The “next week” in this story was the week of May 1, 2023—not an upcoming return-to-office date. Amazon’s internal FAQ, as reported by GeekWire on April 26, 2023, said covered corporate and tech employees should work from their assigned office at least three days a week once the building was ready. Amazon later announced a different expectation: a return to pre-pandemic office work, effective January 2, 2025.
What did Amazon’s 2023 FAQ tell employees?
Amazon’s internal FAQ, as reproduced in GeekWire’s April 26, 2023 report, said: “We expect all employees to return to their assigned office at least three days a week when their building is ready.” The report described this as applying to corporate and tech employees. May 1, 2023, was the stated start date for the expectation, subject to building readiness.
GeekWire said the FAQ contained 28 questions and answers. The internal FAQ itself was not linked as a public document, so its details here are those reported by GeekWire rather than an independently available public policy text.
Exceptions and employees unable to comply
The FAQ described continued remote status for some roles, including certain sales and customer-support jobs. Employees whose roles did not allow remote work but who could not comply were directed to discuss their situation with their manager. GeekWire reported that a permanent remote-work exception required senior leadership approval.

How teams would choose in-office days
The FAQ said teams would generally coordinate common office days, with managers working with employees to identify suitable days. A separate memo for Worldwide Stores said Wednesday would be a core day for many teams and that some field and store corporate teams could count Friday field work as an office day. Those examples applied to that division’s guidance, not necessarily to Amazon teams generally.
Workstations and office readiness
The FAQ described workstations equipped with one or two monitors, a keyboard, a mouse, and a universal docking station. It also addressed building readiness, indoor air quality, office redesign, security, nursing-parent support, and bringing dogs to work. These were workplace details, not recommendations that employees buy particular equipment.

Why Amazon said it wanted more in-person work
In his 2023 employee announcement, CEO Andy Jassy said Amazon believed working in person would improve learning, collaboration, invention, and team connection. Those were the company’s stated reasons for the policy, not findings established by the FAQ.
Jassy also acknowledged that implementation details were still being worked out when he announced the change: “We made this decision at a s-team meeting earlier this week, and for a number of reasons (including the adjustments I know will be required for some of our employees), I wanted to share with you as early as I could even though we haven’t worked out all the execution details yet.”

How the guidance changed after 2023
The three-day FAQ was one stage in a series of changes, not a statement of Amazon’s present-day policy. Amazon’s 2021 employee message said work-location decisions for corporate roles would be made team by team at the Director level. In 2023, Amazon set a central three-day expectation while describing team coordination and role-based exceptions. In September 2024, Jassy announced a return to pre-pandemic office expectations, effective January 2, 2025.

In the September 2024 message, Jassy said employees were expected in the office “outside of extenuating circumstances” or if they already had an approved Remote Work Exception. The message specified that exceptions required approval through an s-team leader. The FAQ reported in 2023 should therefore be read as historical context, not as a reliable description of the later guidance.

What the report said about the transition
Some Amazon employees had been hired during the pandemic and might not have met their colleagues in person, according to GeekWire’s report. The story also included employee criticism about commuting, productivity, safety, and communication. Those were views expressed by employees quoted or described in the report; they do not establish how all Amazon employees experienced the change.
