After FBI and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) agents searched Future Electronics’ Pointe-Claire, Quebec, facility on May 7, 1999, the distributor said it remained operational worldwide and was trying to conduct business as usual. At the time, authorities had not publicly explained the search. Later reports described allegations about pricing practices; Future denied wrongdoing. The U.S. Justice Department closed its investigation in 2002 without charges, according to EDN—not through a trial or court ruling.
What happened after the FBI raided Future Electronics?
The search took place at Future Electronics’ headquarters in Pointe-Claire on May 7, 1999. The FBI’s Dallas office initiated it, the RCMP confirmed, and Quebec Superior Court had authorized the warrant, according to EE Times. Authorities did not say publicly what they were seeking.
Future said the authorities completed their work and left, and that the company remained operational worldwide. An eyewitness told EE Times that employees were asked to leave after access to computers and telephones was restricted; the reported evacuation lasted about 20 minutes. That account was an eyewitness description, not an official estimate.
EE Times reported that Future had 5,300 employees, according to the company, and that EBN estimated the distributor’s North American sales at approximately $1.8 billion in 1998. The sales figure was an industry estimate, not audited company data.

Was Future Electronics able to keep operating after the raid?
Yes. In the week after the search, Future contacted suppliers and customers to say it was fully operational and intended to continue business as usual. A company spokesman told EE Times, “Our bookings are doing fine, and to our knowledge not one customer was placed in jeopardy.”
Two suppliers quoted in the same report described service as continuing normally. Rich Begen, Analog Devices’ distribution director, said, “We’ve seen no discernible drop-off in service and we’re not anticipating any.” Clyde Brewer, Philips Semiconductors’ distribution sales director, said the companies had had a professional relationship and that “for now it’s business as usual.” These were supplier assessments, not an independent audit of all customer orders.

Why did the FBI investigate Future Electronics?
Immediately after the search, neither authorities nor Future publicly supplied the basis for it. Future chief executive and owner Robert Miller said the company had no prior knowledge and had not been given particulars. The FBI declined to explain the investigation, and affidavits setting out the basis for the search remained sealed, EE Times reported on May 14, 1999.
In a July 9 update, Future vice president of sales Robert Vaupshas said the inquiry concerned pricing practices, describing the issue as “a fundamental industry practice with respect to pricing.” An FBI spokeswoman would not confirm that characterization, saying, “We wouldn’t confirm that this is the direction the investigation is headed.” She said information provided to the bureau was confidential. EE Times reported that no arrests had been made and no charges filed as of that date. Its July report discussed Future’s Market Price Program, in which the company said it negotiated larger component purchases in advance, alongside industry practices known as ship-from-stock-and-debit and meet-comp.

- Full Soldering Kit: This soldering kit comes with a spool of solder wire, 5 extra soldering tips, tweezers, desoldering pump. The accessories included covers a wide range of soldering tasks, and you can get started with this hobby as soon as you get the WEP 926LED V3
- Compact: The WEP 926LED V3 soldering iron kit integrates the soldering iron holder directly onto the station's body. This is great for users who have limited desk space, but is still considering soldering as a hobby. Not only does our soldering station save space, the holder is also built with highly temperature-resistant material to ensure safe storage
- Advanced Temperature Control: The temperature can be adjusted from 392 to 896°F via the control knob on the soldering station, and the digital display reads-out the real-time temperature. Our built-in PID microcontroller calculates for temperature compensations rapidly, and keeps the soldering iron tip at the set temperature steady. This way, you can solder much more smoothly as compared to non-temperature stabilized soldering iron
- Useful Functions: Comes with sleep mode function for when you're not using the soldering iron for longer than 10 minutes, keeping the iron at low idling temperature to reduce wear and extend service lifespan. The soldering tips and heating element lasts longer thanks to this function. You can also toggle the temperature display unit from Fahrenheit to Celsius at will, a helpful function if you're learning from soldering tutorials in different regions
- This Soldering Iron Station Kit is covered by our exclusive 1-year USA technical support, with 24-hour assistance from our dedicated team. Note: This product is rated for 110-127V USA specifications. Do not connect this iron to a 220V power socket
A December 1999 Forbes account described allegations in an FBI affidavit that Future had misreported sales prices to obtain supplier rebates. It reported alleged supplier overbilling of about $100 million annually; that was an allegation Future disputed, not an established loss or finding. Future offered its own explanation of its purchasing approach and denied wrongdoing.
Forbes also reported that Texas Instruments and ON Semiconductor had stopped doing business with Future after the search, while both companies said their decisions were unrelated to the investigation. That later account differs from the May report, in which Texas Instruments said it had made no change in its dealings with Future. The accounts describe different points in time, not a single unchanged supplier position.

Was Future Electronics charged?
No. EE Times reported no charges as of July 1999, and EDN later reported that the FBI never filed charges against the company. The Justice Department’s decision to close the investigation was not a prosecution, a verdict, or a court’s determination of whether the allegations were true or false.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How did the investigation end?
On April 4, 2002, EDN reported that the U.S. Justice Department had closed the investigation and notified Future with a letter titled “Declination of Prosecution.” Future called the outcome vindication; that was the company’s interpretation. What the report establishes is that the investigation ended without charges being filed—not that a court ruled on the underlying allegations.
