The Associated Press reported the next day that a U.S. official said the government had not identified an actor. Protests involving DOGE and Tesla were part of the same news cycle; the reporting reviewed here does not show they caused the outage.
What happened to X on March 10?
Users reported multiple disruptions to X on March 10, 2025. Musk, the platform’s owner, called the event a “massive cyberattack.” As the Associated Press reported, he wrote: “We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources,” he claimed. The wording matters: this was Musk’s account of the incident, not an independently established finding about its cause.

Reports from outage-tracking services can document that users are having trouble accessing a service, but they do not by themselves establish that an attack occurred or identify how many people were affected. The reviewed reporting does not provide a verified count of victims.

The contemporaneous reporting supports a distinction between the disruption itself and its explanation. The Associated Press reported Musk’s claim of a cyberattack, but on March 11 it also reported that a U.S. official said the government had not determined who was behind the apparent attack and had no specific intelligence identifying an actor. That leaves the public attribution unresolved in the reporting available here; it does not establish that a particular person, group, country, or motive was responsible.

Security researcher Kevin Beaumont offered a technical interpretation, as reported by AP: he said the IP addresses were worldwide rather than confined to Ukraine and referred to a Mirai variant botnet. This is an attributed assessment about the apparent attack’s technical indicators, not a public identification of who operated it. IP geography, a possible botnet, an outage, and an attacker’s identity or motive are separate questions.
Did DOGE or Tesla protests cause the outage?
No causal link is established in the reporting reviewed here. Coverage placed the X outage amid protests against DOGE and demonstrations or vandalism involving Tesla sites. That establishes political context and timing, not that protesters caused the disruption, that the outage was retaliation, or that Musk was personally targeted.

To assess a claim connecting these events, look for evidence that identifies a mechanism or actor and links that evidence to the outage—not merely for events occurring around the same time. The reports cited here do not provide that link.

What the reporting establishes—and what it does not
- Established: Users reported repeated X disruptions on March 10, 2025.
- Attributed claim: Musk called the disruption a “massive cyberattack.”
- Contemporaneous attribution caveat: AP reported on March 11 that a U.S. official said the government had not identified the actor and lacked specific intelligence on who was responsible.
- Attributed technical interpretation: Beaumont, as reported by AP, described worldwide IP addresses and a Mirai variant botnet.
- Not established: The identity or motive of an operator, or a causal connection between the outage and protests involving DOGE or Tesla.
The reporting is contemporaneous and addresses the situation as of March 11, 2025. It does not establish whether a later investigation identified an actor or published technical findings, so it cannot support a claim about the present-day status of attribution.
