The West Brom takeover is complete, not pending. Bilkul Football WBA, LLC acquired control of West Bromwich Albion Group Limited, the parent company of the football club, on 28 February 2024. The club’s current ownership page, accessed in 2026, still shows Bilkul holding 93.9% of that Group. The sources reviewed for this update show no later sale and no named replacement owner.
Who owns West Brom now
West Bromwich Albion Football Club Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of West Bromwich Albion Group Limited. The club’s ownership page places Bilkul Football WBA, LLC at 93.9% of the Group’s issued share capital. Shilen Patel and his father, Dr Kiran C. Patel, each hold an indirect significant interest in Bilkul, which is the vehicle through which the Patel family controls the club.
The statutory record tells the same structural story from a different angle. Companies House’s persons-with-significant-control register for West Bromwich Albion Football Club Limited lists the Group as the active controller. The Group is recorded as holding at least 75% of shares and voting rights, and as having the right to appoint or remove directors. Companies House does not check the accuracy of information filed with it, so treat the register as the filed control record and read it alongside the club’s own disclosure.
Why you will see two different percentages
Two figures appear in official material, and they come from different dates. The completion announcement of 28 February 2024 said Bilkul had acquired an 87.8% shareholding in the Group. The current ownership page reports 93.9%. The sources reviewed do not explain what changed between those two points, so the honest reading is simply that the club’s most recent disclosure shows a higher Bilkul stake than the figure announced at completion. Quote each number with its date. Do not treat the gap as proof of a dispute, a second transaction, or anything else the records do not state.

What happened on 28 February 2024
On 28 February 2024 the club announced that Bilkul had completed its acquisition after receiving approval from the English Football League (EFL). Bilkul is ultimately owned by Shilen Patel, a Florida-based entrepreneur, and his father. Shilen Patel was named club chairman. In the completion statement he said: “I am delighted and humbled to become the new custodian of West Bromwich Albion Football Club.” The same date is recorded in Companies House as the day Guochuan Lai ceased to be a person with significant control of the club.
What a future ownership change would have to pass
Nothing in the reviewed sources indicates that a sale is under way. The rules below explain what any future change of control would involve, which is useful context when a reader sees speculation about a buyer.

- Independent Football Regulator regime. The EFL’s current guidance says its test operates alongside the Independent Football Regulator’s Owners, Directors and Senior Executives regime, which began on 5 May 2026. Clearance is issued only once the relevant requirements of both bodies have been met.
- Control thresholds. For EFL purposes, a shareholding of 25% or more is automatically treated as control. Control can also arise through board appointment rights or other influence, even below that level.
The 2025 accounts and the 2014 loan
The Group’s accounts for the year ended 30 June 2025 report a loss before tax of £18.8m. The same accounts say Bilkul assumed full responsibility for repaying a historical 2014 loan, including accumulated interest, and that the repayment date was varied to 12 September 2026. That date has now passed. The sources reviewed do not confirm whether the loan was repaid by then.
A reported loss and a loan with a revised repayment date are financial facts about the club’s position in its 2025 reporting period. They are not evidence of insolvency, a forced sale, or a new takeover, and this article does not treat them as any of those.
