Wedding Registry Etiquette: 7 Dos and Don’ts for Couples and Guests

A registry should make gift-giving easier, not create an obligation. Here are seven etiquette tips for building, sharing and using a wedding registry.

A wedding registry is a menu of useful gift ideas, not a requirement. Couples can make it easier for guests by listing things they genuinely want at a range of prices and sharing the list discreetly. Guests may choose something else—or give an amount that suits their own budget and relationship with the couple.

1. Register for things you will use

Start by taking stock of what you already own, then consider your shared home, interests and plans. Kitchen appliances, tableware, linens and home decor are familiar choices, but the right list depends on the couple. Gardening equipment, camping gear, travel experiences, gift cards, charitable donations or contributions toward a goal can also make sense when they reflect what you want.

Emily Post says honeymoon funds and charitable registries can be acceptable; describe contributions thoughtfully and choose causes with care. A registry should help guests choose, not encourage a couple to add items simply to make the list longer. See Emily Post Institute’s wedding registry etiquette guidance and The Knot’s registry etiquette guide for examples of gift types.

2. Include a range of prices and gift types

A varied list gives guests room to choose a gift that feels comfortable. Include both lower-priced and higher-priced options, and consider different kinds of gifts rather than listing only household items or only contributions. Emily Post recommends variety and says couples may have more than one registry, with three as its suggested upper limit. That is etiquette guidance, not a universal rule.

There is no required amount that every guest should spend. Avoid framing a particular price as the expected minimum; guests’ budgets and relationships with the couple differ.

3. Make the registry accessible to different guests

Think about how guests prefer to shop. An online list can be convenient, but Emily Post recommends a brick-and-mortar option for guests who are less comfortable shopping online. Include some classic gift choices for people who prefer them, even if the couple’s main list reflects more personal interests.

If a shower has a distinct theme, a separate list of suitable, generally lower-priced ideas may help guests shop for that occasion. Keep the list focused on the event rather than treating a shower as a reason to request more expensive gifts.

4. Share registry details discreetly

Put registry links on the wedding website, where guests can find practical event information, and let close family or the wedding party know where you registered so they can answer questions. Emily Post advises against putting registry information on wedding invitations or their enclosures and against promoting the registry on social media. The Knot likewise points couples toward the wedding website rather than the formal invitation.

5. Treat the list as optional—and choose gifts within your means

A registry is a convenience, not a mandate. Guests can buy something from the list, select a different gift or give cash or a check if that feels appropriate. Emily Post puts the choice plainly: “The choice of gift is always up to the giver.”

When deciding what to give, consider your own budget, your closeness to the couple and your judgment. You do not need to match the hosts’ per-person wedding expense. Cash or a check can be a suitable gift, including for couples who already have a household or are saving toward a goal. For more on guest decisions, see Emily Post Institute’s guidance on choosing a wedding gift.

6. Keep the list current and useful

Set up the registry early enough for engagement and shower gifts, then add items as plans develop. Revisit it as gifts are purchased so guests can still find available choices. Advice publishers sometimes offer item-count formulas, but those are planning heuristics, not etiquette rules; the useful number depends on the couple and the guests who may be shopping.

When choosing where to register, consider whether the service supports the gift types you want, is easy for guests to find and use, offers a workable range of prices, and lets you maintain the list as gifts are bought. A physical-store option can help guests who prefer shopping in person. For a planning checklist, Zola’s wedding registry checklist was last updated June 5, 2026.

TRULIVA Wedding Guest Book - Guest Sign in Book - Wedding Reception Registry Book - Hard Cover, 7" x 9" (Eucalyptus Gold Foil, Book)
  • Beautiful guest book: hard cover, gold foil, gilded edges, 7" x 9", lined, perfect for keeping sweet memories and keepsake.
  • Perfect guest book for all occasions: leave comments, wishes, share memories, add photos, could be used at wedding, anniversaries, birthdays, bridal shower, baby showers, or quinceanera.
  • Excellent design: watercolor green leaves on front cover, 120 blank lined pages with 13 lines per page, 120 gsm paper, nothing is bleeding through.

7. Send thank-you notes promptly

The Knot advises sending a thank-you note within two weeks for gifts received before the wedding and within three months for gifts received on or after the wedding. Emily Post also describes three months after the wedding as a reasonable general timeframe. Record who gave each gift as it arrives so you can thank guests personally.

What guests and couples should remember

  • Couples: choose gifts that suit your shared life, and make the list varied and easy to access.
  • Couples: share registry information on the wedding website or by word of mouth, not on the invitation.
  • Guests: a registry is a suggestion; gift choice and spending remain yours.
  • Guests: choose an amount that works for your budget and relationship with the couple, not the wedding’s per-person cost.

These recommendations reflect primarily US-oriented etiquette guidance. Customs can vary by culture, family and community, so use the principles—consideration, choice and discretion—in a way that fits your circumstances.
