In August 2018, WeWork said it had about 900,000 square feet across seven Seattle-area office buildings and expected to reach 1.5 million square feet across 14 buildings by early 2019. That was a company-reported baseline and forecast—not a current or independently audited footprint. The planned growth involved sites in both Seattle and Bellevue, with a mix of open locations, signed leases, and future openings.
What WeWork announced in 2018
GeekWire reported on August 23, 2018, that WeWork expected to expand its Seattle-area footprint substantially. The company preferred to track capacity by desks: it reported 4,320 desks at the start of 2018 and projected 13,301 by early 2019. The square-footage and desk totals are separate measures; neither should be read as a present-day count. GeekWire’s August 2018 report attributed the figures to WeWork.
The report described a pipeline spanning Seattle and Bellevue. Some locations were already open or recently opened, while others were signed or planned. It said three Seattle locations expected by year-end would add more than 2,000 desks combined.

The publication’s figures do not make every site directly comparable: desk capacity and leased area measure different things, and the account did not assign a square-footage figure to each named location.

What independent lease reporting confirms
Newmark Knight Frank’s third-quarter 2018 Seattle office report recorded a 91,096-square-foot WeWork direct lease at Madison Centre. It also listed 20,234 square feet at 501 Eastlake. The market report is a useful transaction-level cross-check for lease area, but it does not validate GeekWire’s broader projected desk total or establish a current WeWork footprint. Why WeWork said Seattle was a fit
WeWork’s stated rationale, as reported by GeekWire, centered on technology companies, startups, and businesses arriving from outside the region that needed office space quickly. Flexible terms could suit companies unsure how large a local team would become or how long it would need space. The article reported that enterprise customers made up a quarter of WeWork’s member base at the time.

Sonos illustrated the immediate-space use case: its senior vice president of communications said the company was “growing so darn fast,” and about 40 of its 120 Seattle employees were working from WeWork’s Holyoke location, according to the report. These are historical details from 2018, not a description of Sonos’s or WeWork’s current arrangements.
What happened after the announcement
In March 2019, GeekWire reported that WeWork’s Seattle-area footprint had reached 1.7 million square feet, up from 900,000 square feet the previous summer. It also reported that the company expected at least 19 locations by the end of 2019. Those are figures and expectations reported at that time, not a verified present-day total. The 2018 story also forecast a combined WeWork/WeLive project at Third and Lenora for 2020. The building history records that the lease was terminated by mutual agreement in October 2019, before the forecast opening; the project therefore should not be treated as an opening that occurred as planned. The original headline describes a historical expansion announcement, not a current Seattle leasing update. WeWork’s current Seattle office page describes private and full-floor offices, flexible terms, and pay-as-you-go day passes and hourly meeting rooms; it says pricing depends on location, size, and layout.
