No published figure in the sources covered here identifies which age group buys the most Nintendo consoles or games. Nintendo has reported information about Switch users and active Nintendo Accounts, while U.S. industry data describes video game players overall. Neither measures Nintendo purchases by the buyer’s age. The available evidence does show why Nintendo should not be treated as a children-only brand—but it cannot name a dominant buyer age group.
Is Nintendo mostly for kids?
No. Nintendo products are used by people across age groups, but that does not establish who buys the most. A parent might purchase a console for a child, an adult might buy one for themselves, or a household might share it. Those situations make the purchaser’s age different from the player’s age.
Nintendo’s 2022 investor presentation included an age chart for Switch users. It offers Nintendo-specific context about users, not a current breakdown of purchasers or sales by buyer age. Nintendo’s 2022 Switch user presentation should therefore not be cited as proof that one age group buys the most.
What do the available numbers actually measure?
| Figure | What it measures | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 129 million annual playing users, July 2024–June 2025 | Nintendo reported this figure in an August 2025 investor presentation. It counts qualifying Nintendo Accounts registered to Switch or Switch 2 systems that used software at least once during the 12-month period. | It is not a count of distinct purchasers and does not provide an age breakdown. Accounts whose users did not agree to share user information are excluded; connected-system usage may be revised retroactively. Nintendo’s 2025 presentation |
| Average player age: 37 | The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) reports this for video game players overall in the United States in its 2026 Essential Facts. | It is not the average age of Nintendo players or Nintendo buyers, and it says nothing about which age group buys the most. ESA 2026 Essential Facts |
| 90% of ratings assigned in 2025 were E, E10+, or T | The ESA reports this share of ratings assigned by the ESRB in 2025. | It describes game ratings, not sales, player ages, or purchaser ages. ESA 2026 Essential Facts |
Do adults buy Nintendo Switch?
Yes, adults can buy and play Nintendo products, and Nintendo’s broad active-user base is consistent with use beyond childhood. But the figures above cannot tell us how many adult buyers there are, how they compare with child or teen buyers, or which group spends the most. The distinction matters: an adult account holder, an adult player, and the person who paid for a console are not necessarily the same person.

How should parents judge whether a Nintendo game suits a child?
Check the individual game rather than assuming Nintendo games are all appropriate for children. In the United States, ESRB ratings and content descriptors provide guidance about a game’s age category and content. The fact that many games receive ratings of E, E10+, or T does not mean every Nintendo title is suitable for every child—or that those rating categories reveal the ages of buyers.
- Look at the game’s ESRB rating and read its content descriptors.
- Consider the child’s maturity, interests, and comfort with the described content.
- If the console will be shared, consider who will use it and whether the game fits everyone expected to play.
What should you conclude before buying?
There is no supported answer such as “children,” “teens,” or “adults” for the age group that buys the most Nintendo. The best available figures describe users or the U.S. video game industry as a whole, not Nintendo purchases split by buyer age. For a specific purchase, decide based on who will play, whether the household will share the hardware, and the rating and content of the particular game.
