An airline no-show clause can put the rest of your ticket at risk if you miss or skip one flight segment. Depending on the airline and ticket terms, a return or onward reservation may be cancelled, leaving you to arrange and pay for replacement travel. Contact the airline or ticket-issuing agent as soon as you know you may miss a flight, and get clear confirmation that later segments remain usable.
What is an airline no-show clause?
A no-show clause is a ticket condition that addresses what happens when you do not take a flight segment on your itinerary. On a return ticket or multi-flight booking, the airline may treat failure to use one segment as grounds to cancel later segments. For example, skipping the outbound flight does not necessarily leave the return flight available.
The details depend on the carrier, ticket, and circumstances. A no-show can mean a traveler chose not to fly or arrived too late; it is not simply another name for every missed flight.
Why should you care?
The immediate risk is losing a flight you already paid for. If the airline cancels a return or onward reservation, you may have to buy a new ticket or pay a fare difference or charge. BEUC, the European Consumer Organisation, described these potential consequences in a 2018 statement about no-show practices: BEUC’s explanation of no-show clauses.

Airline rules differ
There is no single notification deadline or remedy that applies across airlines. These examples show why you should check the conditions for your actual ticket rather than rely on another carrier’s policy.

| Airline | What the cited policy says | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| British Airways | It may cancel return or onward reservations if you neither cancel before the check-in deadline nor show up. | Check the applicable ticket conditions and deadline. British Airways terms. |
| Etihad | It says later reservations are cancelled after a no-show unless you give advance notice. For travel originating in the EU or UK, it describes contacting the airline within 24 hours of the unused segment’s departure to request preservation of the remaining reservations. If that process is followed, Etihad says it will protect them without an additional fare adjustment. | The 24-hour process described here is specific to travel originating in the EU or UK; do not assume it applies to other itineraries. Etihad’s no-show rule. |
| Qatar Airways | The cited terms list an exception for tickets purchased in Italy, with deadlines and possible fare-difference consequences. | The Italy-specific exception should not be generalized to tickets purchased elsewhere. Qatar Airways terms for Italy-purchased tickets. |
| Delta | Its agent-facing policy says customers must notify Delta or their travel agent before departure to change or cancel and retain ticket value. | The policy, updated 18 December 2025, applies to DL-marketed tickets and describes exceptions for irregular operations and specified schedule changes or delays. Confirm the rule for your ticket. Delta’s policy. |
What to do if you may miss or skip a segment
- Contact the airline or the agent that issued your ticket as soon as possible. If you can, do so before the flight’s scheduled departure.
- Ask whether later segments can be preserved. Be specific: can the airline cancel or change the segment you will not take while keeping every remaining flight? Ask whether a fee, fare adjustment, or ticket reissue is required.
- Confirm the status of each remaining flight. Request clear confirmation and save the message, case number, or other record of the response.
- Review the rules for your booking. Check the ticket conditions and fare rules, and note whether you booked directly with the airline or through an agent. Deadlines, notice channels, and exceptions vary.
These steps follow the notice processes described in the cited airline terms, but they do not guarantee that the carrier will preserve your later flights.
Is a no-show the same as a missed connection?
No. A traveler-caused no-show—such as choosing not to take a segment or arriving too late—is different from missing a connection because an earlier flight was delayed. The relevant rights and remedies may therefore be different.

EU guidance says compensation for a missed connection may apply if the flights were booked as part of a single reservation, EU passenger-rights rules apply, the passenger reaches the final destination more than three hours late, and extraordinary circumstances did not cause the delay. It also identifies failure to respect the boarding time at the transfer airport as a reason compensation may not be due. See the EU guidance on missed connections.
The EU’s passenger-rights guidance also says a passenger may be denied boarding for not taking the outbound flight on a return reservation, or another flight in a consecutive itinerary. Its standard explanation of compensation, reimbursement or rerouting, and assistance concerns eligible passengers who presented on time with a valid reservation and travel documents and were denied boarding because of overbooking or operational reasons. Those protections should not be assumed to resolve a no-show dispute automatically. See the EU guidance on air-passenger rights.

Are airline no-show clauses illegal?
The cited material does not establish a general legal answer for every airline, ticket, or country. A European Commission document dated 30 September 2025 describes a proposed restriction on no-show policies for return flights, but the available information does not establish its legislative status as of 8 October 2026. A proposal is not the same as a rule in force; do not treat it as current law without confirmation of enactment and scope. See the European Commission document.
