A poll reported in April 2025 found that 33% of U.S. adults viewed Elon Musk very or somewhat favorably. That is a dated favorability result—not evidence that most Americans consider him “toxic waste,” a phrase in Futurism’s opinionated headline rather than a survey response.

What the April 2025 poll reported

Futurism’s April 28, 2025, article, by Victor Tangermann, attributed the finding to an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll. It said 33% of U.S. adults viewed Musk very or somewhat favorably in April. The figure describes the favorable-response category; it does not, by itself, establish how the remaining respondents viewed him.

The article also quoted an unnamed 75-year-old retiree from Pennsylvania, attributed to the AP, saying: “He thinks you run a government like you run a business. And you don’t do that. One is for the benefit of the people, and the other is for the benefit of the corporation.” That is one respondent’s view, not a summary of all poll participants.

What was reported about Republican respondents

Futurism and Yahoo News’ syndicated version reported that unfavorable views of Musk among Republican respondents rose from 21% in December to 25% in April. The articles do not provide the subgroup sample sizes or full tables, so these figures should be treated as secondary reporting rather than a fully contextualized comparison.

What the figures can—and cannot—tell you

The reported 33% concerns U.S. adults’ very or somewhat favorable views in April 2025. It is not a 2026 measurement, and it does not substantiate the headline metaphor as a poll finding. The Republican figures refer to a separate subgroup and an unfavorable response, so they should not be conflated with the all-adult favorable figure.

The retrieved coverage does not include the exact survey question, field dates, sample size, margin of error, weighting details, or the full questionnaire and tables. Without those details, readers cannot assess the survey’s precision or independently interpret how respondents were asked to rate Musk. The reported percentages are best understood with their date, population, response category, and attribution attached.
