Omaha-area leaders urged people to support Lexington residents after Tyson Foods announced the closure of its Lexington plant. In a Dec. 16, 2025, report, the Nebraska Examiner said donations were being directed to the Lexington Community Foundation. State employment and training services followed, with later program details published in March 2026.
What Omaha advocates asked people to do
The appeal was for community support, not a product or investment. Douglas County Board chair Roger Garcia said, “We will not be forgetting nor letting our brothers and sisters in a smaller community in Nebraska go through this alone.” The Examiner’s Dec. 16, 2025, story directed would-be donors to the Lexington Community Foundation.

That reporting establishes where donations were directed at the time; it does not establish whether the foundation is currently accepting donations, how funds were distributed, or what they ultimately paid for. Check with the foundation directly before giving.
How large was the potential job loss?
The Associated Press reported that 3,200 Tyson employees faced job loss. It also cited a University of Nebraska–Lincoln estimate of 7,000 total job losses, largely in Lexington and surrounding counties. The first figure concerns Tyson’s workforce; the second is a broader estimate, not a count of Tyson employees. Associated Press coverage

December 2025 response events
In a Dec. 18, 2025, update, Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen’s office said more than 1,600 people attended Rapid Response events and job fairs over two weeks, and nearly 600 registered on NEworks, the state’s employment system. Those are attendance and registration figures, not confirmed job placements. The update also announced a hotline with language assistance at 308-407-1517; contact information and service status can change, so consult the state’s current Lexington resources page before relying on it. Services described in March 2026
On March 24, 2026, the Nebraska Department of Labor said it had received a $1.67 million federal Dislocated Worker Grant to support workers affected by the closure. The department described individualized career services, job-search assistance, placement support, assessments for basic skills and English-language needs, and training. Its release named CNA, medication aide, medical coding, commercial driving, and construction as initial training areas and said the Lexington Job Center administered services. It also listed more than 178 eligible regional training programs; eligibility and availability should be confirmed with the department. Nebraska Department of Labor, March 24, 2026
