The “cash boost coming to millions of Aussies in just weeks” was a package of Australian payment changes scheduled for 20 September 2024—not a new or universal bonus. It combined routine payment indexation, a rise in maximum Commonwealth Rent Assistance and an expansion of eligibility for the higher JobSeeker rate. The date has passed; check Services Australia for current rates and your individual entitlement.
What the 2024 headline meant
PerthNow reported that some payment recipients could receive increases following changes due on 20 September 2024. Its article cited increases of “up to $41.50 a fortnight” from indexation and an extra “$71.20 per fortnight” for some JobSeeker recipients. Those are figures reported by PerthNow in the 2024 context, not current rates or amounts every recipient was guaranteed. The official Services Australia fact sheets establish the measures and who they targeted, but do not independently confirm those exact amounts. PerthNow’s report.
Which changes were scheduled for September 2024?
Regular payment indexation
Some social security rates are adjusted on scheduled dates. This recurring indexation is distinct from a new policy or one-off payment. Services Australia says Rent Assistance rates are updated on 20 March and 20 September each year. Services Australia: How much Rent Assistance you can get.
Higher maximum Commonwealth Rent Assistance
In its 2024–25 Budget fact sheet, Services Australia described a 10% increase to maximum Commonwealth Rent Assistance rates, with regular indexation on top. The fact sheet was accurate as of 14 May 2024 and said the measure was subject to legislation passing. It described a change to the maximum rates—not a flat 10% increase in every recipient’s payment. Expanded eligibility for the higher JobSeeker rate
The same budget package proposed extending the higher JobSeeker rate to single recipients assessed as having partial capacity to work up to 14 hours a week. The fact sheet set a 20 September 2024 start date and noted that the measure depended on legislation passing at the time. Does this mean your payment will go up?
Not necessarily by the amounts in the headline. Whether a person’s payment changes—and by how much—depends on the payment they receive and their circumstances. Rent Assistance is not automatic for everyone who pays rent: eligibility and the amount depend on factors including the eligible payment received and rent paid. For an individual estimate, use Services Australia’s current guidance rather than a 2024 news report.

- Open the relevant Services Australia page for your payment: Rent Assistance or JobSeeker Payment.
- Read the current eligibility and rate information, including any conditions that apply to your circumstances.
- Use your myGov-linked Centrelink account or contact Services Australia if you need to confirm how a change applies to your payment.
Services Australia’s current JobSeeker guidance lists maximum rates from 20 September 2026 and says rates are updated on 20 March and 20 September. Its live pages—not the historical budget fact sheets—are the appropriate place to check present-day amounts. JobSeeker Payment.
