Yes. Southwest advertised one-way fares starting at $53 for its 53rd-birthday sale, but the offer was a short 2024 promotion—not a standing fare. Bookings had to be made by June 20, 2024, and all eligible travel dates have passed, so you can no longer book those birthday fares.
What were Southwest’s $53 birthday flights?
Southwest announced the promotion on June 18, 2024, describing fares as low as $53 one-way. The advertised figure was a starting fare, not a price available on every route, flight, or date. Southwest’s official announcement and full terms are available in its June 18, 2024 release.

The offer was for one-way Wanna Get Away fares. Displayed cash fares included government taxes and fees; points bookings did not include at least $5.60 in one-way taxes and fees. Seats, routes, and eligible days were limited, and actual fares varied by destination, flight, and weekday.
When could customers book and travel?
The booking window ran from 12:01 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time on June 18 through 11:59 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time on June 20, 2024. The travel periods were also limited to 2024:

Which routes did Southwest list?
The announcement gave these examples of nonstop one-way routes with fares starting at $53:

These were examples, not a guarantee that a $53 seat was available on every flight or date on those routes. The fare terms applied to eligible itineraries subject to limited inventory and the sale’s route, weekday, and blackout restrictions.
What happened if a traveler changed or canceled?
An itinerary change could result in a higher fare. The promotional fares were nonrefundable, but a canceled reservation could be applied toward future Southwest travel if canceled at least 10 minutes before departure. If a traveler did not cancel by that cutoff, remaining funds were forfeited.

Was this the same as Southwest’s Wanna Get Away Week sale?
No. Southwest announced a different Wanna Get Away Week promotion on June 10, 2024. That earlier sale advertised up to 50% off base fares and had its own booking period, travel dates, and blackout rules. It was separate from the birthday sale announced on June 18, and its terms do not extend or change the expired $53 offer. Southwest’s June 10, 2024 announcement describes the earlier promotion.
