Nexstar’s September 17, 2025 decision to pull Jimmy Kimmel Live! from its ABC-affiliated stations “for the foreseeable future” did not last indefinitely: the company announced the show would return to those stations beginning September 26. That was Nexstar’s station decision; ABC separately suspended the program on September 17.
Why did Nexstar pull Jimmy Kimmel Live?
On September 17, 2025, Nexstar Media Group said its owned and partner ABC-affiliated stations would preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! starting that night and replace it with other programming in those markets. Nexstar said it objected to Kimmel’s comments about the killing of Charlie Kirk.

Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar’s broadcasting division, said the comments were “offensive and insensitive” and did not reflect the range of views in local communities served by the stations. He said Nexstar did not consider continuing to carry the show “in the public interest at the current time.” Those were Nexstar’s stated judgments and rationale, not independent findings. Nexstar’s September 17 announcement gives the company’s explanation.
How did Nexstar’s decision differ from ABC’s?
ABC separately suspended the show on September 17. The Associated Press reported that ABC’s announcement did not state a reason. Nexstar’s action was a decision by a group of ABC-affiliated stations, accompanied by a public explanation from the company; it was not the same announcement as ABC’s network suspension. The Associated Press’s September 17 report covered both developments.

The AP also reported that Kimmel had discussed reactions to Kirk’s killing in broadcasts on Monday and Tuesday, including saying that “many in MAGA land are working very hard to capitalize on the murder of Charlie Kirk.” The report said FCC Chairman Brendan Carr criticized the remarks and threatened further FCC action. These events provide contemporaneous context; the cited accounts do not establish that government pressure caused Nexstar to preempt the program.

Is Jimmy Kimmel Live still off ABC?
The September 2025 Nexstar preemption was reversed: Nexstar announced a return to its ABC-affiliated stations starting September 26, 2025. The announcements establish that historical sequence, not the present-day schedule of every local station. Check a local station’s current listings for its current schedule.
