Affirm said information it shared with Evolve Bank & Trust for Affirm Card issuance and servicing may have been compromised in Evolve’s 2024 cybersecurity incident. Affirm said its own systems were not compromised and cardholders could continue using their cards. The public disclosures do not identify which individual Affirm Cardholders were affected or what information about any one person was exposed.
Why Affirm Cardholders were connected to the breach
Evolve Bank & Trust was the third-party issuer of the Affirm Card. In a Form 8-K filed July 1, 2024, Affirm said Evolve notified it on June 25 that Evolve had experienced unauthorized access involving personal and financial information belonging to Evolve retail banking customers and customers of its financial technology partners. Because Affirm shared cardholder information with Evolve to support card issuance and servicing, Affirm said cardholder information may have been compromised. Affirm’s SEC filing
Affirm said the incident did not compromise its own information systems, prevent use of Affirm Cards, or affect other parts of its business or operations. At the time of the filing, however, Affirm said it did not yet know the full scope of unauthorized access to Affirm Card user information. It said it notified law enforcement and all Affirm Card users and increased fraud monitoring.
What Evolve later disclosed about the incident
Evolve described the event as a LockBit ransomware attack. The bank said attackers appeared to gain access after an employee clicked a malicious internet link, and that it had evidence files were downloaded from databases and a file share during periods in February and May 2024. Evolve said it saw no new unauthorized activity after May 31, 2024, refused the ransom, and the threat actor leaked downloaded data. These are Evolve’s statements about the incident. Those categories describe Evolve’s wider customer and partner population; they are not a confirmed field-by-field list for Affirm Cardholders. The public disclosures do not establish the final number of affected Affirm Cardholders or what specific information, if any, was exposed for a particular person. The only reliable way to know what an individual notice identifies is to review that notice.
