Entertainment coverage in March 2024 reported that Timothée Chalamet had starred in two top domestic-grossing films within an eight-month span: Wonka and Dune: Part Two. The reports compared the achievement with John Travolta’s Saturday Night Fever and Grease more than four decades earlier. It is a reported box-office distinction, not a formally certified record with a stated methodology.
What is the reported record?
W Magazine described Chalamet’s distinction as appearing in “the top two domestic-grossing films over a span of eight months.” The Associated Press later described it as two top-grossing films released within eight months of each other. Both accounts name Wonka and Dune: Part Two; the earlier comparison is Travolta in Saturday Night Fever and Grease. W Magazine’s March 18, 2024 report and the AP’s March 26, 2024 report frame this as a domestic box-office claim; neither source identifies an official record-keeping authority or a definitive ranking method.

So the headline’s “breaks a 45-year-old record” wording is stronger than the evidence establishes. A careful reading is that coverage reported Chalamet as the first actor in more than four decades to achieve this particular two-film distinction. The exact result depends on what counts as “top-grossing,” the geographic market, and the period used to rank films.
Which films and numbers are involved?
| Actor | Films cited | What the cited coverage establishes |
| Timothée Chalamet | Wonka and Dune: Part Two | W Magazine’s March 2024 account calls these the top two domestic-grossing films over an eight-month span. AP reported global running totals on March 26, 2024. |
| John Travolta | Saturday Night Fever and Grease | Named in the comparison by W Magazine and AP; the claim should not be recast as the two highest-grossing films of calendar year 1978. |
AP reported that Wonka had earned over $632 million worldwide and Dune: Part Two had a $575.5 million running box-office total as of its March 26, 2024 article. These are historical figures reported on that date, not current totals or necessarily final lifetime grosses. The worldwide totals are a separate measure from the domestic ranking used in W Magazine’s description.

Why the wording and time frame matter
Domestic is not worldwide
“Domestic” in U.S. box-office reporting generally refers to the North American market. The reported distinction is framed domestically, while AP’s $632 million-plus and $575.5 million figures are global totals. Those figures cannot independently verify a domestic ranking.
An eight-month span is not a calendar year
A rolling span between releases, an eight-month ranking window, and a calendar-year chart are different tests. Box Office Mojo’s 1978 domestic chart lists Grease at No. 1 and Saturday Night Fever at No. 7 in its 1978 gross column. That chart also has a separate cumulative-total column. It does not establish the ranking basis behind the reported Travolta comparison, but it does show why the claim should not be simplified into saying those were the two highest-grossing films of 1978.

Grosses measure different things
Annual gross, cumulative domestic gross, worldwide lifetime gross, and opening-weekend revenue are not interchangeable. The record comparison concerns the reported domestic distinction; the worldwide totals and opening figures provide context, not proof of the same ranking.
How strong was Dune: Part Two’s opening?
In a March 3, 2024 report, AP said Dune: Part Two opened to $81.5 million in North America and $178.5 million globally, citing studio estimates. Those are opening-weekend and global-debut figures, respectively—not lifetime totals. AP also reported that the film’s promotional campaign featured a viral popcorn bucket inspired by the story’s sandworms. The report establishes its promotional connection, not that the collectible remains available for sale.

What can readers conclude?
Chalamet’s pairing of Wonka and Dune: Part Two was widely reported as repeating a box-office distinction associated with Travolta’s Saturday Night Fever and Grease. The most accurate version keeps the attribution and limits intact: it was a reported domestic, eight-month distinction, not a universally certified record supported here by a published methodology. The older comparison should not be treated as a claim that Travolta’s films ranked first and second on the 1978 annual chart.
