Wells Fargo’s virtual assistant, Fargo, was estimated in January 2024 to be capable of handling close to 100 million or more interactions per year as the bank added conversations and capabilities. That was a forecast, not a verified annual result. In March 2026, Wells Fargo reported more than one billion cumulative interactions in less than three years—but that total does not show how many interactions occurred in any single year.
What is Wells Fargo’s Fargo assistant?
Fargo is Wells Fargo’s conversational assistant inside the Wells Fargo Mobile app. It is not a standalone Google consumer assistant. Customers can type or speak requests in the app, and Fargo interprets them to provide banking information or help with tasks. Wells Fargo describes the smartphone app as the place to use it. What can Fargo do?
Fargo’s documented tasks span routine account management and payments. Wells Fargo’s March 2026 update lists sending money with Zelle, paying bills, finding routing numbers, and getting spending and balance insights. At launch, the bank also described controls for turning debit cards on or off, checking credit limits, and searching transactions by date, amount, or type. The list reflects tasks described in those announcements; it should not be read as a guarantee that every request is available to every customer or account.
The October 2022 launch announcement said Fargo inquiries it could not answer would be handed off to a live agent. That is the documented escalation approach in the launch description, not a promise about response times or current handling for every unsupported request.

Is Fargo powered by Google?
Wells Fargo’s October 2022 launch announcement said Fargo was built on Google Cloud’s Dialogflow conversational AI platform, which would process language to understand customers’ intent and provide tailored responses. That establishes the platform named at launch; it does not establish that Fargo’s current underlying model stack is unchanged. The bank has described Fargo as conversational AI, but the cited newer milestone announcement does not specify a replacement or confirm the present architecture. How many interactions has Fargo handled?
The available figures refer to different measures and dates, so they should not be treated as interchangeable.

Mehta’s 2024 statement was explicitly conditional: he said Fargo could handle “close to 100 million or more [interactions] per year” as Wells Fargo added conversations and capabilities. VentureBeat reported the remark and the then-current 20 million cumulative figure in its January 2024 coverage.
In March 2026, Wells Fargo said Fargo had passed one billion cumulative interactions in less than three years. That later milestone shows substantial overall use, but it cannot be divided into a reliable annual rate from the information published. The company did not provide an annual series or independent audit methodology in that announcement. Wells Fargo’s March 2026 milestone release reports the cumulative totals.

Did Fargo reach 100 million interactions per year?
The cited figures do not verify that it did. The 100-million figure was a 2024 estimate of capability, while the one-billion figure announced in 2026 is cumulative across less than three years. Neither establishes Fargo’s total for a single year. The most accurate answer is that Wells Fargo later reported a billion-plus cumulative interactions, but a year-specific count confirming the earlier estimate is not available in these announcements.

Interactions count conversations or exchanges, not necessarily unique people, completed banking tasks, or successful resolutions. Wells Fargo’s reported totals indicate the scale of use it attributes to Fargo, but they do not by themselves measure customer satisfaction, accuracy, or the number of customers who relied on the assistant. A separate Wells Fargo-reported Ipsos survey from 2022 found that 65% of surveyed millennial and Gen Z respondents preferred a virtual assistant for customer service rather than waiting for a phone representative; that finding was about virtual assistants generally, not Fargo specifically. Wells Fargo also reported that 84% of respondents who had used virtual assistants had a favorable experience and 70% cited time savings as a leading benefit. The bank’s 2022 announcement describes those survey results.
