Those results apply to the surveyed stores and baskets—not every item, sale, online order or U.S. market. Whole Foods may appeal to shoppers who prioritize its published product standards and prepared foods; the better fit depends on your local prices, shopping priorities and ordering costs.
Is Wegmans cheaper than Whole Foods?
In each of three regional Consumers’ Checkbook comparisons updated in November 2025, the surveyed Wegmans basket cost less than the Whole Foods basket. The size of the difference was not consistent across regions:

These are local basket comparisons, not national averages or proof that every comparable product costs less at Wegmans. The studies cover separate regions and do not establish a common national matched basket. Individual prices can differ by store, package size, promotion, department and availability.
How to compare your own grocery bill
Use the basket studies as a signal to check your local stores, rather than as a prediction of your total. Make a list of items you buy repeatedly and compare the same brand, product type and unit size at nearby locations. Include the categories that matter to your household—such as organic produce, meat, store brands, prepared foods and specialty-diet items—and account for promotions and online price differences.

Which store has better produce, meat and product standards?
Consumers’ Checkbook describes Whole Foods as known for produce, meat, prepared foods and generic staples. Its Boston and Delaware Valley reporting says Whole Foods continued to receive high marks in consumer surveys for produce and meat quality. These survey findings speak to customer ratings in those markets; they do not establish that every location or product will suit every shopper.
Wegmans also received strong ratings in the Washington-area Consumers’ Checkbook survey: 87% of Wegmans customers rated the chain’s overall quality “superior,” and 85% rated its produce “superior.” Those are results from that particular 2025 regional survey, not a national poll. What Whole Foods says its standards cover
Whole Foods Market says its product standards prohibit high-fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners and hydrogenated fats in foods it sells, along with more than 100 preservatives, flavors, colors and other ingredients. The company also says its seafood selection is limited to sustainable wild-caught and Responsibly Farmed items, that it does not sell “red-rated” seafood, and that antibiotics are prohibited in raising animals for products in its meat department. Whole Foods identifies milk, cheese, butter and yogurt under its 365 Everyday Value brand as dairy products made with milk from animals not given synthetic growth hormones. The available comparisons do not provide a current, matched count of products or brands at the two chains. There is not enough evidence to say one categorically has more selection. Check the nearby stores for the products you actually buy: national brands, store brands, organic options, specialty ingredients, prepared meals and foods that meet your dietary requirements. Wegmans pickup and delivery
Wegmans offers online grocery pickup and delivery through its website or app, with orders fulfilled through its Instacart partnership. Wegmans says online prices are about 15% higher than in-store prices, including the cost of shopping the order. The available information does not establish current Whole Foods delivery fees or a matched online-cart comparison between the chains. Compare the final checkout total for your address—including item prices, fees and tip—rather than assuming the in-store basket gap also applies to delivery.
