When Novo Nordisk launched Wegovy in China in November 2024, the reported monthly price for its starter dose was 1,400 yuan—about $193 at the time—compared with a U.S. list price of $1,349 per month. That was a launch-era comparison, not a current like-for-like price quote: China’s prices later changed, and the available reporting does not establish a current nationwide schedule.
What the launch-era price comparison showed
Wegovy, Novo Nordisk’s prescription semaglutide injection for weight loss, received Chinese approval in June 2024 and launched there in November. Ars Technica reported the 1,400-yuan monthly starter-dose price, citing Yicai, and compared it with the then-cited U.S. list price of $1,349 per month. These figures differ in currency, market, dose context and price type. The Chinese figure was for the starter dose; the U.S. figure was a historical list-price comparator. Neither number establishes what a particular patient paid out of pocket, and the comparison should not be read as a current price gap.
How China prices changed after launch
In December 2025, Novo Nordisk confirmed it was adjusting Wegovy prices in China, but Reuters reported that the company did not disclose the new prices. The report cited local-media figures for two higher doses: monthly prices of 987 yuan and 1,284 yuan, described as cuts of 48% in some provinces. The later figures also refer to higher doses, so they should not be compared directly with the 2024 starter-dose price. Taken together, the reports establish that China pricing changed after launch, but do not show a current authoritative price for every dose nationwide.
What the U.S. price means now
The $1,349 monthly U.S. list price belongs to the November 2024 comparison; it is not a reliable statement of every patient’s present cost. Novo Nordisk announced a U.S. Wegovy list-price reduction to $675, effective January 1, 2027. As of October 8, 2026, that announced price has not yet taken effect. Why is Wegovy cheaper in China?
The available price reporting supports a time-specific comparison, but it does not establish why the prices differ. It would be speculation to attribute the gap to a particular policy, negotiation, production cost or business strategy based on these figures alone.
