while his later sleep comment was made in a 2021 interview. Zuckerberg’s exercise and sleep details come from secondary reporting published in 2026.
| Person | What the sources describe | Evidence and date |
|---|---|---|
| Elon Musk | A 2007 workday beginning around 7:30 or 8 a.m. and ending around 8 p.m.; in a 2021 interview, he said sleeping less reduced his productivity. | His schedule is from a 2007 PBS interview; Fortune quoted his 2021 comment in June 2026. |
| Mark Zuckerberg | Regular exercise, including jiujitsu and mixed martial arts, around eight hours of sleep, and use of an Oura ring to track sleep metrics, according to the report. | Secondary reporting by The Economic Times, June 2026. Meta’s 2014 newsroom page records a question about his repeated shirt choice but not his answer. |
| Jeff Bezos | An unhurried morning, a stated priority of eight hours of sleep, demanding meetings before lunch, and a distinction between reversible and hard-to-reverse decisions. | Attributed interviews and Bezos’s published writing reported in 2018 and 2020, with the routine revisited by Fortune in June 2026. |
Elon Musk: an old schedule and a later lesson about sleep
What he said about his workday in 2007
In a 2007 PBS Wired Science interview, Musk said his SpaceX schedule had no fixed hours. He tended to get up around 7:30 or 8 a.m., reach the office around 9 or 9:30, and stay until about 8 p.m. He said SpaceX occupied most of his time then, while he spent a few days each month on Tesla. Those details describe his role and companies in 2007; they should not be read as his current daily timetable.
What he has said about sleep
Fortune’s June 2026 account quotes Musk describing an experiment he discussed in a 2021 Joe Rogan interview: “I tried sleeping less, but then total productivity decreases.” This is his own account of his experience, not a clinical finding or a measurement of how much sleep every person needs.

A 2017 Axios roundup attributes other habits to Musk and earlier interviews or reporting, including roughly 6–6.5 hours of sleep, tightly scheduled meetings, and occasional exercise. The roundup’s claims have uneven sourcing and do not establish a definitive daily routine, so they are less useful than the dated interview and his later sleep comment.
Mark Zuckerberg: exercise and sleep tracking in secondary reporting
Exercise and sleep
A June 2026 Economic Times report, citing earlier interviews and reporting, says Zuckerberg tries to exercise six or seven days a week, practices jiujitsu and mixed martial arts, gets around eight hours of sleep, and uses an Oura ring to follow sleep metrics. These are reported personal practices, not independent evidence that the wearable verifies sleep quality or that exercise or tracking improves business performance.

The story behind the repeated shirt
Meta’s 2014 newsroom recap documents that a public Q&A included the question, “Why do you wear the same shirt every day?” The page links to a video but does not preserve his spoken answer, so it does not establish his reason.

A slow start and demanding meetings before lunch
In a 2018 interview with David Rubenstein, as reported by Axios, Bezos said he went to bed and got up early, read the newspaper, drank coffee, and had breakfast with his children. He said his first meeting was at 10 a.m., that he prioritized eight hours of sleep, and that he scheduled high-IQ meetings before lunch.

Bezos returned to those themes in writing excerpted by Fast Company in 2020. He described wanting to “putter” in the morning and argued that sleep affects the quality of his thinking, energy, and mood. Fortune’s June 2026 account again describes his 10 a.m. start and morning routine. These are attributed descriptions of Bezos’s preferences, not a prescription for everyone’s workday.
Separate reversible choices from consequential ones
In the same 2020 excerpt, Bezos frames executive work as making a small number of high-quality decisions rather than maximizing the number of decisions made. He distinguishes reversible choices—“two-way doors”—from consequential decisions that are difficult to reverse, or “one-way doors.” For a two-way-door decision, he wrote: “If it’s a two-way door, make the decision with a small team or even one high-judgment individual.” In his view, one-way-door decisions warrant deeper analysis. This is his stated management philosophy, not proof that the method guarantees good outcomes.

What can readers reasonably take from these examples?
- Treat routines as personal reports. The schedules and habits above are attributed accounts, not a controlled comparison of how the three men work.
- Do not infer cause from coincidence. None of the cited sources establishes that a particular sleep schedule, workout, wearable, or morning routine created billionaire success.
- Borrow the question, not necessarily the timetable. Bezos’s distinction between reversible and hard-to-reverse decisions offers a way to think about how much analysis a choice merits; it does not mean every reader should adopt his meeting schedule.
- Keep the dates attached. Musk’s workday description dates to 2007, Zuckerberg’s cited routine details were reported in 2026, and Bezos’s descriptions recur across 2018, 2020, and 2026 accounts.
