A five-year stock return tells you what happened between two dates. It does not tell you how severe the losses were on the way, whether dividends made up part of the gain, what you paid in costs and taxes, or whether the result is likely to repeat. A positive five-year figure can coexist with a damaging interim decline, and a negative figure can occur even after an investor held for what felt like a long time.
To use the number intelligently, identify whether it is cumulative or annualized, whether it includes dividends, and which exact dates and benchmark it uses. Then examine the path of returns and ask whether your time horizon, risk tolerance and portfolio diversification can withstand similar losses.

What a five-year return actually measures
A five-year return is an endpoint comparison. It compares an investment’s value at a starting date with its value five years later. The result is a description of that particular holding period, not a complete measure of risk and not a forecast.

Cumulative return
A cumulative return states the total change over the whole period. If an investment rises from $10,000 to $12,100, its cumulative return is 21%. The figure does not say whether the account climbed steadily, fell sharply and recovered, or moved sideways for years before rising near the end.

Annualized return
An annualized return converts the total change into a compounded per-year rate. For the same hypothetical values, the calculation is (12,100 ÷ 10,000)^(1 ÷ 5) − 1, or approximately 3.9% a year. That is a mathematical equivalent rate, not a claim that the investment earned 3.9% in each calendar year.
Never compare a five-year cumulative number directly with a five-year annualized number. Check the label, the dates and the calculation method first. Annualized return is useful for comparing periods of different lengths, while cumulative return shows the actual overall change an investor experienced over the stated window.
Price return versus total return
A price-only return tracks changes in the share price. A total return also counts dividends, generally assuming they are reinvested according to the calculation method. For a dividend-paying stock or index, omitting dividends can understate the return that a holder received. Ask explicitly whether the quoted figure is a price return or a total return and whether dividend reinvestment is assumed.
Why the same five-year endpoint can hide very different risks
Two investments can finish five years with the same gain while imposing very different experiences. One might decline 10% and recover gradually; another might lose half its value, remain depressed for years and then rebound. The endpoint alone cannot reveal the largest interim loss, how long recovery took, or whether an investor would have had to sell during the decline.

Interim losses and drawdowns
A drawdown is a fall from a previous high to a later low. It matters because a loss changes the amount needed to recover: a 50% decline requires a 100% gain from the bottom just to return to the starting value. A five-year return should therefore be read alongside the investment’s drawdowns for the same dates. Do not assign a drawdown or volatility number to a specific stock unless it has been calculated or reported for that investment and period.
Volatility and the path of returns
Volatility describes how widely returns move, but a five-year endpoint does not show the sequence of those moves. A volatile path can create forced selling, margin calls or a need to withdraw money at an unfavorable time even when the eventual five-year result is positive. The practical risk is partly the chance that the investor cannot remain invested long enough to reach the endpoint.
Concentration risk
A single company, industry or narrow theme can produce a very different risk profile from a diversified portfolio, even if both report the same five-year return. Company-specific events can permanently impair a stock’s value. A five-year label does not make concentrated ownership safe.

| Measure | Result | Period or scope |
|---|---|---|
| Average annual total return | 10.1% | All rolling five-year periods, 1926–2017 |
| Worst annualized five-year return | −12.4% | 1928–1932 |
| Best annualized five-year return | 28.6% | 1995–1999 |
These are annualized total returns for a broad U.S. large-cap index, not cumulative returns for an individual stock. They are historical observations from a dataset ending in 2017, not current market results. They also exclude the costs of buying and selling stocks and other expenses a real investor would incur. Taxes depend on the investor and account and are not represented by these figures.
“These average annual returns reflect past performance of the S&P 500 Index; you should not regard them as an indication of future performance of either the U.S. stock market as a whole or the Fund in particular.”
The range demonstrates why “the market returned about 10% over five years” is not a risk description. A five-year period can end with a substantial annualized loss or an unusually strong gain, depending on its start and end dates. The example does not establish that every market, country, stock or future five-year window will have the same range.

Yes. Five years is not a guarantee of a positive result. The historical S&P 500 example includes a negative annualized five-year period, and an individual company can perform worse than a broad index. A loss can also arise when dividends are absent, when costs reduce a modest gain, or when an investor buys and sells at dates that differ from the quoted window.

Holding longer can give an investment more time to recover, but it does not remove market, business or valuation risk. If the money is needed on a fixed date, the relevant question is not whether a five-year average has been positive; it is whether the investor can tolerate a substantial loss at that date.
How to compare a five-year return with the S&P 500
A comparison is meaningful only when the two results use compatible definitions and dates. Work through each of these checks:
| Comparison check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Window | Identical start date, end date and five-year length | Different windows capture different market conditions. |
| Return convention | Cumulative or annualized; price return or total return | Mixed conventions can make one result appear better simply because it is measured differently. |
| Reference | A similar investment and an appropriate benchmark | A benchmark should match the investment’s market, size, style and geography as closely as practical. |
| Risk path | Interim drawdowns, volatility and recovery time | The endpoint says nothing about how difficult it was to hold. |
| Net experience | Trading costs, fund expenses and the investor’s tax situation | An index result is not automatically the investor’s after-cost or after-tax return. |
FINRA explains that annualized return expresses performance per year over a holding period and warns that historical returns do not guarantee future results. A benchmark is a comparison tool, not a safety certification. A stock that beats the S&P 500 may still have exposed its owner to losses that were unacceptable for the owner’s goal.
What the number means for your own risk
Time horizon
Your time horizon is when the money must be available, not simply how long you hope to remain invested. Investor.gov says asset allocation depends in part on time horizon. A goal due in five years may not tolerate the same stock exposure as retirement savings that will remain invested for decades, because a market decline near the withdrawal date can force a permanent loss.

Risk tolerance and risk capacity
Risk tolerance is how much uncertainty and loss you can emotionally accept. Risk capacity is how much loss your finances can withstand without derailing the goal. A five-year return statistic measures neither. An investor who would sell after a 30% decline, or who needs the money for a known payment, may not be able to rely on the long-run behavior implied by a historical average.
Diversification
Investor.gov describes diversification as spreading money among different investments to reduce risk. Diversification can limit the damage from one company or sector failing, but it cannot eliminate market losses. It also does not make a five-year result predictable. Evaluate the stock within the whole portfolio rather than treating its standalone return as the portfolio’s risk.
A practical process for evaluating any five-year stock result
- Write down the exact dates. Record the start and end dates and confirm that the period is exactly five years, rather than an approximate calendar span.
- Identify the return type. Label the figure cumulative or annualized, and determine whether it is a price return or a total return with dividends.
- Reconcile the starting value. Check for stock splits, distributions, reinvestment assumptions and any difference between the quoted price and the price an investor could actually have received.
- Inspect the path. Look for the largest decline, the time spent below the previous high and the volatility during the period. Use data for the same security and dates.
- Choose a fitting benchmark. Compare with a broad index only when it is a reasonable reference; use a more specific benchmark when the investment is concentrated in a sector, country or style.
- Estimate the investor’s net result. Account for expense ratios, commissions or spreads where applicable, and recognize that taxes vary by account and investor.
- Test the goal. Ask whether you could keep holding through a loss and whether the money is needed before a potential recovery.
- Review the portfolio role. Consider position size, diversification and correlations with your other holdings before deciding what the five-year number means.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Calling a positive return “safe.” Replace the label with a description of the observed endpoint and examine interim losses.
- Mixing annualized and cumulative figures. Convert both results to the same convention before comparing them.
- Ignoring dividends. Confirm whether the data is price-only or total return, especially for dividend-paying investments.
- Using a convenient benchmark. Select a benchmark that resembles the investment and use the same dates.
- Treating an index result as personal performance. Subtract or estimate real expenses where possible and separate index history from an individual portfolio’s outcome.
- Assuming five years is a universal holding period. Match the allocation to the date the money is needed and to your ability to withstand losses.
- Looking only at the average. Review the range of historical outcomes and remember that an average does not predict the next period.
What calculators and tracking tools can—and cannot—do
A return calculator or portfolio tracker can help standardize dates, convert cumulative performance to an annualized rate and display dividends or drawdowns when the underlying data supports those measures. It can also make a benchmark comparison easier. It cannot forecast the next five-year result, determine your personal risk capacity or turn a historical average into a guarantee. Treat any output as a description of chosen inputs, and verify whether fees, taxes and reinvestment assumptions are included.
The bottom line
A five-year stock return answers one narrow question: how the investment’s value changed between two dates under a stated return convention. It does not answer how much risk was taken, how painful the interim losses were, what the investor kept after costs and taxes, or whether the outcome will recur. Read the figure with its dates, dividend treatment, benchmark, drawdowns and investor context, then decide whether the holding fits your time horizon, risk tolerance and diversified portfolio.
