Westland Books After Amazon: What Pratilipi Took Over—and What It Didn’t

Westland Books’ 2022 transition is described both as a new Pratilipi venture and, later, as an acquisition. The distinction: much of the team and operation continued, but rights and titles did not automatically transfer.

Westland Books did not simply continue as the same Amazon-owned company after Amazon shut it down in 2022. Contemporary reporting said the company itself was not sold; Pratilipi instead established a new publishing venture that carried forward much of Westland’s team and publishing operation. A later account described that move as an acquisition. The distinction matters: continuity of staff and publishing activity is supported, but an automatic transfer of every author, imprint, title or right is not.

Was Westland Books sold to Pratilipi?

The accounts use different shorthand for the 2022 transition. Scroll’s report on 1 April 2022 said Westland ceased to exist as an Amazon company on 31 March and had not been bought as a company. It described Pratilipi as establishing a new publishing venture. Moneycontrol later characterized Pratilipi’s move as acquiring Westland from Amazon and bringing its team and operations into the company in April 2022.

The most precise summary is that Pratilipi continued Westland’s publishing operation through a new venture, bringing over much of its team; the contemporary report did not describe a sale of the old company as a going concern. Scroll’s 2022 account and Moneycontrol’s later account describe the transition from those different angles.

What happened to Westland’s people, authors and books?

Much of the team continued

Scroll named former Westland CEO Gautam Padmanabhan and former publisher Karthika VK among the people joining or building the new venture, along with other former publishing staff. The report does not say every Westland employee moved to Pratilipi.

Rights and the backlist were not guaranteed to move

The 2022 report said continuation of imprints depended on negotiations and that authors could choose whether to work with the new venture. Some backlist books might not be republished there. The sources do not establish title-by-title ownership or licensing of Westland’s pre-2022 books, so a familiar imprint or old catalogue listing is not proof that all rights transferred unchanged.

Is Westland Books still publishing?

Yes. Pratilipi currently describes Westland as an English-language trade publisher of print books and e-books. Its stated subjects include popular and literary fiction, business, politics, biography, spirituality, popular science, health and self-help. Its named imprints include Context, Eka, Tranquebar, Westland Sport, Westland Business, Westland Non-Fiction and Red Panda. These are Pratilipi’s current descriptions of the business, not evidence that every former imprint or title survived the transition. Pratilipi’s company profile sets out that scope.

Westland’s official store says the operation is an extension of Westland Books and part of the Pratilipi family, and it lists physical book collections. That is evidence of a current catalogue, not a guarantee that a particular book is available through every bookseller. Westland’s store

What has Westland announced since the transition?

In August 2025, Westland and the India Comics Project, in partnership with the French Embassy in India, issued an open call for artists for a planned series of 24 English-language comics adapting classic Indian stories from different languages. The call described intended publication in 2026–27, an advance and royalties for selected artists, and an 8–12 month process working with Westland editors; it listed 19 September 2025 as the shortlist announcement date. The announcement establishes the plan and the call, not that all 24 books have since been selected or published, or the final contract terms for any individual artist. India Comics Project’s call

How does Westland fit into Pratilipi?

Pratilipi began as a writing and reading platform; Westland is its curated trade-publishing operation for print and e-books. The distinction is between a platform where writers publish and readers discover work, and a publisher selecting and producing books for a catalogue. Pratilipi’s company letter dated 30 September 2026 describes possible paths for stories across translation, audiobooks, comics, physical books, film, television and micro-drama. Team Pratilipi presented these as an ecosystem vision, not a promise that every story will be adapted.

In the same letter, Pratilipi said authors earned ₹38.2 crore in the 12 months before 30 September 2026, compared with company-reported figures of ₹24.9 crore for 2025 and ₹14.8 crore for 2024. It also reported 10,104 authors earning by August 2026, 90 earning over ₹1 lakh in some months in 2026, and 55 earning over ₹1 lakh in August. These are company claims, not independently audited figures in the cited material, and they describe Pratilipi’s wider author ecosystem rather than Westland book royalties.
