Wells Fargo dismissed more than a dozen employees in its wealth and investment management unit in May 2024 after reviewing allegations that they simulated keyboard activity to create the impression they were working. Public reports do not identify the tools used or say whether the employees were working from home or in an office.
What Wells Fargo’s disclosures said
Bloomberg News reported on June 13, 2024, that the employees were fired the previous month. The report cited filings with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), which described the employees as “discharged after review of allegations involving simulation of keyboard activity creating impression of active work.” Bloomberg reported that more than a dozen people were affected; the exact number was not established. Bloomberg News and Ars Technica both reported that the employees belonged to Wells Fargo’s wealth and investment management division.
The wording matters: it describes allegations that the company reviewed, not a public account of the underlying evidence or individual case findings. Ars Technica said it independently checked FINRA records and confirmed the division and disclosure language, but the public reporting does not detail what investigators found in each case.
What Wells Fargo said
A Wells Fargo spokesperson told Bloomberg: “Wells Fargo holds employees to the highest standards and does not tolerate unethical behavior.” CBS News also reported the same statement, describing it as an emailed response to CBS MoneyWatch. This is the company’s stated position; it does not add public details about the allegations or the evidence in individual cases.

Did employees use mouse jigglers, and were they working remotely?
Neither point has been established by the available reports. The disclosures do not identify a particular device, software, or technique, and they do not say whether the employees were working at home or in a Wells Fargo office. Ars Technica and The Guardian both note that the work setting is unspecified.
A mouse jiggler is a general product category, not a confirmed detail of this case. Some devices connect by USB and simulate mouse input; rotating platforms move a real mouse. Software can also simulate mouse activity, and physical devices can simulate keyboard presses. These are examples of methods described in coverage, not evidence that any was used by the Wells Fargo employees.

How the remote-work figures fit—and what they do not show
The Guardian, citing WFH Research, reported that just over a quarter of paid working days in the United States in May 2024 were work-from-home days. It gave 5% as the pre-COVID baseline, without specifying a more precise year for that comparison. Those figures describe the US workforce broadly; they are not Wells Fargo workforce statistics and do not establish where the dismissed employees worked.
