In the United States, the main options include custodial UGMA/UTMA accounts for assets given to a child, 529 plans and Coverdell ESAs for qualified education costs, and custodial IRAs for a child with earned income. A newer option, the Trump Account (530A), is described by Investor.gov as an account for eligible U.S. children. The right fit depends on what the money is for, who owns it, how it can be used, and when the child takes control.
What a child investment account is—and why the account type matters
A child investment account holds money or investments intended to benefit a minor. The phrase does not identify a single legal or tax structure. An account might be owned by the child and managed by an adult, belong to an adult with a child named as beneficiary, or be an individual retirement account for which the child qualifies through earned income.

Those distinctions affect more than paperwork. They determine who owns the assets, which expenses are allowed, how investment earnings and withdrawals may be taxed, whether the money can be redirected if plans change, and when the child gains control. A general-purpose gift to a child is not interchangeable with money reserved for education or retirement.

Compare the main account types
| Account | Typical purpose | Ownership or control | Key restrictions or rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| UGMA/UTMA custodial account | Assets held for a child without limiting the intended use to qualified education expenses | The property is for the child; an adult custodian manages it while the child is a minor. Control transfers under applicable state law and account setup. | Check the governing state law and account terms for the transfer age. Do not assume the gift can be reclaimed. |
| 529 plan | Qualified education costs | The account has one designated beneficiary. IRS rules allow certain beneficiary changes and family-member transfers. | Qualified uses include specified education expenses; nonqualified uses may have different tax consequences. Plan terms and benefits vary. |
| Coverdell ESA | Qualified education costs | A trust or custodial account is set up solely for the designated beneficiary’s qualified education expenses. | Contributions are cash and total no more than $2,000 per beneficiary per year across accounts. The beneficiary generally must be under 18 when the account is created, unless a special-needs exception applies. |
| Custodial IRA | Retirement saving based on the child’s earned income | The child has the IRA; a parent may establish it as a custodial account while the child is young. | The child must have eligible earned income. Age alone does not establish eligibility. |
| Trump Account (530A) | Tax-advantaged investing for an eligible child | Investor.gov describes the account as being in the child’s name, with a parent or guardian as custodian until age 18. | Investor.gov says the accounts are launching July 4, 2026. Check current official rules for eligibility, contributions, investment restrictions, and operation. |
The comparison is a starting point, not a substitute for reading account documents. The SEC cautions that education-saving alternatives can differ in tax treatment and financial-aid effects. Plan fees, investment menus, and state benefits also vary, so compare the specific plan or provider rather than treating an account label as a complete description.
UGMA and UTMA custodial accounts: assets that belong to the child
UGMA and UTMA accounts are custodial arrangements that let an adult hold and manage property for a minor. They are often considered when a family wants assets for the child without requiring that every dollar be used for qualified education expenses. That broader purpose comes with an important trade-off: the property is the child’s, not a parent’s reserve fund.
How the arrangement works
An adult custodian manages the account for the minor under the applicable account terms and state law. The child is the beneficiary-owner of the property, and the adult’s authority is custodial rather than a license to treat the assets as personal funds. Because the gift is for the child, do not assume an adult can take it back or redirect it for the adult’s own benefit.

The age at which custodianship ends is not one universal number. It depends on the governing state law and account setup. Before opening an account, ask the provider which state’s law applies, when control is scheduled to transfer, and what happens when the child reaches that age. The SEC’s general materials identify UGMA/UTMA as a category but do not establish a state-by-state transfer-age table.
What to weigh before choosing one
- Control later: Consider whether you are comfortable with the child taking control at the applicable transfer age, including the possibility that the child chooses a use you would not have chosen.
- Financial aid: An account held for the child can affect the financial-aid picture. The specific treatment depends on the circumstances; verify it before relying on an assumed aid outcome.
- Tax and account terms: Tax treatment and available investments depend on current rules and the provider’s terms. Do not infer a particular tax result from the word “custodial.”
529 plans: education-focused saving with plan-specific rules
A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged arrangement designed to save for future qualified education costs. The SEC describes plans as sponsored by states, state agencies, or educational institutions. It distinguishes education savings plans from prepaid tuition plans; a few plans have residency requirements. States can differ in plan terms, investment options, fees, and potential state tax benefits.
What a 529 may pay for
The SEC’s January 28, 2026 overview and companion bulletin describe qualified uses that include specified post-secondary expenses; tuition and certain expenses for elementary or secondary public, private, or religious schools; certain costs for registered apprenticeship programs; and qualified education-loan repayments up to $10,000 total per beneficiary. The $10,000 figure is a total-per-beneficiary limit for qualified loan repayments, not an annual allowance. Check the specific plan and current federal rules before taking a distribution, because the permitted use and its tax treatment depend on the details.
Beneficiary flexibility and trade-offs
A 529 account has one designated beneficiary. The IRS describes certain beneficiary changes and transfers to family members, which can provide flexibility if the original beneficiary’s education plans change. That does not mean every change, transfer, or withdrawal is automatically tax-free. Confirm that the proposed action qualifies under current rules before moving or spending the funds.

When comparing plans, look at the actual investment menu and fees, whether your state offers a tax incentive, any residency condition, and how the plan fits your education goal. The plan sponsored by your state is one option to evaluate, not an automatic best choice; terms and benefits differ.
Coverdell ESAs: a narrower education account
The IRS defines a Coverdell Education Savings Account as a trust or custodial account set up solely to pay qualified education expenses for its designated beneficiary. At the time the account is created, the beneficiary generally must be under 18, unless the beneficiary is a special-needs beneficiary.
Contribution and distribution rules
Contributions must be cash. The total contributed for one beneficiary cannot exceed $2,000 in a year across all Coverdell accounts for that beneficiary. This is a combined annual limit, not a separate $2,000 allowance for each account.
Qualified distributions are generally tax-free up to the amount of qualified education expenses. If distributions exceed eligible expenses, some earnings may be taxable. The IRS says remaining funds generally must be distributed within 30 days after the beneficiary turns 30, subject to exceptions and permitted transfers to family members. Check the current IRS rules to determine whether an exception or transfer applies.

These limits make a Coverdell different from a general custodial account and from a 529. Consider it only if its education-only purpose and contribution rules fit the family’s plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Custodial IRAs: retirement saving requires earned income
A child can have an IRA if the child has earned income, and a parent can establish the account as a custodial IRA, according to Investor.gov. The relevant qualification is the child’s eligible earned income—not simply being a minor, having savings, or receiving a gift.
Before contributing, establish that the child’s income qualifies and check the current contribution and tax rules for the applicable year. The available facts here do not establish a current annual contribution threshold or define every category of eligible income, so confirm those details with current official guidance or a qualified tax professional. A custodial IRA is for retirement saving; it should not be treated as a general-purpose account for near-term spending.

Trump Accounts (530A): check current implementation details
Investor.gov’s current investing introduction describes Trump Accounts as tax-advantaged investment accounts that can be opened for U.S. citizens under age 18. It says the account is held in the child’s name, with a parent or guardian serving as custodian until the child turns 18, and gives July 4, 2026 as the launch date.
Because the stated launch date has passed, families considering this option should check current official information rather than infer that every account feature is available or settled from a launch announcement. Verify eligibility, how contributions work, investment restrictions, account operation, and applicable tax treatment before deciding. The cited overview does not provide enough detail to compare those mechanics fully with established account types.
How to choose an account for your goal
Start with the intended use and work outward. A plan to save for education is a different problem from making an unrestricted gift to a child or investing for retirement based on the child’s earnings.
- Name the goal. Decide whether the money is for qualified education, a broader pool of assets for the child, or retirement saving tied to earned income.
- Identify the owner and decision-maker. Ask who legally owns the assets, who can manage them now, and when the child may take control. For a custodial account, establish the applicable state-law transfer age before contributing.
- Check allowed uses and consequences. Determine which expenses qualify, what happens if the money is used for another purpose, and whether a beneficiary change or family transfer is permitted.
- Compare real plan or provider terms. Review investment choices, account fees, administrative charges, and any residency requirements. For a 529, check whether your home state offers a tax benefit and what conditions apply.
- Consider aid and tax effects. Alternative education-saving methods can have different financial-aid and tax implications. Evaluate the account in the context of the family’s circumstances instead of assuming that all child accounts receive the same treatment.
- Verify current rules before acting. Use current IRS, SEC, state, and provider information for the relevant year and jurisdiction, particularly before contributing, transferring a beneficiary, or taking a distribution.
For decisions involving tax liability, financial aid, or state-specific custodial law, a qualified tax or financial professional can assess the details that a general account description cannot settle.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling every option a custodial brokerage account. A 529 and Coverdell are education-focused; an IRA depends on the child’s earned income. Their ownership and use rules differ.
- Assuming a custodial gift remains under the parent’s control. UGMA/UTMA property is for the child, and control eventually transfers under applicable law and account terms.
- Assuming every education withdrawal is tax-free. Tax treatment depends on whether the expense and transaction meet the rules for that account.
- Using a generic transfer age or tax threshold. State law and tax-year rules matter. Check current, applicable sources rather than carrying forward an age or number from another state or year.
- Comparing only investment performance. Fees, allowed uses, control, state benefits, flexibility, and aid consequences can matter as much as the investment menu.
