Western Global Airlines furloughed its MD-11 pilots effective November 22, 2025, after a federal grounding of MD-11 and MD-11F aircraft stretched into an uncertain inspection and repair period. The company’s stated concern was that the prolonged disruption threatened its survival. Since then, at least one of its aircraft has returned to service: Air Data News reported that MD-11F N781SN resumed operations on May 23, 2026. Available reporting does not establish the status of the entire fleet or whether furloughed pilots were recalled.
Why did Western Global furlough its pilots?
The immediate cause was the extended grounding of the airline’s MD-11 fleet. FreightWaves reported that an internal letter from Tom Romnios, Western Global’s vice president of human resources, said Boeing had advised that more extensive inspections, repairs, and parts replacements would be required, with the grounding period undetermined. The furloughs took effect November 22, 2025, and were described as indefinite.
In the letter, Romnios said the situation was not caused by the company and that workforce reductions were necessary to try to preserve the airline until MD-11s could return. That explanation is based on the company letter as reported by FreightWaves, not on a published tally of affected pilots.
Why were MD-11 aircraft grounded?
The FAA acted after UPS Flight 2976 crashed during takeoff at Louisville on November 4, 2025. On November 8, the agency issued an emergency Airworthiness Directive prohibiting operators from flying MD-11 and MD-11F aircraft until they completed specified inspections and any necessary corrective actions. The FAA said the directive covered approximately 109 U.S.-registered aircraft.

The directive made inspection and corrective work a condition for flight; it did not establish a single return date for every aircraft or operator. Boeing’s corrective plan was later approved by the FAA after review. The Associated Press reported that the plan included replacing a key spherical bearing and increasing inspections. Approval of the plan did not itself confirm that every aircraft had completed its required work.

Are Western Global’s MD-11s flying again?
One return is confirmed in the available reporting: Air Data News reported that Western Global MD-11F N781SN returned to service on May 23, 2026, the first aircraft from the carrier’s grounded fleet to resume operations. That does not show how many other Western Global MD-11Fs had returned by October 8, 2026, or whether all required work was complete.

The same limitation applies to the workforce. The available sources do not confirm whether Western Global recalled any pilots affected by the furloughs. FAA approval of Boeing’s plan, and the return of an aircraft, should not be treated as evidence of a pilot recall.
How did the disruption affect Western Global pilots?
The furlough report did not provide a confirmed count of affected pilots. The Air Line Pilots Association says Western Global’s pilot group had grown to 147 following restructuring and that it provided legal guidance and career assistance to members affected by the disruption. That figure describes the pilot group, not the number furloughed.
